Rare White Humpback Whale, Migaloo, Spotted - Pictures

RECORD numbers of humpback whales are on their annual migration up Australia's east coast, including the rare white whale Migaloo, scientists say.

A White male Migaloo humpback whale was spotted off Heron Island on Queensland’s central coast by the resort staff on a fishing trip. was spotted this week off Heron Island, on Queensland's central coast, by resort staff on a fishing trip.

Ben Friese, was one of the lucky guys on board who encountered this rare Migaloo and said it was one in a million chance. The whale was estimated to be 14m.

Before that they were watching some dolphins in action and suddenly this Migaloo popped out.

This white whale surfaced meters from the boat and then swam underneath the vessel as the crew looked stunned.

Migaloo was also spotted by researchers off Stradbroke Island late last week. A team of researchers is conducting a six-week survey at Point Lookout on the island, counting the number of humpback whales migrating north to the Great Barrier Reef. One of the group, Dr David Paton, scotched rumours of an albino Migaloo offspring.

While there have been several sightings of a white humpback calf in recent weeks, Dr Paton said the chances of Migaloo producing an albino calf were slim.

Dr. Paton said any albino animals have low fertility rate, so it will be impossible for them to produce a healthy offspring like the one spotted. And even the chances they can reproduce an albino offspring are slimmer.

"The probability is he may well be an albino, but he could also just be an animal with white pigmentation," Dr Paton said.

Besides this rare white male, the Migaloo humpbacks are doing great with a healthy population and with a low death rate based on the surveys done so far by a research team led by Dr. Mike Noad.

"It seems that these whales are happy, and they're literally breeding like rabbits at the moment."

Here are more pictures of the white male migaloo whales.

Potential Cure For HIV Discovered

In a breakthrough that could potentially lead to a cure for HIV infection, scientists have discovered a way to remove the virus from infected cells, a study released Thursday said.

The scientists have a developed a novel technique that is unlike the previous ones used so far. They engineered an enzyme which attacks the DNA of the HIV virus and cuts it out of the infected cell, thus destroying the HIV viruses according to the study published in Science magazine.

The enzyme is still in the developmental stages, but clinical study for about three months in the lab showed that it eliminated HIV virus from the infected cells. Thus has shown a glimmer of hope for the 40 million people infected worldwide.

"A customized enzyme that effectively excises integrated HIV-1 from infected cells in vitro might one day help to eradicate (the) virus from AIDS patients," Alan Engelman, of Harvard University's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, wrote in an article accompanying the study.

Current treatments suppress the HIV virus from other healthier cells and delay the onset of AIDS and extend the life of infected patients.

The HIV is deadly because they insert itself into the body’s cells and force those cells to produce new infection and spread quickly.

"Consequently the virus becomes inextricably linked to the host, making it virtually impossible to 'cure' AIDS patients of their HIV-1 infection," Engelman explained.

With the new approach by the German scientists, the enzyme developed might attack and destroy the HIV, if it is safe to use on people without any adverse side effects.

The researchers engineered an enzyme called Tre which removes the virus from the genome of infected cells by recognizing and then recombining the structure of the virus's DNA.

The HIV virus avoids detection by reverting to a resting state within infected cells and then ceases to produce the virus for months or even years and then resurfacing again. If the enzymes identifies HIV virus without any problem then it will remove this biggest obstacle says Engelman.

"Although favorable results would represent perhaps only a baby step toward eventual use in patients, the discovery of the Tre recombinase proves that enzymatic removal of integrated HIV-1 from human chromosomes is a current-day reality," he said.

The researchers who developed the enzyme were optimistic about their ability to design additional enzymes which would target other parts of the virus's DNA. The lead researcher Indrani Sarkar of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden however said significant barriers need to be overcome before they use this enzyme. First the enzyme needs to be efficient and delivered safe to the infected part and won’t cause adverse side effects.

However, she is optimistic that this clinical study will form a useful basis for the development of future therapies.

Change Routes Faster in Google Maps - Just Drag and Drop

Google Maps added another great feature, which I think separates it from other maps sites like Yahoo, MSN and others.

Before, when we get directions in Google Maps, we set a starting point and a final destination point, Google Maps or other maps gives the best route mostly through highways, but if you want to take an alternate route, then it is tedious or you have to do a number of iterations before you get the desired route you want. Now Google Maps has made it easier, for example in the picture shown below, it shows the route from Mountain View to Palo Alto, but if you want to change the route to make it pass through Stanford, just drag the line and drop it to Stanford. This will give a newer route and also at the left hand side the route details are updated as well. You can then print this for yourself or give it to your friends and family.

Just give it a try here, it shows the map from Montreal, Canada to Orlando, Florida, drag the line and you can change it whatever you like.

The second picture shows a slightly different route that avoids New York Traffic.

When you move the mouse over this blue line it will say "drag to change route".

Also, if you are not sure where exactly you can drag the map line, on the left hand side you see the search results and you see the "edit" button, you can click the edit button and type the actual place you want this route to pass through. When you enter the new place, the map automatically updates to a newer route.

So you can change the route in two ways, either drag and drop the marker in the map or you can edit the search results.

The video demonstrates how this new feature in the Google Map works.

The iPhone scorecard is in

A Critical consensus on iPhones have been reached by four major tech writers, Walt Mossberg from WSJ, Ed Baig from USA Today, David Pogue from New York Times, and Steven Levy from Newseek. They all say "buy the phone if you could afford it".
Walt Mossberg from Wall Street Journal, David Pogue from New York Times, Ed Baig from USA today and Steven Levy from Newsweek, did reviews yesterday for the first time a full review of an iPhone. What was their overall verdict on the iPhones; they have given it full marks and gave a consensus opinion to buy Apple’s iPhone if one can afford it.

Valleywag analyzed their reviews and gave scores out of 10 in ten different categories. Each score was assigned based on the strength of a reviewer’s language. For example “Beautiful” was worth 10 points and “Pokey” was worth 2 points. Walt Mossberg gave the highest score, 81 across all ten categories out of a maximum score of 100. The average score of the iPhone was 76.75, the value would have been higher if not for the sluggishness of AT&T’s Edge data network. Wonder what was the main reason for Apple to choose a slower Edge network compared to other speedier 3G networks? Usually Apple is proactive but in this case they settled for a slower one.

Click here to get the full table view.

The glass screen seems not to be a big issue here, it is able to withstand the hand touching and poking. Best thing it doesn’t produce any scratches or marks. The screens are visible under bright sunlight, I can’t say the same about my phone, had to go to a shaded area to see the screen sometimes.

The battery power is excellent and as advertised, the glass screen also helps in this case by drawing less power than the plastic screen counterparts.

Will you buy an iPhone based on what you have heard so far and what the above four reviewers had said about the iPhone? I am content with Treo phone for now of course with reservations, but will buy for sure in the future; it gives an experience just what one needs in a good smart phone.

Google Redesigns Google Docs and Spreadsheets

Google Docs has a new interface better than the earlier versions, the new interface addresses many of the changes demanded by the users. Docs has the new Folders option and files can be drag and dropped easily to folders. Google Docs' new interface has an AJAX like feel, it is faster than before (but I couldn’t see any noticeable difference). It also has a new option folder; there is no more “Tags” feature. You can drag and drop the files to the folder easily. But before you do that you need to create a new folder and name the folder. But loss of “Tags” is going to pose a big problem for Google, though many seem to prefer “Folders” option. GMail users may also want a similar “Folders” feature.

When you visit Google Docs, you will see something like the picture shown below. Has a new Trash icon, all your deleted files will be there, until you permanently delete it like you do in GMail. The second thing you will notice “All Folders” so you can drag and drop files from the right either the spreadsheet or the docs file. Then it has a category “Items by Type”, now it has Docs and Spreadsheets, soon presentation and other types will be added here. The last one shows the shared contents, who are the ones you are sharing the file with.

There is a good search bar; it suggests the various options after you begin to type the first letter. It is similar to Google Toolbar “Suggest” option.

Cnet.com gives a good rating for this new Google Docs. Garret Rogers, ZDNet, wants one more feature added to Google Docs, to use it in an offline mode.

I use Google Docs a lot, very handy but some of the new features they added here are not very good especially using Folders instead of Tags. Now every file has many key features, so we cannot plug one file in one folder only, we need several keywords or Tags, which helps to organize the files much better. For example if you have a topic “Apple releases iPhone via AT&T”, here there are three keywords, Apple, iPhone, AT&T, so we cannot put this file in one folder only, tags helps us to assign the same file in three tags, “Apple, iPhone, AT&T”. Tags are just an advanced version of folders, makes it easier to organize things. So, I don’t know why Google went back to “Folders” option.

Another problem, after you finish the file, there is an extra window open, so if you write four files, it will leave four main windows open, which is confusing instead of opening only one main window. This is not a major problem, but still there is.

Except for the interface, the main Docs or Spreadsheet program remains the same as old ones, nothing new has been added. So, if Google Apps wants to compete against Microsoft Office they should do better than this, I hope they do.

Do you like the new Google Docs?

Useful Tips for Used Coffee Grounds

After you make coffee at home, you have coffee grounds which you throw in trash, but do you know there are many uses for it. And some of them are given below:

Deodorizer: To remove unwanted food smells inside the fridge or freezer, dry the coffee grounds in a cookie sheet and then put it in a bowl in your fridge. Fill old nylons with the dry grounds, and tie off the ends. You can hang this in closets; it will absorb odors, also in the fridge.

Plant food: Many plants such as rosebushes, azaleas, rhododendrons, evergreen and camellias prefer acidic soil, coffee grounds helps in that regard, so you can drop the coffee grounds around the plant. Also the grounds can add nutrients if you are composting the plant wastes. Plants love some remnants of your cup of coffee, but make sure there is no sugar or cream, just plain black coffee. Want to start a worm farm? Mix horse manure and coffee grounds for your 'soil', just like the professionals.

Insect repellant: Coffee grounds are good ant repellent, just sprinkle some coffee grounds near ant hills or at borders where you want ants to be around. This will drive away ants to a different area. Also it helps to repel snails and slugs. Earl Proulx's "Yankee Home Hints" recommends sprinkling coffee grounds around your garden to eliminate cutworms and ants. He also says that "to get rid of ants in the lawn, mix about 1 pound of coffee grounds in 1 quart of hot water and pour this on anthills. Red ants, which make big hills, will require a big dousing."

Dye: By steeping coffee grounds in hot water, you can make brown dye for fabric, paper and even Easter eggs.

Furniture scratch cover-up: Steep coffee grounds in a little water and apply this paste to furniture scratches with a Q-tip, they say it helps to cover up scratches.

Cleaning product: If you have tough greases on dishes, or on floors, sprinkle coffee grounds acts as an abrasive and can be used as a good scouring agent. Flush them down your drains and let the abrasive action clean your pipes. (Not recommend for septic systems).

Kitty repellent: To keep kitty from using the garden as her personal powder room, sprinkle grounds mixed with orange peels around your plants.

Flea dip: Rid your pets of fleas with old coffee grounds. Shampoo your dog or cat as usual and when they are wet, rub their fur down thoroughly with coffee grounds all the way to their skin and work them in. Rinse the coffee grounds away. With this they say, it will make the pet’s fur, soft and clean and fleas will disappear.

Dust inhibitor: Cleaning fireplace is not easy creates lots of dust, but when you sprinkle wet coffee grounds over the ashes first, it keeps the ash dust in control.

Cellulite reducer: This may sound weird, but most of the high priced cellulite creams have coffee in them. Here is the procedure: Mix 1/4 cup warm used coffee grounds and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. While standing over an old towel or newspaper, apply the mixture to your "problem areas". Next, wrap the areas with shrink wrap and leave on for several minutes. Unwind the wrap, brush loose grounds off your skin and then shower with warm water.

