Armageddon Insurance: Scientist Call for Earth 'Backup' on Moon

Scientists want to build a backup base for Earth in Moon, it will contain a library of human civilization in moon in case there is a cataclysmic disaster on Earth and then be able to reintroduce if there is any wholesale loss on Earth.
Scientists want to save all the human scientific and cultural achievements before they get lost by a man made nuclear disaster, plague, a natural disaster, global warming or an asteroid collision. They want to secure it in a base in Moon.

Jim Burke, a retired long-time NASA expert, currently working at the International Space University in Stasbourg, France, warned if a doomsday asteroid or comet annihilates the Earth, then there will be a wholesale loss of human achievements. Hence, they need to be insured against the loss.

He suggests a lunar biological and historical archive, which will include samples and a record of the scientific and cultural achievements.

This Burke’s idea of a “space-age Noah’s Ark” is also recommended by the Alliance to Rescue Civilization (ARC), which wants to include backups of Earth’s biological heritage and diversity in a manned lunar facility.

Robert Shapiro, ARC co-founder and biochemist at New York University said when there is a global catastrophe, the facilities in the Moon will then be able to reintroduce the lost technology, art, history, crops, livestock or human beings back to Earth.

NASA has plans to have an outpost on the moon by 2024 but it will be more of a research base and not as a backup like ARC’s.

It is a great idea to have a Noah’s Ark like repository in Moon, but it will be a daunting task and will require cooperation and contribution from every country. It won’t be possible with existing lunar and space aspirations of the countries involved, who just want to pursue independently.

Thailand lifts four-month ban on YouTube

Thailand Government announced Friday they will lift a four month ban on YouTube after the latter agreed to remove the offending video. YouTube also agreed not to allow any videos that violate the country’s laws and be offensive to Thai people.
Thailand earlier banned YouTube permanently after it posted a video offending the Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej and refusing it to take it down.

The offending video contained scenes with shoes pointing towards the King’s image, which is considered a taboo in Thailand for disrespecting the royalty. The video also had the Thai National Anthem as the soundtrack which made it more offensive. Thailand Government had initially planned to file a criminal lawsuit against Google, YouTube’s parent, on charges of lese-majeste, or offense against the monarchy, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. But lucky for Google, Thailand decided against it today.

After Google agreed to remove the video (is no longer available in YouTube) and also formed a policy to remove any offensive videos against Thai people, the Government agreed to remove the ban. The Information and Communication Technology Minister Sitthichai Phokai-udom made the announcement but did not elaborate on the decision.

The minister told “The Nation” newspaper that YouTube has created a program in Thailand that will block any sensitive video clips accessed through Thai Internet service providers.

Google has not commented so far on this lifting of the ban in Thailand.

There is no other choice for Google but to follow the local rules and regulations, some may think they yielded or gave up too easily, but any smart business will do that to survive. One has to respect the local culture. Only thing for Thailand it is offensive to post a clip about its King, but is it OK to post an offensive clip of George Bush or Tony Blair? It will be most likely Thailand Government wouldn’t mind watching offensive videos about other countries but definitely not theirs.

Granny, 107, World's Oldest Blogger

Australian granny Olive Riley is 107 years old and is probably the world’s oldest Blogger and also may be the oldest YouTube user. She loves blogging and making friends all over the world.

Mrs. Olive Riley was born in 1899 in Broken Hill, Australia but at that time it was a British Colony ruled by Queen Victoria. She has survived two world wars and the Great Depression, and witnessed the opening of Sydney Harbor Bridge. She has raised three children and worked many odd jobs ranging from egg sorter to a station cook.

She has lot of stories to share and blogging has helped to share her life stories to the world and she loves blogging. Her blog is named “The Life of Riley Blog”, which she calls it as blob not a blog. She has thousands of fans across the world who visit her blog.

Mrs. Riley doesn’t have too much computer experience but she is able to blog with the help of her friend and film maker Mike Rubbo and another man in her nursing home, she is able to post the various interesting stuff about her life.

"I've got no ideas about computers, no idea at all," she said to the news.com.au.

"But Mike and that other man do and I tell them my stories and they put them on the computer.

She says she has a number of stories and adventures to share in her blog. She has three children and several grand children and seven great grandchildren.

The original idea of blogging came via Mike Rubbo who asked her to put her stories in the form of a blog. It seems she liked the idea from the start.

Initially she thought she will have only a few readers, but now she receives messages from thousands of them making her very happy in the process. She said at the news.com article:

"Mike asked me for little things that I remember, and I know that the people will like them because they're not rude or stupid or anything.

"I'm sure they do enjoy them because of the replies I get. I get some real good replies. I've made a lot of friends by doing the blogs - thousands."

Mrs. Riley, who will turn 108 in October, would have to be the world's oldest YouTuber as well.

She is the star of the YouTube film Olive Riley Returns to Broken Hill, which is shown in the video here. Thousands of internet users have clicked on the YouTube site to hear her outback adventures.

Here is her actual blog, “The Life of Riley”.

Who said blogging is boring and dull. Mrs. Riley is a great source of inspiration for all of us. We need more bloggers like her.

Giant Spider Web creates bug buzz in Texas

Near Lake Tawakoni State Park in Texas, a giant spider web blankets a nature trail that engulfs seven larger trees and dozens of bushes. Park Officials wonder whether a single or a community of spiders behind this bizarre phenomena.
Nature lovers walking along a train in Lake Tawakoni State Park will come across a huge spider web that covers almost 200 yards blanketing several trees, bushes even the weedy ground.

Even though it looks ghastly in site, it helps to control the mosquito population at the park. The spider web originally appeared white in color now it has a brownish look because of all the mosquitoes it has trapped. One park official Donna Garde said at times she can hear the screech of millions of mosquitoes caught in those webs.

There has been a big discussion going on the web whether this huge spider web is a community effort or the spiders just spreading the net from one location to another. No one is sure what type of spider builds this web or what caused it to create this huge spider web. The park officials also have found similar phenomena at other parts of the park but smaller in size.

Herbert A. Joe Pase, Texas Forest Service entomologist said this could be a once in a lifetime event and a rare occurrence.

While it is creating a buzz in the web and across the world, one entomologist John Jackman, Texas A&M University, says the spiders always do this. Probably he thinks if left undisturbed Spiders can create a huge web. He said if he can get a sample, he can try to figure out what type of spider is responsible for this giant web.

Garde, the park superintendent after hearing all the controversy about this spider web in the internet, wants them to stop fighting and visit in person to find out the type of spider that is responsible for this web.

The park officials expect this web to last until October 31 after which they expect the spiders to die and the web might come off the trees soon after. Hope the above spider web lasts until Halloween.

