Wi-Fi Health Risk to Children also Mobiles

Wi-Fi is a health risk to Children, medical experts say.
Wi-Fi is a health risk to Children, medical experts say.

Children should not place computers on their laps while they are using wireless internet connections because of potential health risks, according to a leading Government adviser.

Professor Lawrie Challis who is currently heading a committee on mobile phone safety research, Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme, an £8.4 million investigation funded by the UK Government. He said that young students should be monitored amid mounting public concern over emissions from Wi-Fi Networks. He said only limited studies have been done how harmful these emissions will be on humans and most importantly on children who will be more vulnerable to these emissions.

Prof Challis warned that until a study is done to rule out any harmful effects of Wi-Fi radiation, children should use laptops only if the embedded antenna is at a safe distance from them.

In the desktop computer, the transmitter is set at a safe distance from the user; the exposure will be similar to one percent of the radiation one receives from mobile phones. In the Laptop on the other hand the transmitter is very close to the user and the radiation received is similar to the exposure of a mobile phone.

Children are very sensitive and don’t have enough strength in their body to cope up with these dangers, so they should be protected. Children are advised to stop using the mobile phones for the same reason; otherwise they will be exposed to more harmful radiation.

In UK, they are currently working on it to control this exposure in their Wi-Fi networks established in schools.

In Britain, one in five adults own a wireless enabled laptop and half of all primary schools and 80 percent of secondary schools have wireless networks.

Wi-Fi works through the transmission of radio waves between a router, which is connected to a telephone line, and a small transmitter in a computer. Under international guidelines the amount of energy absorbed into the body from such radio waves cannot exceed two watts per kilogram when averaged over any 10 grams of tissue.

There is maximum signal strength right next to the router or transmitter around 0.1 watts and this strength drops off rapidly with incremental distances from the transmission point.

Alasdair Philips, the director of Powerwatch, the consumer group said that our brains and nervous systems work by using electrical signals. He believes these signals may be interfered with frequent exposure to this Wi-Fi Radiation. He said:

Based on studies reporting effects experienced by people living near mobile phone masts, I would predict chronic fatigue, memory and concentration problems, irritability and behaviour problems - exactly what we are seeing increasingly in our school pupils.

I think one has to be careful in use of both mobile and laptops, unless studies prove that it doesn’t cause any damage. Till then children should be advised to use less mobile phones instead of frequent calls they can send text messages and instead of laptops they can be asked to use desktops mostly.

Addiction Treatment Services from Narconon Stone Hawk

A drug habit is hard to tackle by oneself; it is better take medical care as soon as possible under professional care to remove the toxins from the system in a safe manner. Under these conditions a drug rehabilitation center is a must for a patient addicted to drugs. One such rehabilitation center is the Stone Hawk Rehabilitation Center. It is located in south central Michigan, which is very close to Detroit and Chicago. Stone Hawk Rehabilitation facility is spread over 13.5 acres with over 350 feet of water frontage on Private St. Mary's Lake. It is set under a natural setting surrounded by rolling hills and trees. Living under nature offers a much better cure than in a city environment, so this rehabilitation center would be a great place for addiction recovery.

The Stone Hawk drug rehab center also has a good living community nearby, so the patients can interact with them rather than living isolated. It was found by the famed Kellogg’s. Dr. Kellogg believed deeply in saunas to heal the body and the benefits of holistic medicine - nutrition was a priority in keeping the body healthy and with his brother, developed Kellogg cereals. Today Kellogg is known not just in Michigan, but worldwide and the traditions carry on.

Drug rehab, drug addiction rehabilitation treatment program centerThe Stone Hawk drug rehabilitation center offers a high success rate about 76% and is considered one of the most successful inpatient drug rehab center in the country.