Skin and Hair Care: Used grounds make a good skin facial pack similar to a mud pack. They can be used for skin dermabrasion.

If you repeat this procedure twice a week, you will see the difference.

Apple iPhone Reviews Are Rolling In - Wall Street Journal Review

Till now Apple iPhone reviews were not allowed by Apple to keep it a secret until it is released coming Friday, even though they had given this phone to many the last few months for testing and personal use. And the reviews are starting to roll in.

The embargoes have lifted iPhone reviews are starting to roll in.

One of them shown here is Wall Street Journal’s Walter S. Mossberg, Personal Technology Columnist, who has given two thumbs up for the product. He says he was worked more than 16 years on tech products and hasn’t seen so much hype and expectations. He has used the phone in almost every location to see how it works ranging from Starbucks to Fenway Park and to the streets. He said iPhone is the most radical hand held computer he has ever tested. iPhone is worth every hype.

The phone is thinner than any other phone in the market and has a very big screen compared to other smartphones in the market.

Initially Mossberg was hesitant about the lack of keyboard in iPhone, but he says after 5 days of use, he doesn’t feel the need for need it and works as effective if not better than a keyboard. It is better than Treo’s tiny keyboard. So, he says “keyboard is a non-issue” in iPhone.

Has the best web browser and you can see all the parts of the article by moving right or left in a seamless browsing and also can zoom in to see the main content.

E-mail system in iPhone is as good as the one in PC use. Any pictures shown are right there in the e-mail, no need to click an extra time to see the attachment.

The Phone is excellent; the voice quality is the best Mossberg has heard so far.

There is a drawback in iPhone however, it is carrier restricted, it can be only used with AT&T, and if your locality or area doesn’t have AT&T coverage then one won’t be able to use iPhone.

The Edge Carrier used by iPhone is very slow compared to 3G networks used by some parts of AT&T, but it overcomes with a Wi-Fi option, so if you have a Wi-Fi option, iPhone web browsing will run faster than Edge network.

In the end he says iPhone is a fascinating product, raises the bar for all smartphones in the market.

How Much Water is on Earth?

How much Fresh Water is available on Earth for consumption? It is about 326 million cubic miles of fresh water enough to fill the United States with a lake 90 miles deep. A majority of fresh water is locked in icecaps.
If you poured the entire world’s water on the United States and could contain it, you’d create a lake 90 miles deep. That is how much fresh water is present in the Earth. It is nearly 326 million cubic miles of water.

The Earth is covered in most parts with water, 72 percent of surface area, but 97 percent of the water is salty and not suited for drinking.

Some facts about the freshwater that is available on the surface:

• 70 percent of freshwater is locked in ice caps
• Less than 1 percent of the world’s freshwater is readily accessible
• 6 countries (Brazil, Russia, Canada, Indonesia, China and Colombia) have 50 percent of the freshwater reserves
• One-third of the world’s population lives in “water-stressed” countries

As you see the fresh water is not distributed evenly in the world, some countries like Brazil, Russia, Canada, Indonesia, China and Columbia have the bulk of fresh water, while others like the African countries have less fresh water.

There is much more freshwater stored in the ground than there is in liquid form on the surface, according to the USGS. Also, Scientists have found that more fresh water is hidden inside the earth in China. Scientists scanning the deep interior of Earth have found evidence of a vast water reservoir beneath eastern Asia that is at least the volume of the Arctic Ocean.

There are technologies that convert salt water to fresh water, desalination using seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) membrane technology produced by General Electric. These are currently employed in Algeria and provides more than 20% of fresh water.

So far there are no shortages of fresh water here, but still we have to be careful in how much we waste water. There is an American saying “Save it for a Rainy Day”.

Huge 'Ocean' Discovered Inside Earth

Scientists find a large reservoir of water inside the Earth with a volume of the Arctic Ocean. They analyzed 600,000 seismic records and found water buried in slabs of rock underneath the city of Beijing.
Scientists scanning the deep interior of Earth have found evidence of a vast water reservoir beneath eastern Asia that is at least the volume of the Arctic Ocean. The discovery marks the first time such a large body of water has found in the planet's deep mantle.

Michael Wysession, a Seismologist at Washington University at St. Louis and his former graduate student Jesse Lawrence, now at the University of California, San Diego found this discovery and will be reported in a monograph to be published at the American Geophysical Union.

They both analyzed 600,000 seismograms records of waves generated by earthquakes traveling through the Earth and collected from instruments scattered around the planet.

They found at a particular region beneath Asia, near Beijing, China, the Seismic waves seem to dampen or attenuate and slow down slightly. They tried to figure out what causes this damping effect and found that water can slow down the speed of waves.

Wysession explained:
Lots of damping and a little slowing match the predictions for water very well.
Previous predictions calculated that if a cold slab of the ocean floor were to sink thousands of miles into the Earth's mantle, the hot temperatures would cause water stored inside the rock to evaporate out.

Earth has a central hot core of magma, so any water present will be evaporated quickly. When a slab of rock sinks it carries the water along with it. Initially the water is cold, but it heats up and evaporates the deeper it travels.

This evaporated water then rises up into an overlying region which becomes saturated with water. It is shown below here in the red portions of the image. Most of the red portions are seen in China, Beijing area:

"It would still look like solid rock to you," Wysession told LiveScience. "You would have to put it in the lab to find the water in it."
Although they appear solid, the composition of some ocean floor rocks is up to 15 per cent water. The water molecules are stuck in between the mineral structure of the rocks. When these rocks are heated, the water then dehydrates. Wysession says it is like heating the clay and firing it to get all the water out.

The researchers estimate that up to 0.1 per cent of the rock sinking down into the Earth's mantle in that part of the world is water, which works out to about the equivalent of the volume of water in the Arctic Ocean. Wysession said it is not an exact calculation, but gives an overall estimate of how much water is locked up inside.

Wysession has dubbed this new underground feature as the "Beijing anomaly". The reason being they found seismic attenuation or damping the highest beneath the capital city of China.
"They thought it was very, very interesting," Wysession said. "China is under greater seismic risk than just about any country in the world, so they are very interested in seismology."
Water covers 70 per cent of Earth's surface and one of its many functions is to act like a lubricant for the movement of continental plates.
"Look at our sister planet, Venus," Wysession said. "It is very hot and dry inside Venus, and Venus has no plate tectonics. All the water probably boiled off, and without water, there are no plates. The system is locked up, like a rusty Tin Man with no oil."
It is a great discovery by Michael Wysession and Jesse Lawrence.

Apple iPhone Rate Plans Revealed

Apple release the iPhone data plans today in their website, have plans available for individual, family and for existing AT&T customers. The charges are comparable to existing data plans of Smart Phones and Blackberries.
Apple announced iPhone data plans today, the rates are comparable if not better than many existing plans available for smartphones and Blackberry devices. All iPhone service plans, individual, family, will have visual voicemail and unlimited data, Internet and E-mail, only difference is the number of minutes and SMS text messages one needs.

The plan starts at $59.99 for basic options with 450 minutes, 5000 weekend minutes and 200 SMS Text messages as shown below:

The Family plan is shown below:

For existing AT&T customers there are only a small additional monthly fee of $20 for the iPhone data plan, which should be excellent for them.

For now AT&T is the exclusive carrier for iPhone. But if you are able to get the iPhone without an AT&T data plan, then you can still use iPhone with other phone carriers.

I compared the above rates with my Sprint Plan they are pretty much the same. Apple has started well instead of demanding a high service rate for the iPhones. The phones may be costlier to begin with, but other phones when they started did the same. I paid $699 for Palm Treo 650 when they released it first, now they have come down to $299 with the phone plan. I am sure Apple will release cheaper phones in the future.

Do you see any difference between your phones data plans compared to Apple’s iPhone data plan?

Aspartame linked to cancer: study

Italian researchers at the Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna, Italy find aspartame on rats causes leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer. FDA and “Equal” manufacturer dismissed the Italian study's claims.
Morando Soffritti of the Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna, Italy, and colleagues tested aspartame on rats, and found it causes leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer.

Aspartame is the name for an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener, aspartyl-phenylalanine-1-methyl ester; i.e., the methyl ester of the dipeptide of the amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine.

This sweetener is marketed under a number of trademark names, including Equal, NutraSweet, Canderel, and is an ingredient of approximately 6,000 consumer foods and beverages sold worldwide. It is commonly used in diet soft drinks, and is often provided as a table condiment.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on the other hand says there is no need for worries, and doesn’t need an urgent review on the safety aspects of aspartame.

A US Consumer group called for a review after the Italian researchers published a new study showing aspartame, widely found in soft drinks, might cause leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer in rats.

Centre for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) executive director Michael Jacobson said the same Italian foundation did an earlier experiment which showed the same results.

Aspartame is used by Equal, NutraSweet, Canderel; they are mostly used by diet soft drinks and also come in packets to be used for coffee, tea or on food.

Morando Soffritti of the Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna, Italy, and colleagues studied more than 4,000 rats and when they were fed by high doses of the sweetener raised the likelihood of several types of cancer.

"On the basis of the present findings, we believe that a review of the current regulations governing the use of aspartame cannot be delayed," Soffritti's team wrote in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, which is published by the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

"This review is particularly urgent with regard to aspartame-containing beverages, heavily consumed by children."

FDA spokesman Michael Herndon responded and said the agency has not yet reviewed this study. Their conclusions are not consistent with the large number of FDA studies on aspartame including five previously conducted negative chronic carcinogenicity studies.

"Therefore, at this time, FDA finds no reason to alter its previous conclusion that aspartame is safe as a general purpose sweetener in food."

Jacobson said researchers in previous studies all killed rats at the age of two years.

Allowing the rats to live longer may have been a better way to assess the natural risk of cancer, he said.

The CSPI said the Acceptable Daily Intake of aspartame in the United States was 50 mg per kilogram of body weight, equivalent to a 20 kg child drinking 2.5 cans of diet soft drink a day, or a 68 kilogram adult drinking about 7.5 cans a day. The Italian researchers found a cancer risk at double the US Acceptable Daily Intake. Even though not many will drink that much in a day, but still drinking smaller amounts for a long time may pose the same cancer risks.

Merisant which makes Equal like the FDA dismissed the Italian claims.

"The safety of aspartame has been confirmed by regulatory authorities in more than 100 countries, including the US Food and Drug Administration, Health Canada, and the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Food, as well as by experts with the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization and World Health Organization."

Jacobson, CSPI said people shouldn’t panic but they should stop buying soft drinks and foods containing aspartame.

I don’t use any artificial sweetener, just plain sugar in smaller amounts. If you are using Equal, NutraSweet and Canderel, just be careful. Since FDA won’t be doing any verification and the manufacturers just denying instead of proving that it is safe, one should use caution in drinking soft drinks made of aspartame. You can also use cinnamon as sweetener, which is healthy and safe.

Also read the side effects of Aspartame, causes more than 92 side effects.

Google to Buy GrandCentral, an Online Phone Service

TechCrunch reports that Google is acquiring GrandCentral, an online phone service that links all the phone numbers (home, office, mobile) into one unique number, where messages can be received and organized for easy tracking.

The video demonstrates how the GrandCentral Service works.

TechCrunch reports that Google is about to acquire GrandCentral, a service that links all your phone numbers into one phone number.

GrandCentral is an online phone service that helps the user to combine his or her phone numbers (mobile, home phone, office phone) into one number, so they can access all their messages at one place.

GrandCentral has the following features.