Have you seen a giant spider web like that? There are some spider webs in my small garden; I let them grow because they catch the bugs that harm the plants.

Pathologist: Doctor killed Beethoven

A Viennese Pathologist claims that Beethoven was killed inadvertently by the composer’s physician, overdosing him with lead, accelerating his death in the process. Hair analysis shows high lead concentration peaks coinciding with the doctor's treatments
Many researches have done tests to see whether Beethoven died of poisoning, but no one had any irrefutable evidence. But Christian Reiter a Viennese pathologist, looked over autopsy records and hair samples and claims that he has enough evidence to conclude Beethoven died of lead poisoning by his doctor.

Previous studies had found Beethoven suffered from lead poisoning; they detected high toxic levels first in Beethoven’s hair and then two years ago, they found lead traces in bone fragments. These studies seem to conclude that lead poisoning might have contributed to his death at the age of 57. But still lingering doubts remained.

Christian Reiter applied CSI-like techniques to analyze strands of Beethoven’s hair. He published his findings in the Beethoven Journal where he said, during the final months of the Beethoven’s life, there was a high lead concentration in his body every time he was treated by the doctor, Andrew Wawruch, for fluid inside the abdomen. At that time, Beethoven had liver problems and the lethal lead spread quickly into this liver, totally damaging it in the process, and ultimately it killed him.
His death was due to the treatments by Dr. Wawruch," said Reiter, head of the Department of Forensic Medicine at Vienna's Medical University. "Although you cannot blame Dr. Wawruch — how was he to know that Beethoven already had a serious liver ailment?"

There was an autopsy done just after Beethoven’s death on March 26, 1827, where doctors were able to confirm that he had cirrhosis of the liver as well as edemas of the abdomen. Wawruch seeing Beethoven in pain, repeatedly punctured his abdominal cavity and then sealed the wound with a lead laced poultice.

If the lead were applied to a healthy person, Beethoven would have survived, but with a sick liver, the applied lead doses reportedly hastened his death.

Even before the edemas developed, Wawruch noted in his diary that he treated an outbreak of pneumonia months before Beethoven's death with salts containing lead, which aggravated what researchers believe was an existing case of lead poisoning.

Reiter said the repeated doses of lead inside cream that was administered by Wawruch (especially in the last weeks before his death) caused maximum damage to the liver and resulted in a quick end to the composer’s life.

The hair strands showed several peaks where the concentration of lead rose very high on four occasions between Dec. 5, 1826, and Feb. 27, 1827 coinciding with Wawruch’s medical treatment.

Bill Walsh, U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, doesn’t agree with this finding. He led a team of researchers and found high traces of lead in Beethoven’s bone fragments. He said hair analysis results are unpredictable in nature, with so many factors altering it such as shampoos, residues, weathering problems etc. Beethoven had already large amounts of lead poisoning for some time and when the lead cream was applied on top of this, might have resulted in his death.

There are also other theories swirling about Beethoven; some say Beethoven was given a lead laced wine drink before his death, others say he drank water with high concentrations of lead at a spa when he was growing up.

It is difficult to pinpoint the cause and blame it on Dr. Wawruch, as he may have had some part in this unknowingly, but it could also be a result of many other reasons.

Whatever the main cause of Beethoven’s death, his works will live long and won’t be affected much by this controversy.

How Snakes Survive Starvation for 2 Years

University of Arkansas researchers have found snakes survive starvation for up to two years going without food. They find that snakes use novel survival strategies not seen in other vertebrates.
Marshall McCue is a graduate student in biological sciences in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences in University of Arkansas. He has been studying snakes behaviors for the past few years and has published his findings in the “Zoology” journal.

He studied Western timber rattlesnakes and two other snake species and wanted to find how they cope up with long starvation periods. Many other scientists have reported earlier about snakes surviving long periods without any food, but so far no one has explained why until now.

Marshall McCue studied three snake species about 62 snakes, the ball python, the ratsnake, and the western diamondback rattlesnake and observed their responses to prolonged periods without food.

The snakes were not fed for six months simulating actual starvation routines these snakes would undergo in the wild. McCue then took a note of the physiological, compositional and morphological changes in the snakes.

He found that the snakes could lower their standard metabolic rates by as much as 72 percent. This is beside the fact that the snakes have already low energy demands.

Without food, one would expect that the snake would not grow in size, but instead it was observed that they did grow longer.

"To me, this suggests that there must be a strong selective advantage to growing longer," McCue said.

It also means the snakes have become extremely efficient in their ability to use scarce resources.

He compares the snakes to the dynamics of supply and demand economic theory. When the snakes are cut off from food resources, they still have to expend energy. The demand end is met by decreasing the metabolic rate, hence they need little food. While on the supply side, they still have to provide some basic energy needs which comes from the fat stored within the body.

A snake body comprises of water, protein, fats, ash and carbohydrates. When they are facing starvation, they use up the fat stored inside the body. Among the snakes the ratsnakes are less adopted to starvation compared to other snakes because of abundant rodent supplies among its habitat, so they end up breaking down the proteins faster than pythons or rattlesnakes.

Snakes have survived for more than 100 million years, and this low energy demand might be the chief reason for its survival. McCue, in the University of Arkansas website journal, thinks by studying more about the snakes behavior in the environment could be used in conservation strategies to determine the health of snake populations.

If the Scientists study more about snakes in the molecular or genetics level, maybe they can find a solution for obesity.

World's Most Expensive Book: £3 Million

The Dancing with the Bear book is released in UK with an estimated value of 3 million British Pounds Sterling. The target readers for this book are Russian tycoons living in United Kingdom.
Roger Shashoua, a British entrepreneur wrote this book “Dancing with the Bear: An Entrepreneur Goes East” is priced normally at £14 at places like Amazon.co.uk and other book stores. But he is also selling a custom made version of the book with a range of values from £500,000 to £3 million depending on the diamonds encrusted on the cover of the book. The most expensive book carries 600 diamonds designed by cooldiamonds.com.

The book tells the story of how Shashoua made £100m in post-Soviet Russia. He co-founded exhibitions business ITE, which trades now at the London Stock Exchange and has an estimated market value of £500million.

Russian tycoons are the target readers for this custom, made-to-order, diamond-encrusted book. Roger Shashoua expects many of the wealthy Russians who live in the UK will buy this book.

Today's Russia boasts 53 billionaires including Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich. According to Forbes magazine, most of the billionaires made their riches in oil, steel, mining and metals industries.

Shashoua gave the following reason at BBC.co.uk for providing this book:
There is so much money floating around in Russia that it seemed entirely logical to produce a book designed for the Russian market.