Unlike other rehabilitation center which follows a strict regimen of rules, Stone Hawk center allows the patients to set their own morals and codes to live by during the treatment program. They mainly use the New Life Detoxification Program for drug detox (Saunas) to sweat the drugs (toxins) out of the body. And offer guidance after show the patients the right path. The name Stone Hawk represents Native American traditions and beliefs. The "stone" symbolizes the tribal clan the individual belongs to (turtle clan, deer clan, bear clan, etc.). The stone is solid. We chose it because to us, it symbolizes the choice to join a new "clan" to belong to-- the "drug-free" clan. The Stone Hawk Clan. The "hawk" is symbolic of healing, vision, rebirth and spirituality. The feathers of the hawk are used in healing rituals and ceremonies among tribes.

Check the link for more information, or they have toll free number, e-mail facility to reach the drug rehab center for additional information. You can also do a research at Google for the Stone Hawk Drug Rehab centre for more details and analysis.

PKWare releases free version of SecureZIP

The image “http://www.securezip.com/images/secure_box.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

PKWare on Monday released a free version of SecureZIP, encryption software designed for use on PCs, portable devices and laptops. SecureZIP Standard Version 11 aims to secure the body of e-mails, e-mail attachments and information stored on hard drives. It will work with Microsoft Outlook, doesn't have the details about Mozilla Thunderbird's compatibility with this software. This will be a great tool to send encrypted e-mails to personal and business contacts. It says it will provide file encryption, so even if intercepted, will not be able to access the file without the password or phrase.

I tested the software, it works like a charm. After you download the program, one can add files to be encrypted, it saves the encrypted file in a .zip folder with a Password or Pass phrase. The password has to be minimum 8 characters. Now you can attach this protected ZIP file and send it as e-mail attachment. The receiver will be able to see this attachment only when they enter the correct Pass phrase.

It is available in free and enterprise version. The Enterprise version is sold for $49.95.

This SecureZip program will be very useful to send confidential information to your business clients.

Firefox and Top 5 Firefox Extensions

http://www.cnet.com.au/i/g/339271869/sc001.jpg
I love Firefox because it is easy to use and the extensions are easy to add, no software background or programming is necessary. Even if you are new, you can download Firefox add these extensions, you will see a big difference from other browsers. First you download and click the following one at a time, it will automatically install in your Firefox.

Here are the Five I use frequently:

  • Roboform for Password: This is a great Password Random Generator and Password filler in websites. Now every website requires a user name and password, you can't have the same one otherwise it will become easy to steal the passwords. This Roboform does an excellent job. You can enter up to 25 passwords free after that you have to pay. I have been using them for 4 years now, without any problems, and I have so many updates from them with no additional charges, unlike Microsoft. This is safe and works fine in Firefox.
  • Book Burro: If you buy books a lot online, this feature you would love it. Suppose you go to Amazon and find the book you like, with this Book Burro extension it gives a good price comparison from various sites, so you can get the best price deal for any book.
  • Del.icio.us: This is similar to bookmarks you use in Firefox or IE, but this Del.icio.us adds one more great feature, tags, to the sites you book mark, and it is all available in the browser side bar. So you can find and go to the site quickly. For example, in normal bookmarks you will have 100s of them, and you will have folders, but later if you try to find the specific bookmark (e.g. Cheesecake recipe) it will be very difficult to find. Tagging in Del.icio.us (e.g, cooking, Cheesecake, recipe) makes it easy and finds it quickly.
  • FoxClocks: Lets you find time of various places in one click. I use it quite a bit to communicate with clients overseas.

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/images/addon_preview/1117/1

  • Google Toolbar for Firefox: This is one of the best extension, it has 100s of features, it needs a separate article, you would love it. You can search the web, patents, blogs, shops, with different options. Check Google Maps, go to Gmail, translate pages to English, French, Spanish, German and other languages, check weather and hundreds more uses for you.

http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT3/intl/en/fftoolbarnew.gif

All these extensions are easy to download, just click the links and click download, it will automatically update the Firefox. And you have to restart to make these functions work.

I used to have a plenty of extensions but because the Firefox browser crashes with more extensions, I use only about 10 now.

If you have other best extensions you like and you want to share with others, please leave a comment, if possible with links for others to go check it out.