• Check your messages by phone, email, or online
• Keep all your messages online for eternity
• Record and store your phone calls (just like voicemail)
• Quickly (and secretly) block an annoying caller
• Click-to-dial from your address book
• Surprise your callers with a custom voicemail greeting
• Turn your MP3s into the ring tones your callers hear
• Forward, download, and add notes to your messages

It is free for now; it gives this one phone number for life. The number is unique and is not tied to a particular phone or location, so you can use wherever you go and get the messages from friends, family and office.

This service integrates all your existing phones, numbers and voicemail boxes in one place.

The service is available in US and Canada; once Google purchases it officially it will extend it to other countries.

They can easily extend this service to GMail, Google Talk or add it as a part of Google Apps. It is a great buy for Google if the sale is approved.

Protection against Cold with Linga Mudra

Linga Mudra Exercise

Protect against colds with a simple yoga exercise.
Yesterday I had severe cold. I did ‘Ling Mudra’. Within 15 minutes, I went to a deep sleep. When I woke up, I was completely relieved from cold.

During cold weather, our bodies need more warmth. We take care of this need, by using warm clothes. Sometimes, this may not be enough. Ling Mudra provides that warmth.

Inside human body, there are specific energies and elements – namely air, water, space, earth and fire elements that help it to survive. For example, during the cold weather, the body needs more fire element.

This is a simple exercise like accupressure, the Linga Mudra is done by the following way and is shown in the picture:

Interlock the fingers, with right thumb over the left thumb. Extend the left thumb as in the picture, which would resemble a Shiva Lingam – the Hindu God.

Do this for 10 to 15 minutes, and breathe in and out normally. After this exercise you will see your body temperature warm up. The author claims that even in Himalayas where the Mt. Everest is, some practice this and have been found to sweat after this exercise. So you can do this when you have cold fever or if you feel cold sometimes.

Instant Cure for a Sore Throat in Minutes with Cayenne Powder

Cayenne Pepper

Site recommends gargling with Cayenne Powder cures Sore Throat instantaneously
The author of the article writes a cure for sore throat and he suggests a natural remedy promises it cures sore throat instantaneously. He had sore throat for about a week. He tried cough drops, and amoxicillin and antibiotics didn't work, kept getting worse and worse. So, he gave up on regular medication and went to the web to find a remedy and found this link. Earthclinic.com recommended him to gargle with Cayenne Powder. Initially he doubted this but after reading the comments in that page, he tried. Since Cayenne Pepper is very hot, he managed it somehow just to keep it gargling and spitting it out. It might burn a little in the end, he recommends a simple fresh water drink would be suitable.

Since there is no perfect recipe for this Cayenne powder treatment, here he comes up with a simple one so others can follow:

* 1 standard drinking glass of hot to warm water
* 1 teaspoon of cayenne powder
* a couple pinches of salt for good measure (most people say its not necessary but it won’t hurt)

That’s it! Just simply take a mouthful and gargle away. There are two things that I want to point out though. One you will need to constantly stir the elixir right before you gargle as the cayenne likes to settle at the bottom and two you may want to gargle with your eyes closed as maybe I’m just a bad gargler, but one time I did gargle some of the mixture into my eye (note: cayenne pepper in the eye burns)

He claims within minutes he could see a noticeable change from not swallowing anymore to marked improvement. He kept continuing the treatment on and off for about 45 minutes, and his sore throat kept decreasing with every minute of this treatment. He woke up the next day and found himself totally cured. He said all it cost 10 cent ofCayenne powder. It is worth a try before you try expensive medical treatment, besides it is natural. He says he feels much better now.

Besides this Cayenne pepper helps reduces or heals the following:

* Improved blood flow
* Improved digestion
* Relieves chronic pain including
* Pain for diabetes
* headaches
* toothaches
* post-surgical pain
* Muscle pain due to fibromylagia
* Nerve pain
* Osteoarthritis pain
* Rheumatoid Arthritis pain
* Relieves gas
* Raises metabolism
* Stop heart attack

If you have problems taking Cayenne powder directly, you can try the following given by one of the bloggers.

"You can also use lime or lemon juice, perhaps add some water to make it easier to drink. It all depends upon your taste."

"add a pinch of cayenne to the juice and mix. "

"If I feel a cold coming I add cayenne, lemon and honey to a cup of hot water, stir well and drink it. Do NOT use more than a pinch of cayenne though and you need to stir after each swallow to keep the cayenne from settling."

Before you try this consult with doctor, friends and family. I will try it when I get Sore throat next time and update here, my friend says I am like Guinea pig for her.

Have you heard of such a treatment?

Two-year-old 'Matilda' has an IQ 152 equal to Stephen Hawking

Her parents knew Georgia Brown was bright. After all, she could count to ten, recognised her colours and was even starting to dabble with French.

But it was only when their bubbly little two-year-old took an IQ test that her towering intellect was confirmed.

Georgia has become the youngest female member of Mensa after scoring a genius-rated IQ of 152.

Georgia Brown

Georgia Brown has an official genius-rated IQ - Intelligence Quotient - of 152

This puts her in the same intellectual league, proportionate to her age, as physicist Stephen Hawking.

According to an expert in gifted children, Georgia is the brightest two-year-old she has ever met.

Parents Martin and Lucy Brown have always regarded their youngest child as a remarkably quick learner.

She was crawling at five months and walking at nine months.

By 14 months, she was getting herself dressed.

"She spoke really early - by 18 months she was having proper conversations," Mrs Brown said.

"She would say, 'Hello I'm Georgia, I'm one'. She was also putting her shoes on and putting them on the right feet."

Georgia was so perceptive that after one outing to the theatre to see Beauty and the Beast she solemnly informed her parents: "I didn't like Gaston (the villain). He was mean and arrogant."

Struck by the similarities between her daughter and Matilda, the title character in the Roald Dahl story about a gifted child, Mrs Brown began to worry about Georgia's future education.

She contacted Professor Joan Freeman, a specialist educational psychologist, for advice.

Professor Freeman applied the standard Stamford-Binet Intelligence Scale test to Georgia and was amazed to find this was too limited to map her creative abilities.

Georgia with her mother Lucy, she is the youngest of five children

She said: "Even at two she was very thoughtful.

"What Georgia did on some questions was of a higher quality than that which was necessary to gain a mark.

"She swept right through it like a hot knife through butter.

"I would ask her things like 'give me two blocks or give me ten blocks' and she would manage it as easily as you would expect a five-year-old.

"In one test I asked her to draw a circle and she did it so perfectly.

"Most adults would struggle to do that. Her circle was near to being perfect.

"It shows she can physically hold a pen well but also that she understands the concept of a circle."

Georgia, who is at nursery school, was also able to tell the difference between pink and purple - a skill which most children learn at primary school age.

Professor Freeman said: "I said to her, 'What a pretty pink skirt, and you have tights and shoes to match'.

"She said, 'They're not pink, they're purple'. Most children go to school aged five and start to learn colours, let alone knowing the difference between pink and purple.

"I have to keep reminding myself that she is only two."

To the amazement of the family, who live in Aldershot, Hampshire, Georgia scored 152 points on the IQ test, putting her in the top 0.2 per cent of the population. Those with an average IQ would score around 100 points in the same test.

Georgia was then invited to join Mensa, the High IQ society whose members have IQs in the top 2 per cent of the population. Georgia is one of only 30 Mensa members under the age of ten.

Mrs Brown, chief executive of a charity, believes Georgia has benefited by growing up as the youngest of five children.

She has been absorbing information from her older brothers and sisters and father, a self-employed carpenter, while not receiving any special treatment.

"There is always someone around to offer her something," her mother said.

"But she still has temper tantrums, like you wouldn't believe, throwing herself on the floor.

"She doesn't think she's better and cleverer than everyone else. She is a very kind and loving child."

Georgia, who has a "wicked sense of humour" is as busy as any toddler, enjoying a schedule of ballet classes, listening to stories, dancing, singing, sport and even watching the TV.

Bottled Water Has High Environmental Costs

Bottled water may seem to be pure and safe but it has high environmental costs, says Worldwatch Institute. Packaging and shipping soaks up energy, and many of the plastic bottles are not recycled.
Bottled water, the world's fastest growing beverage, carries a heavy environmental cost, adding plastic to landfills and putting pressure on natural springs, the author of a new US report said today.

Ling Li, Worldwatch Institute says that bottled water may be pure but is expensive in terms of environmental and economic costs. You can see from this article how much 1 liter bottled water costs and impacts the environment. In the developed countries, people demand clean, safe, tasty and healthy attributes in water, while in under developed countries even getting normal water is a luxury for them especially to one billion people in the world.

In bottling the water from pure sources there is significant environmental damage, the water is depleted from rare underground aquifers by withdrawing it in large amounts. There is too much energy consumed to make one bottle of water, packaging, storing and shipping the bottled water. There is an additional environmental cost in using millions of tons of oil derived plastic to make the bottles.

Ms. Ling says, the bottled industry benefits the most by charging the consumers a high price, but does little to stop this environmental damage. And they don’t help much the poorer countries in giving them safe water.

Worldwatch estimated 35 to 50 per cent of urban dwellers in Africa and Asia lack adequate access to safe potable water.

The bottle used in bottling water uses polyethylene terephthalate or PET which requires less energy to recycle and less chlorine into the atmosphere, but sadly the recycling rates have diminished so only 23.1 percent of these bottles are recycled in 2005 compared to 39.7 in 1995. As a result many of the PET bottles are not recycled and remain in trash collection areas.

Bottled water costs from 240 to 10,000 times as much as water straight from the tap. In dollars, that means such water sold in most industrialized countries costs $US500 to $US1000 ($605 to $1210) a cubic meter compared with US50 cents (60 cents) a cubic meter in California, where the quality of tap water is high.

Worldwide the consumption of bottled water is on the rise, it has doubled almost twice between 1997 and 2005, and with United States the largest consumer drank nearly 28.6 billion liters in 2005. India, China, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Germany, France, Indonesia and Spain round out the top 10.

Bottled water maybe a convenient one to drink pure water but it costs a lot in terms of environmental damage. One should try to use other means to drink water, can install water filters at home like Brita or Pur Water filters.

1 liter Bottled Water uses 26 Liters Water + 1 Kg Fossil Fuel + 1 Pound CO2

Fiji Bottled Water

Pablo Päster at Triple Pundit finds 1 liter Bottled Water uses 26 Liters Water + 1 Kg Fossil Fuel + 1 Pound CO2
In summary, the manufacture and transport of that one kilogram bottle of Fiji water consumed 26.88 kilograms of water (7.1 gallons) .849 Kilograms of fossil fuel (one litre or .26 gal) and emitted 562 grams of Greenhouse Gases (1.2 pounds).

What is the cost of a Bottled water that is made in an island and transported to the US? That is what Pablo Päster, an MBA graduate and Sustainability Engineer at Triple Pundit, went to find out and did a exhaustive study of the cost of a litre of Fiji Water to America. The bottles are manufactured in China an taken to Fiji Islands for bottling and found out that the process takes more water to make the bottled water it holds. Once the bottling is done is shipped to the US via a ship and he calculated the amount of fossil fuel and Carbon emissions and came up with the above figure.

This will be true for not only Fiji Water but also for other brands of bottled waters.

Luckily I don't use any bottled water. I either use Water filtered water at home it doesn't cause any of the above, except the waste after the filter is used. If there is a recycling for it, we can solve that.

Do you use bottled water?