"I am just happy that conspicuous displays of consumption can now be associated with writing, rather than fashion accessories.

Mr. Shashoua however doesn’t want his book just for public display; he wants them to read it as well. The original book has a standard white cover, but in order to highlight the diamonds, the expensive book has a black cover.

To know more about this book, click here.

I think the rich Russians might buy this book mainly to show off, as they don’t need any lessons from others on how to become rich. Maybe the less expensive book will be a hit in Russia among teenagers and adults who want to become successful.

The Laundry: Paper Recycling at its Very Best

Bioregional Development Group, a green project company, has started a recycling operation called “The Laundry” in which they take the waste papers from you and give recycled papers instantly for reuse.
Bioregional Development Group’s main intention is to improve the recycling efficiency. Instead of sending waste paper abroad for recycling, they want to do it locally and pass the benefit to the users. In many cases, when papers are sent for recycling abroad, the participant seldom sees the recycled paper or uses them; this laundry effort will help them to utilize the recycled paper.

This is how it is done, participants involved in this project hand over their “dirty laundry” (waste paper) in blue laundry bags, which are picked up and cleaned. After the process is complete the participant receives 100% recycled paper. Thus the waste products are utilized 100% in the form of recycled paper.

The recycling locally also helps to reduce energy consumed in recycling efforts by not sending abroad and doing them locally. According to the Bioregional Development Group, this process results in a whopping 93% reduction in the ecological footprint associated with paper making when compared to virgin pulp.

However, the Bioregional Development Group is not satisfied with the above effort, they want to convert their trucks to utilize 50% biodiesel and invest in carbon offset schemes for remaining emissions. For more information about this project, click here. This is available currently in London.

It is an excellent idea; if they do this in offices here they can save a bunch of money in reducing the new paper costs. They can easily pick up the waste paper from the offices and give them back 100% recycled paper in return. Either that or the recycling paper companies can have similar projects established besides the collection centers they have.

All-in-one Credit Card

Instead of carrying 10s of cards in your wallet, such as credit, debit, store, restaurant, gas cards etc., wouldn’t be nice if one card represents them all? That is where iCache comes in, is an all-in-one card.
Jonathan Ramaci saw how everyone was carrying so many credit cards and sensed an opportunity and created a slim, secure gadget card that could mimic all of the cards. He created a device called iCache via his company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He said consumers have been walking with these cards for the last 40 years with no simplification and ease of use; he wants to change it with iCache.

To use this card, the users should register their card on the company web site and upload all the information to iCache. Whenever they want to use a specific credit card, they can activate the card and press the corresponding card number via the scroll list of cards they entered previously. Once they choose the card, a plastic card pops out with a magnetic stripe, temporarily loaded with the chosen card’s data. After one use, the information on the card disappears. They can reinsert the card into the gadget and use it in the future with a new set of information. It works fine with all credit and debit cards including loyalty cards issued by groceries stores.

It will be initially priced at $99, it is a thin like the Razr cell phone, will go on sale next year. Ramaci hopes to sell 7 million units by the end of 2009. There are other competing products called near field communications (NFC) used by cell phones and chip enabled credit cards, where the users can pay easily with a single swipe. Ramaci anticipates this problem and is planning to sell his technology to be used in mobile phones as well and communicate via NFC technology. So, he can get the same credit card data in mobile phones like the iCache.

Interesting technology will help us carry a minimum of cards in the wallet. If it is safe to use and secure our data even if we lose this iCache then it will become popular in the market.

National Geographic says Redheads set for extinction

Actress Nicole Kidman. Picture ref: News.com.au.

Genetic scientists warn that redheads are a dying breed; soon they will become extinct in the next 100 years. National Geographic magazine reports that less than two per cent of the world’s population has the natural red hair.
There are many famous redheads in history, such as the bard William Shakespeare, Christopher Columbus and the Queen Elizabeth, and the more recent ones Peter Beattie, Nicole Kidman, Prince Harry and Michael Voss. But the future doesn’t look bright for the redheads according to the National Geographic article.

Red hair was created by a genetic mutation in northern Europe some thousands of years ago. The article reports that the gene had the beneficial effect of increasing the body’s ability to cope with sunlight; it helped make vitamin D from Sunlight. But now because of world wide interactions, the today’s carriers are more prone to skin cancer and are more sensitive to heat and cold related pain.

Because of smaller percentage of redheads present in the population, it has reduced the chances considerably for the redheads to get redhead partner, so their offspring may or may not be a redhead. The redhead can produce a baby from a single redhead parent; the chances become high when both the parents are redhead however.

Some experts warn redheads could be gone as early 2060, but others say the gene can be dormant in the reproductive system for generations before returning.

It is too early to predict redhead extinction, more research and analysis needs to be done if that is the case. For more about red hair check the Wikipedia article.

I think it is time to start “Save the Redheads” campaign. Nicole Kidman could be an ideal choice to head the campaign. Do you have redheads in your family side? Do you see similar patterns?

The Big Mac Sandwich Turns 40

The Big Mac sandwich from McDonald’s turns 40; it was first introduced in 1967 by Jim Delligatti, a McDonald’s Franchise owner in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. It is a popular sandwich worldwide.
Big Mac, the triple decker burger sandwich, ushered a new era in America, super size culture and jumbo meals. The Big Mac first introduced in 1967 by Jim Delligatti, a McDonald’s franchise owner, and later adopted by other McDonald’s restaurants, has become a staple food in the menu. It is one of the premier and best selling item in McDonald’s, sells about 550 Million Big Macs a year in the US alone and is also popular worldwide. However, health wise it gives a different picture, it weighs nearly a half pound, 540 calories and 29 grams of fat each.

To celebrate this anniversary, Mr. Delligatti, 89, and his family opened a Big Mac Museum Restaurant this week in North Huntingdon, Pa., has a full range of memorabilia, exhibits and “the world’s largest Big Mac statue”.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Danya Proud said Big Mac is famous in more than 100 countries; it is one of the popular sandwiches in McDonald’s. It has reached an iconic status; Big Mac is one of a kind.

There are many fans for this Big Mac, one of them Andrea Hawkins loves the sandwich so much she has set up a Facebook group for it named “Big Mac-aholics”. She is getting married next month and her friends are planning a cake like tower of McDonald’s hamburgers for her bachelorette party, finishing at the top a Big Mac sandwich.

Rachel Weingarten, a pop culture expert and author, said Big Mac has grown from just another new item to a cultural unifier status, it can be purchased anywhere in the world from Beijing to Brooklyn and everyone can relate to it.

Big Mac will be celebrating more anniversaries in the future because it is one of the big cash cow items for McDonald’s; a majority of their ads portray Big Mac.