Show off your pictures with Google Photos Screensaver

Google adds Google Screensaver a must add in program for your computer, shows pictures from the web, computer, web albums and photo feeds.

Google Screensaver is a Windows screen saver that displays photos from different locations. Instead of just a blank screen or just one picture behind the screen saver, you can have many pictures as a slide show that changes every few seconds and acts as a screen saver after a certain time limit set by you on your computer. This Google Screensaver comes as a part of Google Pack software containing Antivirus, Spyware, Google Desktop, Picasa and many other utilities, but if you just want to download Googlescreen saver click here or directly from here .

You can use pictures for your screensaver, from the following sources:

* Your computer. You select a list of folders that contain photos and Google Screensaver monitors the JPEGs from these folders.

* Picasa Web Albums. If you use Google's photo sharing site, you can view pictures from the most recently modified albums and from your contacts. It's probably the most interesting feature of Picasa Web Albums: you can monitor all the photos uploaded to your contacts' albums.

* Web feeds. You can find them in photo sharing sites like Flickr, Picasa Web Albums or at this page. Some nice feeds: Flickr (Vista wallpapers, nature, architecture, landscape, Google food), Yahoo search (autumn, Dali, sunset) . To add a new source, right-click a link to a feed in IE and Firefox and select "Add to Google Photos Screensaver".

The title and the author of the photo appears at the bottom of the picture and if you like some pictures you can go to the source by clicking one of the links from the bottom of the window.

The screen saver acts like a slide show so you can move to the next/previous photo using the mouse. The title and the author of a photo is always visible and you can go to the source of the photo by clicking to one of the links from the bottom of the window.

You can configure the visual effects (collage, wipe, pan and zoom, cross fade) and how often the photos change.

A typical picture in the screen saver shows as follows:

To open this screen saver, click Control Panel --> Appearance and Themes --> Display --> Screensaver --> Google Screensaver, there you can change the settings (change the photo feed or visual effects) and add any of the above feeds besides the Google feed of pictures.

Once you run this program you would love this, incredible pictures from various sources. Change your screen saver, this Google Screensaver is a much better option for your computer. You would love it.

Top 10 Myths About Islam

Islam is a widely-misundertood religion. Those who are unfamiliar with the faith often have misunderstandings about its teachings and practices. Common misconceptions include that Muslims worship a moon-god, that Islam is oppressive against women, or that Islam is a faith that promotes violence. Here we bust these myths and expose the true teachings of Islam.

1) Muslims worship a moon-god

Some non-Muslims mistakenly believe that Allah is an "Arab god," a "moon god," or some sort of idol. Allah is the proper name of the One True God, in the Arabic language. The most fundamental belief that a Muslim has is that "There is only One God," the Creator, the Sustainer -- known in the Arabic language and by Muslims as Allah. Arabic-speaking Christians use the same word for the Almighty.

2) Muslims don't believe in Jesus

In the Qur'an, stories about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ (called 'Isa in Arabic) are abundant. The Qur'an recalls his miraculous birth, his teachings, and the miracles he performed by God's permission. There is even a chapter of the Qur'an named after his mother, Mary (Miriam in Arabic). However, Muslims believe that Jesus was a fully human prophet and not in any way divine himself.

3) Most Muslims are Arabs

While Islam is often associated with Arabs, they make up only 15% of the world's Muslim population. The country with the largest population of Muslims is Indonesia. Muslims make up 1/5 of the world's population, with large numbers found in Asia (69%), Africa (27%), Europe (3%) and other parts of the world.

4) Islam oppresses women

Most of the ill-treatment that women receive in the Muslim world is based on local culture and traditions, without any basis in the faith of Islam. In fact, practices such as forced marriage, spousal abuse, and restricted movement directly contradict Islamic law governing family behavior and personal freedom.