Vacuum designer Dyson sets sights on hand drying

Dyson introduces a novel hand dryer, Dyson Airblade to great reviews. It dries hands in less than 12 seconds with a blast of air at ambient temperature. The Airblade costs $1,400 and will be used primarily at Hospitals, Airports, and Theaters.
A prestigious British design firm wants to make sure your hands are clean. Dyson--the people behind those expensive, yet oddly compelling vacuum cleaners--have begun to promote their latest invention: the Dyson Airblade, an energy-efficient hand dryer that strips water droplets off your mitts in a matter of seconds.

Sir Dyson the man behind the famous vacuum has come up with another novel product in the form of Dyson Airblade, a hand dryer. It has a slot, and when the wet hands are put in, a curtain of air traveling at 400 miles per hour removes the moisture from the hands. The drying area is childproof and allows only limited space for hands to go in and whisks away the moisture under 12 seconds or less. Unlike other hand dryers you see in Malls, theatres and airports, there is no heat involved only the force strips away the moisture. The air remains at ambient or room temperature.

The air movement is generated by the same motor that is used in Dyson vacuum cleaners. It spins at 85,000 to 90,000 revolutions per minute according to John Churchill design manager at Dyson. This is sold only in Japan.

Through testing, Dyson discovered that the motor gives off a blast of air that's ideal for stripping moisture from objects in confined areas.

The company plans to show one off next Tuesday at the AMC Empire 25 Theater in New York.

What is the difference between Dyson’s and other hand dryers from Mitsubishi and other manufacturers?

Dyson claims the following advantages:

• Dyson Airblade is more efficient, other dryers like Mitsubishi takes about 20 seconds to dry the hands, while Dyson takes less than 12 seconds to dry. The Airblade's drying time is reduced because the speed of the air in the drying chamber is faster.
• The Airblade also comes with an HEPA filter blocks the bacteria in the air before it is blasted into the hands.
• The design is more stylish looking than other brand models.
• It is 80 percent more cost efficient than conventional heat hand dryers.
• It is 90 percent more cost efficient than paper towels in the long run, the latter had to be restocked and produces more waste.

The Airblade costs $1,400 and will be marketed to hospitals, theaters and other public venues where wiping and hand washing occur.

The demonstration for this Dyson Airblade in Japan so far has generated great reviews, and most of the people are amazed how it works efficiently. The Cnet.com reporter after using for the first time, wanted to applaud it.

Another great product from Dyson, hope he creates a miniature one for homes, so we can use less paper towels and napkins.

84% Of Sunscreens Unsafe Or Ineffective

Environmental Working Group finds, out of 783 sunscreen products only 16% of them are safe, block both UVA and UVB radiation, remain stable under the sun. FDA regulations are either a minimum or non-existent.
New study finds a host of suspect ingredients in popular sun lotions.

Only 16% of sunscreens on the market are both safe and effective, according to a new analysis by the Environmental Working Group.

Environment Working Group analyzed more than 783 sunscreen products and found only 125 of them blocked both UVA and UVB radiation, remained stable in sunlight and contained few ingredients that are suspected of being health hazards.

The analysis employed 400 scientific studies, information from industry and regulators, and nearly 60 government, academic and industry databases.

This analysis found many sunscreen products have labels that are misleading and advertise attributes they don’t have.

The Food and Drug Administration is supposed to set safety standards for sunscreen lotions, but so far they have missed many deadlines, as a result there is no control in sunscreen products. Since there are no standards, the Environmental Working Group has created a searchable database that will help the customers choose the safe sunscreen products from their list. This database will follow strict criteria and choose the products appropriately.

Here are the Environmental Working Group’s 17 most safe and effective sun screen products.

1. Badger SPF 30
2. Peter Thomas Roth Titanium Dioxide Sunblock (SPF 30)
3. Lavera Sun Screen Neutral SPF 40
4. UV Natural Baby SPF30+ Broad Spectrum Sunscreen
5. Vanicream Sunscreen Sport (formerly Sunscreen SPF 35) (SPF 35)
6. UV Natural SPORT SPF 30& Very Water Resistant (old formulation)
7. California Baby SPF 30+ Sunblock Stick No Fragrance
8. California Baby SPF 30+ Sunblock Stick Everyday/Year-Round
9. Keys Soap Solar RX Sunblock (SPF 30) (old formulation)
10. KINeSYS KIDS Sunscreen Spray with Parsol 1789 (SPF 30+)
11. California Baby SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion Everyday/Year-Round
12. California Baby SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion Natural Bug Blend
13. California Baby SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion No Fragrance
14. Dr. Brandt Body Barrier Gel (SPF 30)
15. Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive FaceBlock (SPF 25)
16. Aubrey Organics Green Tea Sunblock For Children
17. Mustela Moderate Sun Protection Stick (SPF 20)

For the complete database, and a full analysis for this methodology and findings, click here.

I paid a high price for Neutrogena Sun screen product, thinking it will be safe, but is not in the safe list. I am wondering why they are charging a high price for an unsafe product. Since, there are no FDA guidelines, they and others will be charging higher and advertising more false claims. I wish there was a natural sun screen product.

Check whether your sunscreen product is in this safe list.

Google Talk gadget gets multiple user chat

The Google Talk gadget seems to be adding new features at a faster rate than the actual windows client these days — today they launched a new multiple user chat interface. The feature is a bit awkward due to the gadget-only functionality, but once you are using it, everything seems natural.

Multi-user chat was hinted at in April through the “Google in your language” initiative — but it was unclear at that time how the feature would actually manifest itself.

It is a good one if you are chatting frequently with a number of friends or clients at the same time. This feature is available in Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger. The only problem with this new feature is not available in Google Talk window rather in the Google Talk Gadget shown, which we can use in the web only. When you double click the contact you will see the friend or client tab and there you will see "Group Chat" and then you can invite other friends to talk in the group. They will be getting a link to chat online in the web.

This feature is not available in both the Google Talk Client as well as in GMail. Hopefully Google will add this feature there also. The contact will receive a message link as shown below, and once they click Group chat, it will take them to web chat area of your Google Talk gadget online.

Google Translate Launches Dictionary

Do you use translation software online?

I use Babel and Google Translation (Via toolbar) very handy. When dealing with multilingual customers, sometimes I translate what I write in English in their own language, makes it easier for them to understand. It is not a perfect translation but I tell them that it was translated via online and to forgive any mistakes in the translation.

Now I predominantly use Google Translation because the Google toolbar is a heaven sent. For example here is a Spanish page, which I want to be translated to English. With the Google Toolbar, I just click the translate button "Translate this page" it gives the following page. Before you have to go to a translation page, click the link or copy the whole page to be translated, the translate button in the Google Toolbar avoids the additional step. To add Google Toolbar click here. You will see the "Translate button" and you can choose the language you want it to convert to.

This Google translation is fine to convert the whole page, but what about a single word? Suppose you want to get the meaning of a single word and phrases for that word, you have to use other methods. But Google has solved it with a new addition today. You can get the definition and translation for a single word and it gives its usage in many sentences. This is much better than getting the word just translated. So it will help you to understand other languages better. Here is how it looks like with the new Google Translate online tool.

This new feature currently only works with five languages, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Korean. Other languages will follow soon.

Several weeks ago, Google also gave us the ability to search the "foreign web" in a three staged approach. First Google translates our search terms into the target language, then it queries Google for results with that translation, and finally it displays the results translated back into a language understood by the user.

Boss Donates Kidney to His Assistant

Lisa White and Chris Jerrigan. Ref: Heather Sanders (The News Herald)

It is a great story about Organ Donation and it happened recently in Morganton, North Carolina, US.

One boss gave his employee something better than a coffee mug for Administrative Assistants Day. He gave her a kidney.

Chris Jernigan, director of Southmountain Children and Family Services, gave the organ to his assistant, Lisa White.

"It's not difficult to donate an organ," Jernigan said. "I never did it to brag about it."

White has worked at Southmountain for 11 years. Seven years ago, she found she had polycystic kidney disease, which means her kidneys were covered by cysts.

The disease is genetic. White's aunt and uncle died from it. Her mom has it, and her brother just started dialysis for it.

She has known for two or three years she would need either dialysis or a transplant.

Jernigan said studies have shown a transplant patient remains healthier than a patient under dialysis.

When he saw the effect the disease was having on her, he said he knew he had to do something.

"I didn't have much of a choice," Jernigan said. "When I see someone in need and in pain, I want to help them."

White said she was shocked at first when Jernigan offered his kidney.

"I wasn't sure if he was kidding or serious," White said.

Jernigan and four others were tested to see if they would be a good match.

It turned out Jernigan was almost a perfect match.

Doctors told them Jernigan matched three out of six indicators, which is almost unheard of for someone who isn't a relative.

The match was a good sign, Jernigan said.

"God gave me two kidneys and the ability to live with one," he said. "The reason is to share one with someone who needs it."

Jernigan and White found the surgery was much easier than they anticipated.

Patients usually spend three days in the hospital after a kidney transplant.

Although they have to take it easy for about another two weeks, Jernigan and White are getting back to normal life.

Jernigan said more people should consider donating. There is a five-year waiting period for kidney transplants from a deceased donor, and there is less chance the organ will work and continue to work. A living donor is much better for successful results.

"All it does is give someone a chance at life," Jernigan said.

Will you donate organs? I will and I will donate all the necessary organs before getting cremated.

Why Didn't The Americans Adopt the Metric System?

Feet, yards, inches, miles, gallons, ounces, these may mean something to some people around the world, while others struggle with online converters or, worse, software designed to convert these values, that are not reliable most of the times.

How about fathoms, rods, chains, furlongs, leagues?

Only 3 countries don't follow the metric system of units and they are the U.S., Liberia and Myanmar, every other country since the 1960 follow the International System of Units (SI) ("Systéme International d'Unités" in French, hence "SI"). Metric units of mass, length and volume are widely used around the world for everyday use as well as for business and scientific purposes.

I have this problem, whenever we deal with Europe, we have to convert every unit and when we see the converted units it doesn't make any sense about the original value (is it better or worse?). US have stuck to the old system and for some reasons have not adopted the SI Unit system.

Initially they said there will be a high cost of conversion involved for the manufacturers, so they didn't want to convert it. But now a bulk of the products are produced overseas and America have become a more service oriented economy rather than an Industrial manufacturing economy, so conversion to SI units would not be a big problem.

One of the readers gave a plausible explanation for the US not using metric systems. The Europe adopted the SI system in 1960 so as to make the trading between European nations easier after World War II, whereas US was isolated from them and didn't have to depend on the European countries. There was a debate in the US to go into metrics in the 70s but the manufacturers were comfortable having their own system and with the advent of HP calculator conversion was easy. So they didn't force much to convert to metric system. It will be the same now, with the presence of Google, you can convert units very quickly, and I use it sometimes. Here is a sample calculation in Google.

SI system offers a lot of convenience, it provides a single unit for any physical quantity, thus eliminating the need for conversion factors and making calculation easy and direct. Another advantage of the unified metric system is the fact that multiples and submultiples are related to the fundamental unit by factors of powers of ten, so that one can convert by simply moving the decimal place: 1.234 meters is 1234 millimeters, 0.001234 kilometers etc. We can't do the same in English system of units used in the US (e.g. 1 lbs = 16 ounces)

Converting the units from the English system to SI units is a laborious process and most often end up with errors. I was preparing a report for the Aircraft manufacturer and they wanted SI and it took me many hours to convert all the units correctly.

The article gives a few examples to convert the units to illustrate the unit conversion problem.

What is the mileage of a car that uses 8.7 liters of fuel per one hundred kilometers? What is a pressure value of 174 pounds per square inch transformed to kilograms per square meter? How much is a density of 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter transformed to pounds per cubic foot?