Eating Big Mac once in a while is fine, but not on a daily basis.

Do you like Big Macs, do they serve in your country? The best burger sandwiches I have eaten so far is Char broiled beef sandwiches at Chargrill’s, they taste much better and melts in your mouth than Big Mac’s and also healthier.

Using Revolving Doors Saves 74% of Energy compared to Swing Doors

Which is better swing door or a revolving door? The answer is revolving doors, saves more energy than swing doors. The energy saved in revolving door can power 5.1 houses for a year.
In opening a door, an average of eight times amount of air is exchanged when a swing door is opened compared to the amount of air exchanged with a revolving door. As a result either too warmer or colder air enters the building making the air conditioners and heaters work more to bring them back to average temperatures in case of swing doors.

Researchers did a comparative study in MIT to see how much energy is saved using revolving doors compared to swing doors. They estimated that if everyone uses revolving doors at E25 (one of the research buildings in MIT) instead of the swing doors, MIT could save as much as $7,500 in natural gas used to power the building and save nearly 15 tons of CO2 emissions. There are 29 revolving doors in MIT buildings, if all of the students and teachers use the revolving doors, then the energy savings will multiply considerably.

How does using the revolving door save energy?

The air inside the building is conditioned air either hot, moist air is cooled in summer or warm the cold air in the winter. So less the exchange between the inside and the outside, less is the energy used by either the air conditioner during the summer or the heating equipment in the winter.

The figure below illustrates how air is transferred in and out of a building. Cold air is more dense than warm, resulting in a pressure differential (“stack pressure”) that moves conditioned air through open doors and cracks in seals. Wind pressure outside will also cause more air flow inside the building. Wind blowing on the building adds to this pressure differential.

The revolving door has seals that prevents the outside air from coming in, only allows the air trapped inside one of the chambers where the person is. Open door on the other hand allows free flow and more conditioned air escapes and extreme air enters into the conditioned room.

Energy Savings:

Table 1. Potential savings in different revolving-door usage scenarios at E25
Revolving-door usage 50% 75% 100%
Saving of annual energy consumption 14.5% 38.7% 74.0%
# of houses the saved energy can heat in one year 1.0 2.7 5.1
# of years the saved energy can light a 100W bulb 5.8 15.3 29.0
Tons of CO2 prevented 3.0 7.7 14.6

You can see from the above data, more the people use revolving doors, the energy savings increases tremendously. It doesn’t reach the theoretical maximum of 88% because there is some leakage of air in the revolving doors, but still 74% is significant savings.

The energy savings however depend on the weather, there is less savings in the winter compared to summer because heating consumes more energy than cooling the air. Here is a graph plot to show the energy savings of the revolving door over the course of the year.

Next time when we see two doors, revolving and a swing door, we should use revolving door, let us do our part.

In Thailand, vendors pass the deadly puffer fish as salmon, causes 15 deaths and 115 more hospitalized over the last three years. Puffer fish contains a deadly poison tetrodotoxin that can cause violent death when ingested.
Crooked fish vendors in Thailand market have been selling the meat of the cheaper but deadly puffer fish disguised as salmon fish by painting with a color dye. Thailand Government had banned the fish in 2002 because of the toxic nature of the fish, but the puffer fish is still sold in the market in large quantities and in restaurants.

Narin Hiransuthikul from Chulonkorn University Hospital said some of the fish sellers dye the puffer fish and make them look like salmon fish and sell it. He said this has caused more than 15 deaths and left 115 hospitalized.

The ovaries, liver and intestines of the puffer fish contain the deadly tetrodotoxin, and it can produce a quick and violent death according to the FDA.

The same fish is popular in Japan also and considered a delicacy; it is called by the name fugu, where some Japanese taste it for the thrills. It is however prepared by specially trained fugu Chefs, who deliberately leave some tetrodotoxin (caused by the bacteria inside the fish) on the fish to create some tingling taste.

Experts say eating the puffer fish can cause paralysis, asphyxiation, vomiting, heart failure and death.

All is not bad news with puffer fish however, it is used in the drug industry and the poison tetrodotoxin is isolated from the puffer fish and is used as morphine. It has 3,000 times more powerful than the actual morphine. It can ease pain for between eight and twenty one days and is non addictive and has no known side effects.

When you go the local fish market, just make sure they sell or serve salmon fish. When they are cut in half it is very hard to differentiate between the two, hope we are able to identify the unique features in a Salmon. Even the salmon, farm grown are dyed to make it look like they come from Alaska and other regions, so one has to be watchful about the fake stuff.

Microsoft says Your Password Must Be at Least 18,770 Characters

Microsoft says your 17,145 character password is not sufficient; it must be at least 18,770 characters minimum. Plus it cannot repeat any of the previous 30,689 passwords you have set.
Microsoft gives a solution for one of the common error message encountered in Windows 2000 operating system. Many users encounter the following error Message:

Your Password Must Be at Least 18770 Characters and Cannot Repeat Any of Your Previous 30689 Passwords

First of all to set a password with a length of 17,145 characters is ridiculous and then Microsoft suggests that is not enough, it needs a larger password with 18,770 characters. So, everyone has to reset the password and make sure they enter the correct password in both the boxes, the second box for verification purpose. This new change has been introduced in the Microsoft's new patch SP1.

To resolve the above error the user must update to the latest windows patch available at Microsoft. Assuming there are 3,958 characters in a page, it requires only 4.5 pages to have this new password. Thank God the banks don't demand this requirement, by the time we enter the password it will time us out of its site.

This page has been there since January of this year and Microsoft has yet to update it.

Google News Adds YouTube Videos

Google News now shows YouTube videos in its search results page using the Plus Box Technology, with an option for the user to watch the video at the page itself. The videos are sponsored by major TV producers like CBS, National Geographic.
Instead of just seeing the text links of the various sites about a particular news result, Google News shows video content also related to the news. For example if you search for Disney in Google News, it will show the following result, with the YouTube video from CBS one of the video content providers for YouTube.

Click the plus link to watch the news video. You can see similar results in this example Google News page for search term Disney with video embedded in the search page results.

Yahoo News is showing this video component in its news results for some time now with its own Yahoo Videos and 3rd party video footage. It is good for the customers to see a video component of the news in the results.

Now, the major TV producers beside the CBS can partner with Google and let their videos show in the News results.

I think this will be the future trend where the users would prefer video results more than text results.

Google Releases YouTube-Style Embedded Maps

As announced earlier, Google Maps released the feature in the Google Maps, where you can easily embed map codes in blogs, websites. It is as easy as getting codes from YouTube videos.