5) Muslims are violent, terrorist extremists

Terrorism cannot be justified under any valid interpretation of the Islamic faith. The entire Qur'an, taken as a complete text, gives a message of hope, faith, and peace to a faith community of one billion people. The overwhelming message is that peace is to be found through faith in God, and justice among fellow human beings. Muslim leaders and scholars do speak out against terrorism in all its forms, and offer explanations of misinterpreted or twisted teachings.

6) Islam is intolerant of other faiths

Throughout the Qur'an, Muslims are reminded that they are not the only ones who worship God. Jews and Christians are called "People of the Book," meaning people who have received previous revelations from the One Almighty God that we all worship. The Qur'an also commands Muslims to protect from harm not only mosques, but also monasteries, synagogues, and churches -- because "God is worshipped therein."

7) Islam promotes "jihad" to spread Islam by the sword and kill all unbelievers

The word Jihad stems from an Arabic word which means "to strive." Other related words include "effort," "labor," and "fatigue." Essentially Jihad is an effort to practice religion in the face of oppression and persecution. The effort may come in fighting the evil in your own heart, or in standing up to a dictator. Military effort is included as an option, but as a last resort and not "to spread Islam by the sword."

8) The Quran was written by Muhammad and copied from Christian and Jewish sources

The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of two decades, calling people to worship One Almighty God and to live their lives according to this faith. The Qur'an contains stories of Biblical prophets, because these prophets also preached the message of God. Stories are not merely copied, but the oral traditions are referred to in a way that focuses on the examples and teachings that we can learn from them.

9) Islamic prayer is just a ritualized performance with no heartfelt meaning

Prayer is a time to stand before God and express faith, give thanks for blessings, and seek guidance and forgiveness. During Islamic prayer, one is modest, submissive and respectful to God. By bowing and prostrating ourselves to the ground, we express our utmost humility before the Almighty.

10) The crescent moon is a universal symbol of Islam

The early Muslim community did not really have a symbol. During the time of the Prophet Muhammad, Islamic caravans and armies flew simple solid-colored flags (generally black, green, or white) for identification purposes. The crescent moon and star symbol actually pre-dates Islam by several thousand years, and wasn't affiliated with Islam at all until the Ottoman Empire placed it on their flag.

Combine maps and spreadsheets with Google's new mashup tool | Webware : Cool Web apps for everyone

Combine maps and spreadsheets with Google's new mashup tool | Webware : Cool Web apps for everyone

Have you ever wanted to create your own Google map? Maybe a top ten list, or some of your favorite eateries. There are ways to do this with Ning and Yelp, but what if you really wanted to make changes later down the road and have those updates pushed out to anyone viewing your map immediately? Google has put together an experimental wizard for creating your own Google Maps mashup using data from Google Spreadsheets. The tool uses APIs from both Google Maps and Google Spreadsheets, but you won't have to know a lick of code, or anything super technical to use it.

Making your own test map with the tool is easy. Just start a new Google Spreadsheet, enter names, addresses, and descriptions. The only tough part is grabbing the latitude and longitude, which you can crab just by clicking the 'link to this page' button on the top right of a mapped location in Google Maps. In your browser's address bar you'll see a ton of letters and numbers, you just want the two numbers that come after the zip code. Paste each one into the longitude and latitude cells on your spreadsheet and you're done with the hard part. From there just follow the instructions on the wizard, grabbing the spreadsheet ID and picking how big you want your map to be. When you're done, you'll have a custom Google map that will update whenever you make changes and re-publish your Google Spreadsheet. Neat.

Our test mashup, which took about 10 minutes to create
(Credit: CNET Networks)

For now the wizard is limited to using a pre-determined spreadsheet format setup for restaurants, but man is it cool to pull in data from your spreadsheet instead of filling out a form. This also opens up things from a group collaboration perspective, allowing several people to work on map entries at once.

There are a few other tools that let you create your own Google Map. Google Map Builder is a paid-for software solution aimed at real estate agents that also lets you publish from spreadsheets. Mapbuilder.net is a free service that lets you to create your own maps using forms and a user interface. We're still waiting for a 'map this' button in Google Spreadsheets to tie this all together.

Our test mashup is after the jump.