If we have one system of units, it will make easy to do trade worldwide and also communicate properly the various properties of products. There is another problem besides this system of units confusion, the electricity system used by different countries, if they use one system, then selling and using different electronics products will become easier.

Would you like to have one system of units or you like the way it is now?

Summer Program for Pre-Kindergarten

My friend's son is going to be enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten coming fall. She is planning to enroll her son in the summer program so it will help him to do well in Pre-Kindergarten. According to a study, students lose an average of one month of learning over the summer break. But joining in programs like SCORE! Summer Program will help the kid learn the basics, so he or she will be better prepared when they join school. That is where Summer Camps offered by SCORE! Program comes in to assist children. SCORE! is part of the famous Kaplan program and offers a fun way for children to keep up and get ahead in their studies.

There is a SCORE! 30 Program which offers 30 one hour sessions to assist children throughout the summer and offer personal tutoring program catered to each student. It will be a big boost for children who are enrolling in schools for the first time or even to improve their education skills in higher grades. We live in Raleigh, we don’t have similar programs, but I hope SCORE! centers will be started here soon, it will help many children like my friend’s son. For additional information about SCORE! contact here.

Rate Local Businesses in Google Maps

Google adds reviews and ratings of local businesses in Google Maps. It is generated by users of Google. Any user can rate coffee shops, doctors, dentists, plumbers, businesses. Is available worldwide.
Now you can add reviews and rate local businesses in Google Maps.

Before we order a service, buy a cup of coffee, we would like to have reviews about them like ratings in Ebay. Finding ratings about coffee shops, plumbers, doctors, dentists is not easy. It is available but scattered at different places and at different sites. Google wants to help us solve the problems by adding reviews in its Google Map. Until today, Google used to get review information from other sites like Yelp, but becoming independent and relying on its own users makes more sense.

This is not only available in the US, but in the world too, so before we travel to another country, it will be nice to get some reviews of local restaurants and hotels. Google Maps will help us in that regard.

Google Blog says about this review:

Tell the world all about your favorite (or least favorite) doctors and dentists, hotels, bakeries, hardware stores, salons, pet spas, auto mechanics, plumbers, and more".

Just visit Google Maps and click any business you like to see, for example if you are going to Orlando, Florida and want to see the best restaurants, click here. Next to every restaurant, you will see star ratings, and when you click the star ratings you will see the comments from other users. From this you can decide whether to go there or not. If you have already visited the business before, then you can write a review. The review must be 100 characters minimum with a short title description. This review will go instantly and will be added to other reviews.

Google Maps is a great tool, with more users reviewing the businesses it will offer us a great way of knowing about the quality of the business.

10 Reasons To Drink More Water

Ririan Project gives 10 reasons why drinking water is safe and healthy. Water helps provide a healthy skin, reduces toxins, reduces risk of heart attacks, gives more energy and helps stay alert and many more.
We have heard it several times, drink more water, but we ignore it and always drink it as a last resort. Drinking water is healthy; it serves a variety of purposes. Ririan Project gives 10 reasons why drinking water is safe and healthy.

Here they are:

Get Healthy Skin: Water is the single most important element for cellular integrity. Instead of using creams and moisturizers, water does most of the job and effectively naturally. It moisturizes the skin inside out. Water also helps prevent dryness.

Flush Toxins: Water helps remove toxins from the body, in particular from the digestive tract. Our kidney system does this job effectively in the presence of water; if water is absent it doesn’t do the job. Water helps get rid of excess nitrogen, urea and ketones. You need more water if you want the kidney to do an efficient job.

Reduce Your Risk Of Heart Attack: Researchers at Loma Linda University in California studied more than 20,000 healthy men and women and have found out that people have less heart problems when they drink a minimum of five glasses of water per day compared to those who drink less than two glasses a day. It is a natural stress reducer, no pills necessary.

Cushion and Lube Your Joints and Muscles: If you do exercises frequently you will know this, drinking less water creates cramps in the body. Water helps lubricate and cushion the joints and muscles. Drink water before, during and after exercise and keep your body hydrated, reduces cramps and fatigue.

Get energized and Be Alert: Researchers have found, that adults lose about 10 cups of fluid a day through sweating, exhaling, urinating and bowel movements. The levels of oxygen in the bloodstream are greater when the body is well hydrated. The more the oxygen in the body, it will help burn fat, without it the stored fat is underutilized and will have less energy. Human brain has 85% water, the more water present it thinks clearly. Now the schools are making the kids either keep bottled water or make them drink water to think better. So, keep the body hydrated to eliminate these problems, will boost energy, and feel less grumpy and alert.

Stay Regular: Water helps digestion; it encourages bowel movement and softens the stools. Water is essential for proper digestion, nutrient absorption and chemical reactions. The carbohydrates and proteins that our bodies use as food are metabolized and transported by water in the bloodstream. Water also helps to transport waste particles.

Reduce Your Risk of Disease and Infection: Failure to drink enough water leads to Chronic Cellular Dehydration. The body cells weaken when they are not hydrated and will be vulnerable to attack from many diseases. These cells will try to draw water from other places like heart, which will then have to work harder to pump blood causing additional problems.

Regulate Your Body Temperature: Water regulates the body’s cooling system. Sports drinks are useful when consumed after or during vigorous and prolonged exercise in high heat. But most experts agree that water works better than carbohydrates or sugared beverages for moderate exercise. Body absorbs water much better than sugar based beverages.

Burn More Fat and Build More Muscle: It has been shown that dehydration decreases protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is what builds muscle. It is an energy costly process. When there is less water protein synthesis is less, fewer calories end up building proteins and more calories end up adding fat. With water the fats get burned and converted to energy, in its absence the fat content increases. Drinking more water reduces fat.

Get Well: When you are sick many recommend drink fluids, water helps the same, it can help control a fever, replace lost fluids and thin out mucus.

Water plays a vital role in every body function; lack of water causes a variety of problems as seen above. Keep drinking water regularly through out the day. Even drinking a little before the meal, will make you eat less and help digestion.

Google's Solar Trees Due To Bloom This Spring

Google Installs Solar trees in Parking Lots, not only produces electricity also provides shelter against rain and the Sun.
Yes, that's right, groves of pole-mounted solar panels, so-called "solar trees" are the newest addition to Google's ambitious solar project for their Mountain View, California, headquarters. Estimated to feed about 30 percent of the complex's entire power demand, one third of the 9,000 solar panels in the system will take the form of solar trees that will line the parking lots.

These Solar trees imitate natural trees, provide shelter from the rain and sun. Also, they found a rare use of the parking lots, besides car parking they are installing these trees for electricity generation. The article says that it is easy to install these trees and costs less compared to mounting on roof tops and maintenance. Soon they are planning to extend this concept to smaller buildings and homes. You can read more about the ambitious Google renewable energy project here.

It's easy being green: Google goes solar

Solar Installation in Googleplex, Google's Office

Google completes the largest commercial solar installation in the US, a 1.6MW solar power generating plant.
This is a follow up to the article, Google's Solar Trees Due To Bloom This Spring where Google was using Solar Panels in the parking lot that also gave shade to the parked cars. Besides this, Google had an ambitious plan to have Solar panels installed on its buildings roofs. And Google has finished that ambitious project, the largest one owned by a business.

Google's commitment to "green" means that the company sources carpet and sofas made without PVC, paints without volatile organic compounds, and cafeteria food from local growers. It's not surprising, then, that they would roll out the largest commercial solar deployment in the US, a 1.6MW installation that covers most of the buildings at Google's campus and extends even to shaded parking spaces. At the ETech conference in San Diego this week, Google's Anthony Ravitz explained how Google did it, and why.

Ravitz said that this is a huge investment for Google, and will earn its investment back in 7.5 years. After which they will continue to enjoy inexpensive power for decades. Googleplex as Google calls its big complex of offices, has plenty of roof space available so it installed Solar panels on them. And use of this Solar energy is helpful during the afternoons when the Power is expensive and Solar energy generation is also at its peak so Google can use it to save costs. Ravitz didn't give the exact figures of the costs but said it received lot of subsidies from the Government and local utility company PG&E.

9,212 Sharp photovoltaic modules now cover the rooftops of the Googleplex, each one capable of pumping out 208W of DC power in full sun.To gain even more solar surface area, Google installed solar panels as "shades" over several of its parking lots, keeping cars cool and generating power at the same time.

This Solar installation can generate up to 30 percent of Google's peak demand power or can light about 1,000 California homes. The solar modules are wired in series, 14 to each circuit, and their output is sent to 10 SatCon inverters. The inverters transform the DC power to utility grade AC. These inverters are tied to both the Google's own power systems and the general electrical grid. The system is set up for net metering, when the Solar energy created in Google is in excess, it is pumped back to the State Grid and Google will receive a credit for the power and can be used against the electricity it will get from the general electrical grid later.

Ravitz said Google is pleased to do this to minimize the effect of business on the environment. Ravitz hopes other firms will follow Google's example and explore alternative energy sources.

Google will be doing this more on its other locations.

Google Solar Panels Produced 9,810 Kilowatt-hours of Electricity in 24 Hours

Googleplex Solar Arrays.

Google produced 9,810 kilowatt hours of electricity in the last 24 hours from the solar panels installed in its Googleplex. It can power more than 1,000 homes or power 30 per cent of its peak power use in Googleplex.
In October 2006, Google announced a commitment to solar energy production and launched the largest solar panel installation to date on a corporate campus in the United States.

Google installed solar panels throughout Googleplex and also installed solar panels in parking lots. It has installed over 90% of the 9,212 planned solar panels that comprise the 1,600 kilowatt project. The solar panels cover the rooftops of eight buildings and two newly constructed solar carports at the Googleplex.

The installation is projected to produce enough electricity for approximately 1,000 homes or 30 per cent of Google’s peak electricity demand in Googleplex.

The above link gives the daily production of solar power from their rooftops. The power generated today 9,810 kilowatt-hours is equivalent to...

NBC Streamed Nearly 333 Million Videos Online

NBC.com adds more than 333 million video streams into its online site. Now you can watch entire episodes of your favorite NBC show online at any time. Many shows like My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, Heroes, Studio 60 and Passions are available.
NBC.com has streamed about 333 million video streams since it launched its full episode video player.

With the huge success YouTube, it just made sense to major broadcasting networks like NBC to start putting their TV shows online for later viewing and offer convenience to the fans to watch it at any time. They should have done this long time ago in fact should have led the way themselves first in this online video category. But better late than never, that is what NBC did by offering more than 333 million video streams of its TV shows at its site. Mashable.com says it’s also proven a great way to spread the word on new or upcoming shows, and allow shows that may not have fared well on television to gain traction with an online following.

Instead of allowing YouTube to control their media, NBC wants to do it themselves. The video streams contain two minute replays, deleted scenes, webisodes, exclusive series and full episodes.

The traditional media company has also made several concerted efforts to ingrain itself in online social networking culture, including its concerts on Second Life, the launching of MyNBC, and its partnership with Clearspring for widget offerings.

I checked this NBC.com channel, the quality of videos are good, but they split the episode into six parts and each part has an ad at the beginning. So you have to click a number of times to watch the whole episode. No embed links are provided, so you are restricted to watch at NBC.com only.

NBC should just give the videos to YouTube or Joost and manage through them. People will get tired watching it at NBC.com, but if you are patient would like to watch entire episode, then you can visit NBC.com. Many shows like Heroes, My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, Studio 60 is available, but “The Office”, Saturday Night Live shows are not available.

33 Ways to Watch Free TV Online

It’s time to toss the old tube to the dumpster. Well, not if you have one of those 47” plasma ones, but…you know what we mean. The future of media is the Internet, and television is no exception. Instead of browsing through the channels with your remote, you could be browsing through the free online TV providers on your computer - hell, if you like, you can watch them all at once (in really tiny windows). It’s time to reach out and see how much free online TV we can find.