Google announced last week that it will release a new feature in Google Maps by which the user can get the direction information in the map and embed the codes in blogs, web pages. Today, Google provided this feature to get the codes for the map locations and share it with the users.

Here is how to get these embed codes for maps.

1. Visit Google Maps at http://maps.google.com
2. Get the directions or markers of any particular region, here I chose Manhattan, New York.
3. Click “Link to this Page”
4. It gives two options either to get the link of that particular Google Maps page or copy the HTML embed codes for web pages.

5. Copy the Embed codes and paste it in your web page. To see a larger view of the map, the user can click the link below the video snapshot shown.

This new feature is available in the following countries besides the US: UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia. And available in the following languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Russian, Japanese, Catalan, Basque, Galician, Welsh, Faroese and Chinese (TW).

Very simple to use, this feature will help the user to find directions and addresses very easily than just the address details. This embed map code feature is useful for parties, weddings, arranging meetings, conferences etc. This new feature sets Google Maps apart from its competitors, Mapquest, MSN Maps.

Google Offers Easy Embed Code for Maps

The image “http://www.digitaljournal.com/images/photo/googlemap.png” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Google Maps will launch a new feature that will allow the users to embed map codes like YouTube videos on their sites to share with the public. This embed map code feature is available in Google Australia and will be available in the US in a week’s time
Google Maps allows business to develop their own API by which they can embed Google Maps on their sites. But this usually required registration and a few steps to get the actual code and link to the map. It also required some programming skills to get the embed code.

But with the new embed feature (according to Mashable), it's as easy as copy and paste; just like you are able to share YouTube videos. Once you get the embed codes, and paste it on a site, it will offer an interactive experience to the user and provide a satellite view, regular map view and hybrid view of the location.

Map embedding is ideal for businesses, restaurants, schools and shopping centers. Instead of just giving the address about a company location, a map view will offer a better option to get directions.

This new feature will be launched in Google Maps in a week.

X-Seed 4000 - Tallest Building Planned on Earth

The X-Seed 4000 is a building project developed by Taisei Corporation, when constructed it will become the tallest building on Earth, eight times larger than the current tallest building, Burj Dubai.
The X-Seed 4000 is planned to be built in the near future, and when constructed fully will span 4 kilometers in height (13,123 foot), 6 kilometer wide sea-base and will have 800 floors with a capacity that could accommodate 500,000 to 1,000,000 inhabitants.

It is being designed by Taisei Corporation and will be built on Tokyo, Japan with their main theme for the building is to offer a futuristic environment combining ultra-modern living and interaction with nature.

Burj Dubai currently is the tallest building constructed on Earth with a height of 1,650 feet, but is only one eighth the size of X-Seed (13,123 feet height). The reason it is not constructed yet is because of high projected costs involved.

Unlike conventional skyscrapers, the X-Seed 4000 would be required to actively protect its occupants from considerable air pressure gradations and weather fluctuations along its massive elevation.

The building will most likely be powered by solar power but wind power might also be a possibility. The X-Seed mimics Mount Fuji mountain in its outward appearance but its size is larger than Mount Fuji, which is 3.8 kilometers in height (700 feet shorter than X-Seed 4000). It will likely be built in the sea, because the land cannot hold the massive weight of the building structure. The current estimate to build this structure is between US$300-900 billions.

Will it ever be built? Only time will tell and will depend on the necessity, with exploding populations and limited land spaces available then there will be a need for such structures.

Six Ways to Ruin a Good Night's Sleep

If you are not getting a proper good night sleep, it maybe because of simple mistakes you make are to be blamed such as using gadgets like BlackBerries, iPods, watching Television etc.,
Alex Chediak, President of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, tells us what are the mistakes we make before we go to bed and recommends the following to get a great good night’s sleep.

1. Early Bedtimes: Going to bed early seems to be a good idea, but until the Sun has set and the circadian rhythm, the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle aligns properly with the sunset, it is better to wait. Like sleeping at 8:00 PM may look fine, but the circadian rhythm has not set yet, so it may pose problems later with sleep with waking up at odd times. Dr. Chediak recommends us to wait until we get drowsy to fall asleep and making it a practice to wake up at the same time, so the body goes through a preset routine every day.

2. Bedroom Gadgets: Watching Television, using handhelds like iPod, Blackberry’s, Palm PDA’s etc., are best left alone and not allowed in the bed room. They pose more distraction than help the sleep. Reading a book is a much better alternative.

3. Having a Nightcap or Two: Just because we are having trouble falling asleep, drinking a few beers or wines doesn’t help. Beers makes us drowsy but disrupts the sleep later; we will wake up groggy later and with a hangover that will disrupt sometimes the whole day. Try to avoid beers or bar scene if you really want a good sleep. Even drinking caffeine or tea later during the night will affect sleep, it is best not to drink them in the night.

4. Working Until Bedtime: If you are working in the computers and do the work until you feel sleepy, is not a good idea. It is best to have a relaxed mind before you sleep. Try to have a gap between work and sleep every day and maintain it as a routine.

5. Watching the Clock: Watching the time pass by and worrying about not able to sleep will not help. Dr. Chediak recommends reading a book, or solving a crossword puzzle, once we feel drowsy, then we go to bed and not worry about what the clock shows.

6. Dark Mornings:
Dr. Chediak says Morning routine plays a vital part in our sleep success. We should let the body know when it is time to rise and the best way he says is to expose ourselves to some bright lights and get about 20 minutes of early morning light exposure. Early mornings are also good to do some exercises like walking, meditation etc., it is quiet and peaceful.

It is best to cultivate the above habits in order to get a good sleep in the night and not twist and roll in the bed and feel grumpy the next day.

Also read this article, if you want to get up from bed without a problem and be active from minute one from bed.

Dog faithfully waits for owner's return -- for 11 years

Hachiko, an Akita dog in Japan, sets an example for loyalty by waiting patiently for its master’s return from work in a railway station. It did this routine for 11 years every day.
The Akita breed dog, Hachikō was born or November 10, 1923 and died March 8, 1935. It is known in Japanese as 忠犬 ハチ公 (chūken hachikō, lit. 'faithful dog Hachikō'). It is remembered fondly in Japan for its intense loyalty, waiting for its master for more than 11 years.

In 1924, Hachiko was brought to Tokyo by its master Hidesamuro Ueno, a professor in the agricultural department at the University of Tokyo. When Hachiko’s master went to work, it greeted him off at the front door, and when his master came back from work he usually went to the nearest railway station and waited for him there. It used to do this as a routine every day. However, his master died a year later in May 1925, but Hachiko kept this routine and waited for its master at the station for the next 11 years until its death in 1935.

Others at the station initially thought it was waiting for something else or roaming around but later realized it was waiting for its dead master. So the vendors there used to give some bits of food and water for its unwavering loyalty. But others doubted it and said the dog might have come because of the food the vendors gave for it. If so, then the dog could have come at other times also, but appeared only in the evening time, precisely when the train was due at the station.

One of the professor's students was able to document the reason for the dog coming to the station for its master. And the student returned several times over the years and saw the dog appear precisely when the train was due at the station in the evening. He published this fact in one of the Tokyo’s largest newspaper after which the dog became a national figure and everyone were impressed with the loyalty shown by the dog and used it as an example for their children and students to follow.

The Hachiko Statue

Soon after a well known artist did a sculpture of the dog which was erected at Shibuya Station and Hachikō himself was present at its unveiling. The statue had to be recycled later for World War II. However, they did the sculpture again, and the original artist’s son made the statue of the dog in 1948. This statue has become a popular meeting spot in Japan.

Palm Centro: Palm's next Treo, er, smartphone

Palm is planning to release the next version smartphones called Palm Centro similar to the Palm Treo models but will have a distinct niche on its own not connected to Treo series.
Palm showed off this new Centro Smartphone to a selected few at a Sprint media summit and said it will have the following features:

• Smallest Palm OS Smartphone in the market
• Wants to focus on the younger demographic market, who are new to the Smartphones.
• Will run on EVDO network
• Features a full keyboard and touch screen

Initially this new Centro was supposed to be called a different name Palm Gandalf or a Palm Treo 800 series but it seems Palm has settled for the new name Centro.

Gearlog was able to use one of these Centro phones, said the keyboard was too small or infinitesimal for adults to use it. The Sprint rep told them that it is for Youth market. The price seems to be a great advantage here, only $99 for the Smartphone with Sprint will have exclusive rights to sell this Centro Smartphone for the first 90 days similar to the exclusivity rights for the AT&T for the Apple iPhone.

Palm is also planning to release soon a new Palm desktop based on Palm OS called Foleo.

Everyone is waiting for a good update from Palm especially after the release of Apple iPhone, but if this is all they could come up with, it is disappointing. Many Palm users will defect or switch to iPhones if they don’t come up with a good model soon.

Use your wristwatch as a compass

Wired.com posted a simple method by which we can find the south direction using nothing but an analog watch and the sun. This is a handy method in case one is lost and disoriented.

This is how it is done.

1. Hold a watch on your hand and point the 12 o’clock towards left direction.

2. Move your arm so the hour hand points at the sun.

3. The mid point between the hour hand and the 12 is the south direction.

The image “http://www.wired.com/images/howto/hl_wristwatch.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

This method however will not work in the southern hemisphere, for which you have to change slightly the above method.

In the southern hemisphere do the following:

You would point 12 o'clock at the sun but still split the difference between 12 and the hour hand for north.

If you are in a region where daylight saving time is used, then you should subtract one hour from the hour hand.

Let me know if you have tried this method before.

Australian Fetus Becomes Newest Facebook Star

Ultrasound baby picture

Bubba Waring hasn’t been born yet but already has a Facebook profile set up for its fetus, which its Australian mother, Clair Gillis calls it as “the world’s most famous fetus”.
Claire Gillis and Luke Waring expect their first child in three months, but even before it is born they set up a Facebook profile for it. Initially she wanted to mention about the baby in her page to notify her family and friends to update the status of the baby. But later she decided to create a profile for the fetus itself (Bubba Waring in Facebook) and update the information of it there instead of updating it in her page.

"We have friends and family all over the world, so we're using it for them, to post updates on ultrasounds, scans and what it has been doing all week," she said. "So that's how it started."

After the profile was posted, many came to know about it and hundreds of people have contacted it and want to become its friend.

There are currently 25 people listed as Bubba Waring’s friends, and if they accept the other hundreds of requests, then Bubba will have more friends.

Gillis said since posting the profile she is surprised to see so many requests, e-mails, messages for Bubba Waring. She has set the profile private for now. She is also not sure about the sex of the baby, so she said it will be a surprise to everyone when the baby is born.

She set up a poll on the Facebook page asking the viewers, “Am I a boy or a girl?” Many have answered it will be a boy.

Gillis said after the baby is born she will update the sex, the name and other details.

I thought there was an age limit in Facebook, didn’t realize one can have a profile set up even before they are born. But I hope Facebook excuse this baby’s profile this time and don't remove the profile. I couldn’t find the actual profile of this baby, later I will update it if I find it.

Happy 25th Birthday, Compact Disc!

Philips introduced the first Compact Disc (CD) on August 17, 1982, a copy of ABBA’s The Visitors. CD ushered a new era of digital music. Today it marks the CD’s 25th anniversary.
Sadly we can’t wish the CD a long life, because it is already dead or being replaced with digital mp3 downloads and the ubiquitous iPod or hard drive players. Engadget said the first CD released by Philips was ABBA’s “The Visitors” but the Wikipedia article says different: The first CDs available were 16 Japanese-made titles from CBS/Sony. This event is often seen as the "Big Bang" of the digital audio revolution. Whichever is the first CD, it became an instant hit with everyone clamoring to own CD players and CDs of their favorite artists.

When the first CD was introduced in the market, it marked a big difference in the music quality compared to its predecessors the cassette tape, the LPs. They commanded a high price but sold well making the RIAA super rich and greedy in the form of Digital Rights Management. More than 200 billion music discs have been sold worldwide.

The mp3s are good but they don’t have the same iconic status as the CD maybe because there is no tangible factor we can make with an mp3 song. But there is no turning back for the current music lovers who favor DRM free version mp3 more than anything else. As we say “Happy Birthday, CD” we will soon have to say “R.I.P. CD”, you did well, music will never be the same.

Do you remember the first CD you purchased? I bought a lot of Pink Floyd CD albums beginning with The Wall album. I then bought many bad albums with one great song for a ridiculous $18 to $20 prices.

UC Irvine builds a 200 million pixel TV, measuring 23 by 9 Feet

Stephen Jenks and Joerg Meyer with their 200-million pixel screen. “It’s exciting,” said Meyer, a professor of computer graphics and visualization who helped develop the screen’s software.

University of California researchers have designed the university’s 23 x 9 foot highly interactive parallelized display wall, with a massive 200 million pixels quality. It is the highest resolution video screen built anywhere in the world.
University of California, Irvine researchers developed this HIPerWall not for home use to watch the playoffs or watch Sopranos, but rather to study the human brain, cancer cells and weather maps. They say this is the world’s highest resolution video screen with 200 million pixels compared to the 1 million high quality HD Television (1280 x 720) pixels available in the market. This high resolution will be able to provide more depth in images at least 100 times more than the highest resolution offered by the current high definition television screens.