YouTube

Well, duh. We had to start with the big one. Not much to say here except: user uploaded videos, lots and lots of them, all free. Yeah, and lawsuits, too.

Joost

Another much-hyped favorite from the authors of Skype is still in beta stage, but i actually delivers on all fronts: P2P system for delivering content; solid amounts of good content, great GUI, almost glitch-free work, quality video. If you can snag an invite, you’ll be in for a treat.

Babelgum

Babelgum

Babelgum is similar to Joost in two ways: P2P-based content delivery, and free but ad-supported content. The service is in open beta, and everyone is free to try it out, although the amount of daily downloads is limited. Channels include news, music, documentaries, sports, animation, and others. The content plays smoothly, and the interface is great, although not as polished as Joost’s. Hint: don’t give up if the video doesn’t start immediately; it takes some time to buffer it and there’s no visible indication that it’s happening.

Zattoo

A p2p-based online television with a downloadable client focused on European (over 50) channels. Unfortunately, it won’t work if you’re not from one of the supported countries.

Veoh

Veoh has a slightly different concept than other services on this list. Their downloadable player acts like a VCR: you can save movies to it for later viewing. Although it’s possible to watch videos online on the Flash version of the Veoh player, the focus is on offline (or at least desktop) viewing, and videos longer than 45 minutes can be viewed only on the desktop player. Available videos include both user generated content as well as professionally produced, sometimes copyrighted stuff.

NGTV

NGTV, which is short for No Good TV, is the television you don’t want your daughter to watch. Or at least it tries to leave that impression: in reality, it’s similar to what kids see on TV everyday: lots of music & entertainment, lots of foul language, and long, long intros for every episode.

Democracy

Democracy

Democracy is actually a media player which you can use to watch media files on your hard drive. But, the difference is in that it also lets you connect to all of the big video hosting sites and many independent publishers. Finally, it’s a media organizer, which lets you bundle all that offline and online videos into one neat collection. The result is a great online video experience that’s not quite as effortless as Joost, but it sure beats visiting all those video sites and podcasts and looking for stuff by hand.

EpisodeNetwork

Episode network is a large link list, pointing to videos around the web. They’re not hosting any of the videos on the site; but bear in mind that since the material includes blockbusters and entire TV series downloading the stuff might be just a tad illegal.

Dailymotion

One of the biggest video sharing sites around, Dailymotion is as old as YouTube, and nearly as successful. Unlike YouTube, it’s still not sued by every media powerhouse under the sun, so you can still find a lot of good stuff there. For a list of TV series available at Dailymotion, check out this site.

Google Video

Although Google has bought YouTube and Google Video is slowly fading out of the picture, it’s still a very large video sharing site with tons of content and an UI that wouldn’t mind a makeover.

BlinkX

BlinkX

BlinkX is a video/audio search engine which claims to have indexed over 12 million hours of video. Since it’s a search engine, you’re hardly gonna be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the shows, but it’s great for finding that elusive video you think you saw three weeks ago but you were too drunk to remember what’s it’s called or what’s it about.

ChannelChooser

A windows media player based video portal offering a large selection of TV channels. Simple layout and interface, very little annoyance.

Freetube

Freetube is one of those sites that keep it simple: no downloads, no subscriptions: only lots of neatly categorized shows. It didn’t work all that well for me, but some users say that it’s their favorite service, so try it out.

Televee

A shoddy and confusing (actually, largely nonexistant) interface on this one ruins much of the fun, but if you manage to find them, there are some good shows here (watching Prison Break as I write this).

Guba

Guba

Guba is a combination of video sharing and video rental, which means you’ll have to pay for some of the content. Nevertheless, there’s a lot of good stuff to be found in the free part of the site. GUBA enables download of the videos to your PC, iPod, PSP, and other portable devices. The site is also unique for the fact that it finds content on USENET groups.

WWITV

A directory of links to TV streams, organized by country. You might get a bit frustrated using it because many of those streams don’t work, and they come in a variety of formats. The directory itself is quite comprehensive, covering most of the world’s countries with at least one channel.

Blip.TV

Blip.TV is a video sharing site that focuses on user-crated shows. This means less noise and more coherence than YouTube, and some of the stuff on here is, indeed, quite enjoyable. A great place to find the next Spielberg, or at the very least the next Larry Clark.

ChannelKing

Another list of streams with an insultingly tiny Windows Media Player to watch the content in. Use only if desperate.

Stage6

Stage6

Stage6 is a video sharing site built to demonstrate the quality of the DivX codec. It sports a sleek interface and a large selection of videos. You’ll need a special plugin to access the videos - the DivX web player - but the quality of DivX-encoded videos makes it worth your while.

TVUnetworks

TCUnetworks is a China-based P2P TV company, which means you’re mostly be able to find Chinese channels there, but some of the content is in English, too.

Don’t Watch Me

A very rudimentary list of links to various video content.

Tape It Off The Internet

Tape If Off The Internet, or shorter TIOTI, is a service for tracking your favorite TV shows. The service has been around for a long time - since 2005 - and it’s still in beta, which is not a good sign. Read our initial coverage here.

Streamick

While the page itself is just a (quite ugly, we might add) collection of links to various streams, there is some good content to be found here.

TV Links

TV links

TV Links is another one of those which fall under the “can this possibly be legal?” category. It’s a nicely organized collection of links to episodes to popular TV shows. Enjoy it while it lasts.

ABC

A selection of ABC shows, will work only for visitors from the United States.

Free Movies Cinema

A carefully handpicked selection of rare and interesting movies collected from various online sources. It’s a small but intelligent selection, and most movies on the list are definitely worth watching.

PeekVid

A selection of downloadable TV shows and movies, including some very popular ones like Buffy, 24, Pimp My Ride and others. Also includes a quite comprehensive selection of anime.

Fox MySpace

On its MySpace page, Fox is offering several of its popular TV shows for free - if you’re located in the United States. Some love for the Europeans, please?

TV Video

TV video

A nicely organized list of episodes from the most popular current shows, like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and 24. Is it legal? We don’t know, but it’s there. Make sure to expand that tiny video player to (almost) fullscreen size.

Choose and watch

Another one of those long lists of categorized streaming content that opens in a Windows Media Player. They index over 300 channels, and, as they say, some of them have to be good.

Streaming TV Episodes

ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX free TV episodes in one place. It’s not much, but it’ll save you some time.

Your TV Links

An ugly, but quite comprehensive list of TV shows, cartoons, anime, music and commercials.

ITV

ITV is the biggest commercial television network in the UK, and you can watch some of their content for free on their website. Unfortunately, it’s nothing like the real thing; instead of full episodes and shows, expect highlights, trailers and short clips.

Business Meetings and Other Chores

If you have a medium or large size company, tracking of employees and the equipments they use is not an easy task. Apple announces iPhone now delivers up to 8 hours of talk time, new glass display

In a press release Apple announces significant upgrades to iPhone's battery life and a new optical glass touch screen. The new figures indicate iPhone users can use up to 8 hours talk time, 6 hours internet use and 7 hours video playback before recharging
In a press release today, Apple has revealed a number of significant upgrades to both the iPhone's battery life and touch screen.

Apple iPhone will be released on June 29. Earlier Apple announced that the iPhone will have 5 hours of video/talk and 16 hours of audio playback time before recharging the batteries. Now Apple has updated the iPhone’s battery life with high figures: up to 8 hours talk time, 6 hours of internet use, 7 hours of video playback and 24 hours of audio playback and 250 hours of standby. I think Apple gave a conservative estimate before, Apple always under report it so they won’t have any problems in the future. These figures might vary based on normal use, but would still fall under this estimate.

These figures are very impressive compared to other smart phones. Here is a comparative chart for various phones:

From the above data, we can see the impressive advantages for the iPhone compared to other phones especially in the thickness, battery, and screen size categories.

One major change they have made is they have change the specification of the original 3.5” plastic surface of the iPhone to “Optical-quality” glass. TUAW.com says this new surface might increase the durability of the phone’s primary feature and user interface.

Also, it has mentioned the pricing or the iPhones, $499 and $599 for 4GB and 8GB respectively, but no contract details are provided, implying Apple may not force all customers to switch to two year contracts.

Great news, I don’t know how Apple is able to do this battery upgrade so quickly amidst all this; one reason might be the tweaking of the software inside.

NEW Song from Connie! - Britains Got Talent Semi-finals

Six year old Connie Talbot is through to the finals with another great performance singing "Ben", a Michael Jackson's song. One of the judges says she is "pound to pound" the best six year old singer in the world.
Latest from Six year old Connie Talbot performing in the semi-finals singing 'Ben'.
Connie Talbot, so young that her front teeth haven't even grown through yet, impressed the judges with her voice as she sang her way through the Michael Jackson track Ben.

Just like her previous song, she nailed this one as well, just a breathtaking performance and that too a natural one at that.

After she finished the song, the judges gave her high marks and I am sure she will breeze through final. Haven’t watched the others, but this one seems to be great.

Judge Piers Morgan described her performance as “amazing” and told her that she is not only becoming famous in Britain but throughout the world as well via the web. He said she is “pound for pound, inch for inch” the best six year old singer in the world.

Simon Cowell, the critic among the judges started off saying he “didn’t like the song” but after the crowd booed he said “I loved it”. He also said she not only sings the words but feels the music and acts like the song and natural at it.

She moves forward to the final with the Bar Wizards, pera-singing Paul Potts, ventriloquist Damon Scott, breakdancing group Kombat Breakers and all-singing all-dancing 11-year-old Bessie Curzons.

Mrs. Talbot, 38, her mother, not in this video said Connie never stops singing whether she is at home or away from school, so she decided to encourage her. She is very happy that she is doing great and it would be wonderful if she wins it.

Connie has not told this to her class mates, they will be surprised as much as her and will be giving a warm welcome when she gets back to school. Her life has turned upside down. Glad to see such talent blooming so quickly.

Britain's Got Talent: This Girl is Awesome

Watch an incredible performance from six year old Connie in "Britain's Got Talent" show in UK. She vows her judges and the audience with an incredible voice and song "Over the Rainbow".

We saw a riveting performance by Paul Potts earlier and now listen to Conny, 6 year old girl sing 'Over The Rainbow' in "Britain's Got Talent" show hosted by Simon Cowell and other judges. She amazes her judges with an incredible voice. Amanda, the other judge cries as she hears Connie sing. The whole crowd enjoys her singing and so will we. One of the best performances you will see from a 6 year old. Even Simon Cowell is impressed and says she is absolutely fantastic. I have never seen him this mellow two shows in a row. Conny is simply amazing and she has a bright future.

Lyrics for the song "Over The Rainbow"
(Arlen-Harburg)

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true

Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemondrops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemondrops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Twenty Things You Should Know About Corporate Crime

The following is text from a speech delivered by Russell Mokhiber, editor of Corporate Crime Reporter to the Taming the Giant Corporation conference in Washington, D.C., June 9, 2007.

20. Corporate crime inflicts far more damage on society than all street crime combined.

Whether in bodies or injuries or dollars lost, corporate crime and violence wins by a landslide.

The FBI estimates, for example, that burglary and robbery -- street crimes -- costs the nation $3.8 billion a year.

The losses from a handful of major corporate frauds -- Tyco, Adelphia, Worldcom, Enron -- swamp the losses from all street robberies and burglaries combined.

Health care fraud alone costs Americans $100 billion to $400 billion a year.

The savings and loan fraud -- which former Attorney General Dick Thornburgh called "the biggest white collar swindle in history" -- cost us anywhere from $300 billion to $500 billion.

And then you have your lesser frauds: auto repair fraud, $40 billion a year, securities fraud, $15 billion a year -- and on down the list.

19. Corporate crime is often violent crime.

Recite this list of corporate frauds and people will immediately say to you: but you can’t compare street crime and corporate crime -- corporate crime is not violent crime.

Not true.

Corporate crime is often violent crime.

The FBI estimates that, 16,000 Americans are murdered every year.

Compare this to the 56,000 Americans who die every year on the job or from occupational diseases such as black lung and asbestosis and the tens of thousands of other Americans who fall victim to the silent violence of pollution, contaminated foods, hazardous consumer products, and hospital malpractice.

These deaths are often the result of criminal recklessness. Yet, they are rarely prosecuted as homicides or as criminal violations of federal laws.

18. Corporate criminals are the only criminal class in the United States that have the power to define the laws under which they live.

The mafia, no.

The gangstas, no.

The street thugs, no.

But the corporate criminal lobby, yes. They have marinated Washington -- from the White House to the Congress to K Street -- with their largesse. And out the other end come the laws they can live with. They still violate their own rules with impunity. But they make sure the laws are kept within reasonable bounds.

Exhibit A -- the automobile industry.

Over the past 30 years, the industry has worked its will on Congress to block legislation that would impose criminal sanctions on knowing and willful violations of the federal auto safety laws. Today, with very narrow exceptions, if an auto company is caught violating the law, only a civil fine is imposed.

17. Corporate crime is underprosecuted by a factor of say -- 100. And the flip side of that -- corporate crime prosecutors are underfunded by a factor of say -- 100.

Big companies that are criminally prosecuted represent only the tip of a very large iceberg of corporate wrongdoing.

For every company convicted of health care fraud, there are hundreds of others who get away with ripping off Medicare and Medicaid, or face only mild slap-on-the-wrist fines and civil penalties when caught.

For every company convicted of polluting the nation’s waterways, there are many others who are not prosecuted because their corporate defense lawyers are able to offer up a low-level employee to go to jail in exchange for a promise from prosecutors not to touch the company or high-level executives.

For every corporation convicted of bribery or of giving money directly to a public official in violation of federal law, there are thousands who give money legally through political action committees to candidates and political parties. They profit from a system that effectively has legalized bribery.

For every corporation convicted of selling illegal pesticides, there are hundreds more who are not prosecuted because their lobbyists have worked their way in Washington to ensure that dangerous pesticides remain legal.

For every corporation convicted of reckless homicide in the death of a worker, there are hundreds of others that don’t even get investigated for reckless homicide when a worker is killed on the job. Only a few district attorneys across the country have historically investigated workplace deaths as homicides.

White collar crime defense attorneys regularly admit that if more prosecutors had more resources, the number of corporate crime prosecutions would increase dramatically. A large number of serious corporate and white collar crime cases are now left on the table for lack of resources.

16. Beware of consumer groups or other public interest groups who make nice with corporations.

There are now probably more fake public interest groups than actual ones in America today. And many formerly legitimate public interest groups have been taken over or compromised by big corporations. Our favorite example is the National Consumer League. It’s the oldest consumer group in the country. It was created to eradicate child labor.

But in the last ten years or so, it has been taken over by large corporations. It now gets the majority of its budget from big corporations such as Pfizer, Bank of America, Pharmacia & Upjohn, Kaiser Permanente, Wyeth-Ayerst, and Verizon.

15. It used to be when a corporation committed a crime, they pled guilty to a crime.

So, for example, so many large corporations were pleading guilty to crimes in the 1990s, that in 2000, we put out a report titled The Top 100 Corporate Criminals of the 1990s. We went back through all of the Corporate Crime Reporters for that decade, pulled out all of the big corporations that had been convicted, ranked the corporate criminals by the amount of their criminal fines, and cut it off at 100.

So, you have your Fortune 500, your Forbes 400, and your Corporate Crime Reporter 100.

14. Now, corporate criminals don’t have to worry about pleading guilty to crimes.

Three new loopholes have developed over the past five years -- the deferred prosecution agreement, the non prosecution agreement, and pleading guilty a closet entity or a defunct entity that has nothing to lose.

13. Corporations love deferred prosecution agreements.

In the 1990s, if prosecutors had evidence of a crime, they would bring a criminal charge against the corporation and sometimes against the individual executives. And the company would end up pleading guilty.

Then, about three years ago, the Justice Department said -- hey, there is this thing called a deferred prosecution agreement.

We can bring a criminal charge against the company. And we will tell the company -- if you are a good company and do not violate the law for the next two years, we will drop the charges. No harm, no foul. This is called a deferred prosecution agreement.

And most major corporate crime prosecutions are brought this way now. The company pays a fine. The company is charged with a crime. But there is no conviction. And after two or three years, depending on the term of the agreement, the charges are dropped.

12. Corporations love non prosecution agreements even more.

One Friday evening last July, I was sitting my office in the National Press Building. And into my e-mail box came a press release from the Justice Department.

The press release announced that Boeing will pay a $50 million criminal penalty and $615 million in civil penalties to resolve federal claims relating to the company’s hiring of the former Air Force acquisitions chief Darleen A. Druyun, by its then CFO, Michael Sears -- and stealing sensitive procurement information.

So, the company pays a criminal penalty. And I figure, okay if they paid a criminal penalty, they must have pled guilty.

No, they did not plead guilty.

Okay, they must have been charged with a crime and had the prosecution deferred.

No, they were not charged with a crime and did not have the prosecution deferred.

About a week later, after pounding the Justice Department for an answer as to what happened to Boeing, they sent over something called a non prosecution agreement.

That is where the Justice Department says -- we’re going to fine you criminally, but hey, we don’t want to cost you any government business, so sign this agreement. It says we won’t prosecute you if you pay the fine and change your ways.

Corporate criminals love non prosecution agreements. No criminal charge. No criminal record. No guilty plea. Just pay the fine and leave.

11. In health fraud cases, find an empty closet or defunct entity to plead guilty.

The government has a mandatory exclusion rule for health care corporations that are convicted of ripping off Medicare.

Such an exclusion is the equivalent of the death penalty. If a major drug company can’t do business with Medicare, it loses a big chunk of its business. There have been many criminal prosecutions of major health care corporations for ripping off Medicare. And many of these companies have pled guilty. But not one major health care company has been excluded from Medicare.

Why not?

Because when you read in the newspaper that a major health care company pled guilty, it’s not the parent company that pleads guilty. The prosecutor will allow a unit of the corporation that has no assets -- or even a defunct entity -- to plead guilty. And therefore that unit will be excluded from Medicare -- which doesn’t bother the parent corporation, because the unit had no business with Medicare to begin with.

Earlier, Dr. Sidney Wolfe was here and talked about the criminal prosecution of Purdue Pharma, the Stamford, Connecticut-based maker of OxyContin.

Dr. Wolfe said that the company pled guilty to pushing OxyContin by making claims that it is less addictive and less subject to abuse than other pain medications and that it continued to do so despite warnings to the contrary from doctors, the media, and members of its own sales force.

Well, Purdue Pharma -- the company that makes and markets the drug -- didn’t plead guilty. A different company -- Purdue Frederick pled guilty. Purdue Pharma actually got a non-prosecution agreement. Purdue Frederick had nothing to lose, so it pled guilty.

10. Corporate criminals don’t like to be put on probation.

Very rarely, a corporation convicted of a crime will be placed on probation. Many years ago, Consolidated Edison in New York was convicted of an environmental crime. A probation official was assigned. Employees would call him with wrongdoing. He would write reports for the judge. The company changed its ways. There was actual change within the corporation.

Corporations hate this. They hate being under the supervision of some public official, like a judge.

We need more corporate probation.

9. Corporate criminals don’t like to be charged with homicide.

Street murders occur every day in America. And they are prosecuted every day in America. Corporate homicides occur every day in America. But they are rarely prosecuted.

The last homicide prosecution brought against a major American corporation was in 1980, when a Republican Indiana prosecutor charged Ford Motor Co. with homicide for the deaths of three teenaged girls who died when their Ford Pinto caught on fire after being rear-ended in northern Indiana.

The prosecutor alleged that Ford knew that it was marketing a defective product, with a gas tank that crushed when rear ended, spilling fuel.

In the Indiana case, the girls were incinerated to death.

But Ford brought in a hot shot criminal defense lawyer who in turn hired the best friend of the judge as local counsel, and who, as a result, secured a not guilty verdict after persuading the judge to keep key evidence out of the jury room.

It’s time to crank up the corporate homicide prosecutions.

8. There are very few career prosecutors of corporate crime.

Patrick Fitzgerald is one that comes to mind. He’s the U.S. Attorney in Chicago. He put away Scooter Libby. And he’s now prosecuting the Canadian media baron Conrad Black.

7. Most corporate crime prosecutors see their jobs as a stepping stone to greater things.

Spitzer and Giuliani prosecuted corporate crime as a way to move up the political ladder. But most young prosecutors prosecute corporate crime to move into the lucrative corporate crime defense bar.

6. Most corporate criminals turn themselves into the authorities.

The vast majority of corporate criminal prosecutions are now driven by the corporations themselves. If they find something wrong, they know they can trust the prosecutor to do the right thing. They will be forced to pay a fine, maybe agree to make some internal changes.

But in this day and age, in all likelihood, they will not be forced to plead guilty.

So, better to be up front with the prosecutor and put the matter behind them. To save the hide of the corporation, they will cooperate with federal prosecutors against individual executives within the company. Individuals will be charged, the corporation will not.

5. The market doesn’t take most modern corporate criminal prosecutions seriously.

Almost universally, when a corporate crime case is settled, the stock of the company involved goes up.

Why? Because a cloud has been cleared and there is no serious consequence to the company. No structural changes in how the company does business. No monitor. No probation. Preserving corporate reputation is the name of the game.

4. The Justice Department needs to start publishing an annual Corporate Crime in the United States report.

Every year, the Justice Department puts out an annual report titled "Crime in the United States."

But by "Crime in the United States," the Justice Department means "street crime in the United States."

In the "Crime in the United States" annual report, you can read about burglary, robbery and theft.

There is little or nothing about price-fixing, corporate fraud, pollution, or public corruption.

A yearly Justice Department report on Corporate Crime in the United States is long overdue.

3. We must start asking -- which side are you on -- with the corporate criminals or against?

Most professionals in Washington work for, are paid by, or are under the control of the corporate crime lobby. Young lawyers come to town, fresh out of law school, 25 years old, and their starting salary is $160,000 a year. And they’re working for the corporate criminals.

Young lawyers graduating from the top law schools have all kinds of excuses for working for the corporate criminals -- huge debt, just going to stay a couple of years for the experience.

But the reality is, they are working for the corporate criminals.

What kind of respect should we give them? Especially since they have many options other than working for the corporate criminals.

Time to dust off that age-old question -- which side are you on? (For young lawyers out there considering other options, check out Alan Morrison’s new book, Beyond the Big Firm: Profiles of Lawyers Who Want Something More.)

2. We need a 911 number for the American people to dial to report corporate crime and violence.

If you want to report street crime and violence, call 911.

But what number do you call if you want to report corporate crime and violence?

We propose 611.

Call 611 to report corporate crime and violence.

We need a national number where people can pick up the phone and report the corporate criminals in our midst.

What triggered this thought?

We attended the press conference at the Justice Department the other day announcing the indictment of Congressman William Jefferson (D-Louisiana).

Jefferson was the first U.S. official charged with violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Federal officials alleged that Jefferson was both on the giving and receiving ends of bribe payments.