Stephen F. Jenks, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science in UC Irvine helped design this 23 x 9 Foot, Highly Interactive Parallelized Display Wall (dubbed HIPerWall). It consists of rows of linked monitors, each of which displays a portion of the picture. Jenks said the main purpose is to see a high resolution image of a small micro object like the cancer cells and get a better understanding.

"It's exciting," said Joerg Meyer, a professor of computer graphics and visualization who helped develop the screen's software. "This display has higher resolution than the human retina can see."

The university researchers were sponsored by National Science Foundation with a $300,000 grant. The HIPerWall is currently used to study the individual brain cells of schizophrenics, predict climate change, and study the cancer cells.

The researchers, both professors and students were also able to explore other things such as spotting trapped cars, fallen trees in aerial photographs of the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina.

Here are some pictures of HIPerWall:

For more images which shows its various uses click here.

Jenks said even though it has great use for scientific purposes, it can extended to homes in the future, who can then watch Super Bowl games and other special music and art events. It can be put in Walls like a wall paper at home.

First let us get used to High Definition before we worry about HIPerWall, but till then it will be much sought after in the medical field to get a better understanding of human diseases.

One of World's Mysteries: The Moving Rocks of Death Valley

There is one of the world’s most puzzling mysteries in the middle of California, the moving rocks of Death Valley. These rocks, some of which weigh more than 700 pounds create a strange and mysterious trail in the dry lake in Death Valley.
The moving rocks are found in a dry lake called Racetrack Playa located in the northern part of the Panamint Mountains in Death Valley National Park, California, U.S.A. The moving rocks are also called as “Sailing stones”.

These rocks are seen in the dry bed of the lake and they blaze a trail. The strange thing no one knows how they move, because it is not transported by the rivers, or by avalanches from the mountains nearby, or tossed around by animals. Some of the stones or rocks weigh more than 700 pounds. It is not man made, the stones are transported a long distance and leave a trail that is etched over time and you can see some of the pictures here.

No one knows how these rocks are moved and what forces influence them to be transported this way. These rocks have been studied over nine decades and no one has seen the rocks move.

The sailing stones found in the Racetrack playa have also been seen at other lakes, but the paths at Racetrack are more prominent than others. There has been no video or film recording available for these rocks so far. So, it adds more mystery to this movement. It is just not one rock, there are many moving rocks seen each creating its own path in the dry lake bed.

360° panorama of Racetrack Playa at night. The Milky Way is visible as the arc in the center.

Researchers have noted that Racetrack stones move once every two or three years and the tracks that they create lasts for three or four years. Stones with rough bottoms create almost straight striped tracks while the smooth bottoms wander along the path way. In some cases, the stones flip over and create a different sized track than earlier.

Any guesses how these sailing stones move?

Color-Changing Concrete Technology

This color changing technology is brought to you by Chromostone.com. The concrete is called Chronos Chromos concrete that is able to systematically display numbers, letters, patterns, and colors in it.

Concrete is usually considered very rigid or not flexible; it cannot be altered once made, so to display anything on it, one could only paint it or make further modifications around it.

However, with flexible concrete, it's easier for building and interior designers and you can do a lot with it. This Chronos Chromos concrete seems to offer flexible concrete technology.

The applications for the concrete can range from simple home applications to complex architectural patterns in buildings.

The video demonstrates a few basic examples of how the system works. The concrete has wires in it and when current is applied, the temperature of the concrete rises, changing colors or surface characteristics. This process means the concrete can actually display numbers and characters.

Patterns applied to Concrete.

No further details are given at the site, but they have contact information if you need for future use.

Apple Launches My Itunes

Apple has launched My ITunes, a set of widgets that may be a first step in taking their fair share of the social music market. Niall Kennedy caught sight of it a couple of days ago.

iTunes is giving you an effortless way to keep your friends up-to-date with your favorite music, TV shows, movies, and more. My iTunes widgets are simple, self-updating add-ons for your web page, social-networking profile, or blog.

Use My iTunes to share your top reviews, favorite artists, and new music, movies, and TV shows from the iTunes Store with anyone who visits your site.

There are currently three embeddable widgets to choose from. One shows recent iTunes purchases. Another shows music you’ve reviewed on iTunes. The last shows a sort of tag cloud of artists you’ve purchased on the iTunes store. The widgets can be customized by size and color.

The first and last widgets only work if you’ve actually bought stuff on iTunes. I’ve bought enough things to create a thinly populated widget below. But what would be far more interesting is a widget that, like iLike, shows your favorite music and plays at least a 30 second snippet of each song.

One in 200 men alive today is a relative of Genghis Khan

An international team of geneticists have found an astonishing statistic; one in every 200 men alive today is a relative of Genghis Khan. These men have the same male Y chromosome as the great warlord Genghis Khan.
Genghis Khan conquered many countries during his reign (between 1162 and 1227) and in this campaign he captured many beautiful women and fathered many children on the way. According to on Persian historian, that within a century of Khan’s birth and his extravagant mating habits had resulted in more than 20,000 children. And now his descendants make about 8% of the men in Central Asia after a genetic study of these men.

Dr. Chris Tyler-Smith and his team from Britain, Italy, China, and Uzbekistan, took tissue samples from 2,000 men from Central Asia and studied their Y chromosome, the genetic code that confers maleness and is passed from father to son.

'Y chromosomes belonging to different men vary slightly. One in every 5,000 DNA units is not the same,' said Tyler-Smith. 'But when we looked at our results, we found a huge group that did not show any differences. We were absolutely amazed.'

Another unique finding the team discovered is that the geographical spread of possessors of the chromosomes matched exactly the conquest of Genghis, which stretched from Mongolia, China and to the Middle East. They discovered that all of these men shared a common ancestor in Genghis Khan.

'There are only two ways a single Y chromosome can make such a mark on a population,' Tyler-Smith said. 'The chromosome could in some way confer its owners with some biological advantage.

The Mongolian armies of Genghis Khan were notorious when they plundered foreign nations; they divided the spoils amongst them after a victory but reserved the beautiful women for Genghis Khan.

There is a community in Pakistan, the Hazaras, who used to claim that they were the direct descendants of Genghis Khan, but were ridiculed for this claim for a long time. But this research team was able to confirm their claim; the Hazaras are descendants of the famous Genghis Khan.