On the receiving end, he took $100,000 in cash -- $90,000 of it was stuffed into his freezer in Washington, D.C.

The $90,000 was separated in $10,000 increments, wrapped in aluminum foil, and concealed inside various frozen food containers.

At the press conference announcing the indictment, after various federal officials made their case before the cameras, up to the mike came Joe Persichini, assistant director of the Washington field office of the FBI.

"To the American people, I ask you, take time," Persichini said. "Read this charging document line by line, scheme by scheme, count by count. This case is about greed, power and arrogance."

"Everyone is entitled to honest and ethical public service," Persichini continued. "We as leaders standing here today cannot do it alone. We need the public’s help. The amount of corruption is dependent on what the public with allow.

Again, the amount of corruption is dependent on what the public will allow."

“"f you have knowledge of, if you’ve been confronted with or you are participating, I ask that you contact your local FBI office or you call the Washington Field Office of the FBI at 202.278.2000. Thank you very much."

Shorten the number -- make it 611.

1. And the number one thing you should know about corporate crime?

Everyone is deserving of justice. So, question, debate, strategize, yes.

But if God-forbid you too are victimized by a corporate criminal, you too will demand justice.

We need a more beefed up, more effective justice system to deal with the corporate criminals in our midst.

Now the criminals you read about look trivial, don’t they?

Wrong Number

The guy says, "Who is this?"

"This is the maid.", answered the woman.

"We don't have a maid!"

"I was just hired this morning by the lady of the house."

"Well, this is her husband. Is she there?"

"Ummm...she's upstairs in the bedroom with someone who I just figured was her husband."

The guy is fuming. He says to the maid, "Listen, would you like to make $50,000?"

"What do I have to do?"

"I want you to get my gun from my desk in the den and shoot that witch and the jerk she's with."

The maid puts down the phone. The guy hears footsteps, followed by a couple of gunshots.

The maid comes back to the phone. "What should I do with the bodies?"

"Throw them in the swimming pool!"

"What?! There's no pool here?" Long pause.

"Uh.. is this 832-4821?"

YouTube Mobile Site Launches

Ref: Mashable.com

YouTube launches Mobile site, now users can watch videos directly on their mobile phones that supports streaming video option. Only a portion of YouTube's videos are available for mobile content.
YouTube launched a mobile interface available at m.youtube.com.

This will be great news for those who want to watch videos directly on their phones. To see these videos on mobile phone, the phones should be able to play streaming videos like (RTSP/3GP with H263/AMR). The older phones may not have this technology, like Treo 650 but the newer phones will have this option. I can open this site in my phone but can’t play the videos. Since videos consumes a large data, one should have unlimited data plan with their mobile phone carriers.

The new mobile site has a dark background, so it may not be easy on the eyes.

Phones with 3G support in Europe will be able to play 3GP files of YouTube’s.

Only a small part of YouTube’s videos are available for this mobile site, most of them either popular or recently uploaded. There are also number of categories at the bottom of the page, people, entertainment and "grab bag", favorites and others. You can also search for videos in this site.

If this works with the new iPhone, the users will love it to have another option of watching great videos from YouTube.

YouTube also has added an Adobe remixer so the user can add great songs to their user generated videos.

I think YouTube is the first video site that is making the videos available for mobile phones.

Smokers more likely to get dementia: report

Dr. Kaarin Anstey from the Center for Mental Health Research finds a high connection between smoking and dementia. Smokers carry a high risk of dementia 40 to 80% percent compared to non smokers.
Australian researchers have found a link between smoking and a high risk of dementia.

Dr. Kaarin Anstey from the Center for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University observed this connection between smoking and dementia in more than 13,000 people.

She said the current smokers have an increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline, ranging from 40 to 80 per cent compared to people who never smoked.

Dr. Kaarin said this is the first time such a connection between smoking and dementia has been established. Smoking is not only a risk for things like lung cancer but also a major risk factor for dementia.

A previous article showed how smoking affects sperm and the health of the future child also.

I read this about smoking in P. G. Wodehouse’ “The Heart of a Goof” : Smoking causes dyspepsia, sleeplessness, gnawing of the stomach, headache, weak eyes, red spots on the skin, throat irritation, asthma, bronchitis, heart failure, lung trouble, catarrh, melancholy, neurasthenia, loss of memory, impaired will-power, rheumatism, lumbago, sciatica, neuritis, heartburn, torpid liver, loss of appetite, enervation, lassitude, lack of ambition, and falling out of hair.

I hope the current smokers stop and the future smokers see all these harmful side effects.

Blogger launches sneak peek of new service

Google's Blogger provides a sneak peak of its new service "Blogger in Draft" a beta version of Blogger with newer features. It adds the Video uploader tool to Blogger. The user can add videos, music files directly to blogs in Blogger.
Blogger launched a new service called Blogger in Draft. The new Blogger has added more features to existing Blogger, but they are not available to public yet, but if you want to check their new features, you have to click this link.

It is like a beta version of Blogger. The first new feature they added to the tool is a built in video uploader tool. Before one has to upload it to YouTube, Google Video or any other video site, then they have to get the embed codes to paste it in the blog. But instead of that, the new Blogger in Draft allows the user to download the videos straight to their blogs.

Blogger in Draft's new video-uploader tool lets you upload videos, not just embed them on the page.

With the new video uploader tool seen above, the user can add AVI, MPEG, Quicktime, Windows Media and Real video files with sizes up to 100MB. This new tool then converts the video into an interface like Google’s video player, with Blogger branding.

Google will make these videos available for search in their Google Video, no additional steps are necessary from the user side.

This is just one of the many features you will be seeing in Blogger in Draft. It will be a great and quick way of adding one’s own videos and files and sharing it with friends and readers.

I added this video below with this method.

World's Largest Tidal Turbine To Be Installed, 1.2 MegaWatts

SeaGen Tidal Turbine, Ref: Treehugger.com

Marine Current Turbines plans to install the World's largest SeaGen Tidal Turbine, 1.2 MW capacity in August. This turbine alone will power more than 1000 homes. They are planning to install more turbines and generate 500MW by 2015.
A company called Marine Current Turbines will be installing a 1.2 megawatt tidal turbine off the coast of Northern Ireland in August.

This SeaGen turbine will be the World’s largest tidal current device. With just one turbine alone it will generate electricity for approximately 1,000 homes. The model shown here is a prototype and they have plans to produce more of it on a large scale an install near the coastal area in UK.

These rotors are similar to a ship’s propeller but rotate slowly about 10 to 20 revolutions per minute, which is ten times slower than a ship’s propeller speed.

Since they are installed in the sea, one might feel concerned about its impact on marine creatures; the designers for these turbines say they are safe to operate in the seas. The risk of impact from SeaGen rotor blades is small, because the marine creatures that swim in strong currents tend to be agile, and can avoid slow-moving underwater obstructions.

In the near future, these turbines with a power rating between 750 to 1500 kilowatts will be installed in seas in rows, where the sea currents are strong. It will be similar to the installation of wind turbines in wind farms.

SeaGen Tidal Turbine prototype, Ref: Treehugger.com

Commenting on the future prospects for tidal current energy, Martin Wright, Managing Director of Marine Current Turbines said once the SeaGen is installed and operated successfully in the sea, they will extend it by adding more turbines. They have plans to develop a commercial tidal farm of up to 10MW in UK seas within the next three years. They believe they can extend it up to 500MW by 2015 based on this new SeaGen technology.

As long it doesn’t harm marine life, then they should do this more. Any renewable energy source is good for the Earth and environment. Hope other countries embrace this technology the same.

Video phone for Japan's elderly

Video Phone in Japan connects the elderly to the doctors via broadband.
NTT DoCoMo late Thursday took advantage of its home country's mobile broadband to launch the FOMA video telephone. This device will be of great help to the senior citizens of Japan. The device automatically connects to NTT's FOMA-based cellular Internet to deliver video calls on a 7-inch touchscreen. The same touchscreen is used to dial outside calls also.

The system will help connect the elderly to the doctors and they can give a quick diagnosis from observing the patient. There is a wireless remote that is part of the video phone package, has a red button which can be assigned to an emergency number. As soon as the button is pressed, the video phone dials the emergency number via the NTT's FOMA-based cellular Internet service.

The phone was released today, the price is not listed at the site.

This will be a great tool to monitor the elderly. They can also connect with their families easily via this video phone.

Consistency - We Are Consistently Inconsistent

"We made a miscalculation, but it's consistent with our over-all strategy."
The New Yorker Collection 2003 Robert Weber from cartoonbank.com.
All Rights Reserved.

We want the army to get out of Iraq, but we want the army to fight in Darfur, Sudan. We complain about the high costs of oil, yet we like to drive gas guzzling cars. We are nothing but inconsistent says Seth Godin.
How can someone:

...be opposed to euthanasia but in favor of the death penalty?
...be in favor of the impeachment of Bill Clinton but not of George Bush?
...be worried about global warming but fly in a big private plane?
...be in favor of the impeachment of George Bush but not of Bill Clinton?
...be opposed to amnesty for illegal aliens but in favor of a pardon for Scooter Libby?
...be in favor of military intervention in Darfur but not in Iraq?
...be opposed to big government but want the government to control public speech?
...be in favor of banning medical marijuana but opposed to government regulation of cigarettes?
...be opposed to judicial meddling, except in cases where you disagree with the current laws?

Seth Godin asks these questions and says the answer is easy, because people are not consistent. If you read these questions, we all fit into this category knowingly or unknowingly.

Same thing goes with the food, we skip ice cream and say we are watching our weight, but we add Blue Cheese or Ranch dressing on salads, which has high fat content.

He gives a few other examples:

We don't pay extra for first class, but refuse to give up a seat to get bumped from a flight, even though the reward is a thousand dollars. We curse the spam that clutters our email boxes but turn around and authorize millions of pieces of junk mail to go out to support our new business.

The local hardware stores curses Home Depot or Lowes for selling hardware stuff near his place, but he goes to Wal-Mart buys clothes and other stuff because it is cheaper than the stores near his.

A vegetarian who makes an oath that he will never eat meat, yet wears a leather belt made of an animal.

Everything is a special situation, everything begs for inconsistency. If all we did was market to computers, life would be a lot simpler, but a lot less interesting.

This fits a majority of us, at least we can say we are consistently inconsistent. I asked Seth Godin about this, so there is no cure for the majority of us? He said there is no cure for any of us :).

What do you think?

Who Needs College? The Triumph of Young Web Founders

Most of the top web properties, social networks, media, video, photos sites, are owned by young entrepreneurs. Some of them have dropped out of colleges or skipped the colleges altogether to start their business.
From Tom and his 100+ million friends on MySpace to Kristopher Tate broadcasting daily videos to the Zooomr faithful during the Mark III launch crisis, a side effect of social media has been the rise of the iconic founder. While most of us would be hard pressed to name the CEOs of the world’s biggest companies like Exxon Mobil or AT&T, names like Kevin Rose and Chad Hurley are nearly synonymous with the Web 2.0 companies they founded.

If you look at the success of all web properties, you will see plenty of young entrepreneurs leading most of them. This Web 2.0 has made it easy for many twenty something generation to hit it big quickly. Unlike the industries which need heavy capital investment and customers, starting a successful website has never been easier and has fewer barriers. Here are some of the successful people and how they made it possible.

Center of the Universe:

Tom Anderson, MySpace Co-Founder

Being accessible and putting a face to go along with the product has been a key to success for many of today’s hottest web properties. If you join any social network and if you see the founder as your first friend, you will be overwhelmed, in MySpace that is what you get, co-founder Tom Anderson is everyone’s first friend.