Taking Care of your Wrists - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Wrists are one area that you misuse on a regular basis. We type all day in computers, or mobile phones, even remotes. All these actions put undue stress on the wrists leading to severe aches and pains and in some case Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Wrists can only take so much pounding every day, if we exercise them regularly it will be able to respond well, but we don’t. If wrists are left unattended and subject to stresses everyday will lead to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

From Wikipedia: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition in which the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, leading to pain, paresthesias, and muscle weakness in the forearm and hand. A form of compressive neuropathy, CTS is more common in women than it is in men, and, though it can occur at any age, has a peak incidence around age 42. The lifetime risk for CTS is around 10% of the adult population.

How do we control this Carpal tunnel syndrome and reduces wrist aches and pains? It can be controlled with a set of simple exercise shown below. It just takes just a few minutes every day. You can either do once a day or multiple times a day. Best thing is you can do this anywhere when you ride a bus or when you watch TV or relax in a chair. I do this standing which is the best way. This exercise was suggested by a doctor in Australia to a friend of mine, and with his approval I am adding this here. The pictures are drawn by my friend Andrea.

A summary of this exercise is given below:

• Extend and stretch both wrists and fingers acutely as if they are in a handstand position. Hold this position for a count of five.
• Straighten both wrists and relax fingers for a count of five.
• Make a tight fist with both hands. Then bend both wrists down while keeping the fist. Hold for a count of five.
• Straighten both wrists and relax fingers for a count of five.
• Repeat each exercise 3 times.
• Hang arms loosely at side and shake them for a couple of seconds.
The following pictures illustrate these 6 points.

YouTube helps catch sneaky laptop robber

YouTube is just not a place only to see videos; it is also a place to catch criminals. Thanks to a YouTube video, camera footage of a man stealing a laptop, police were able to nab the criminal in New Zealand.
The man seen in the video walks into a New Zealand electronics store and steals a laptop in broad daylight and video cameras placed inside the store. He thought he was smart and he could get away with it by slipping the laptop inside his overcoat. He then just walked out without anyone noticing the crime except the camera footage which was seen later.

The camera footage was then released to YouTube with the video set to Pink Panther theme music. The video has been watched more than 500,000 views, and finally one of the YouTube viewers recognized the man, 50 year old Dawson Anthony Bliss, in the video. The viewer contacted the police, who arrested Bliss yesterday and was convicted for theft.

Bliss was fined $1,770 New Zealand Dollars (US$1351) and also ordered to pay reparation of $1,762 New Zealand Dollars (US$1344).

We don’t need French Inspector Clouseau, only a YouTube video to catch a thief now.

Oh no! Holidays give you cancer

Vacations are considered to clear one’s mind and give a fresh and renewed outlook at work and at home, but Cancer Research UK says otherwise. Their report says too much vacation may cause cancers.
In UK and Europe, everyone gets away from hot summers and travel to Spain, Greece and other beach locations for their vacations. For many it is a ritual every year. But Cancer Research, UK, a leading cancer charity organization, reports that vacations are not necessarily good for health. In a study they found the following:

• Too much sun causes malignant melanoma
• Too much Food and Cigarettes cause kidney cancer.
• Too much food causes womb cancer
• Too much alcohol causes liver cancer
• Too much alcohol and tobacco causes mouth cancer.

They say in vacations, people tend to too much of the above things, which might contribute more to cancers. In that case staying at home is a much better option. I tried to find the actual report but I couldn’t find it where they correlate vacation to cancers. There may be some influence but not everyone spends vacation whole year. But the above could be a valid point if someone indulges too much in alcohol, cigarettes and food.

According to Cancer Research, UK, rates of melanoma, a form of skin cancer has risen over 40 percent, the primary cause being excess sun burning. Also, mouth, womb and kidney cancers have shown rapid increases in the last 10 years. They suggest a change of lifestyle and moderation could prevent such cancers.

We already know this doing much of anything will cause cancers and other damages to the body. But one thing that this study shows, just because one is on vacation that doesn’t mean they are immune to cancers, so it will be better to take precautions. Instead of drinking too much on vacation, have a moderate amount would be better, so you can enjoy the vacation more. Also, use lot of sun screen and smoke less as well.

Gmail Going Huge: 9000MB+

Mashable.com reports that GMail is planning to increase the storage capacity from 2.8GB to almost 9GB +. Some of the users are already reporting that their GMail capacity has increased to 9GB +.
Among all e-mail providers, GMail had the largest storage capacity, until recently Yahoo converted its e-mail service to unlimited storage. Even though Yahoo Mail has unlimited storage capacity still doesn’t allow pop forwarding of e-mails to Outlook or other accounts, only Google’s GMail offers it free. MSN Hotmail has 2GB storage space only, also allows pop forwarding for paid subscribers only.

Now Google wants to stretch its free offerings even more by providing increased storage capacity for GMail users from 2.8GB + to 9GB+.

Here is one user who has already received this 9GB+ storage in his GMail account:

He says the users may be chosen by Google at random, so hopefully others will start receiving them soon. It will be great for heavy users who have large file attachments. Also, good for Google Drive users who can use GMail as additional storage drive by saving their files virtually. I use this one for sending large files to multiple users at different times, takes less time compared to sending it individually each time.

Google is probably testing it for a few users before making this available for all users. I don’t need that much space right now but it is good Google is offering this, which will come in handy for the future.

Red Cross sued over its - Red cross!

Johnson & Johnson, the famous bandages producer sued Red Cross, the charity organization for one of the most famous symbol and icon in the world, the red cross. Johnson & Johnson claims it has the rights to use the red cross symbol.
The International Committee of Red Cross has its origins dating back to the year 1859 founded by Henry Dunant, who started this to provide humanitarian services in the battlefield treating wounded soldiers. Later they expanded their services to providing relief to disaster areas and provide blood donations. The Red Cross uses the iconic and most recognizable symbol in the world, the red cross sign.

The American Red Cross was established on May 21, 1881 by Clara Barton, in Dansville, New York, which also uses this sign. The problem is Johnson & Johnson also has this symbol in its bandages. The red cross appears on the J&J’s first aid kits and bandages as shown below.

J&J has filed a lawsuit against Red Cross and claims the company had been using this red cross symbol since 1887, even though the Red Cross was founded earlier. In their lawsuit against Red Cross, J&J claims that they trademarked the design consisting of two intersecting red lines of equal length in 1906. They also said Red Cross can use this trademark only “in connection with non profit relief services”.

The J&J lawsuit wants the Red Cross to have:
"all licensed products with the red-cross emblem destroyed and to permanently enjoin all sales of products bearing the emblem on first-aid, safety-preparedness and related products."

But Red Cross has been using the symbol as early as in 1864, when Louis Appia and Charles van de Velde, a captain of the Dutch Army, became the first delegates to work under the symbol of the Red Cross in an armed conflict.

The Red Cross CEO, Mark Everson, called the action "bizarre" and "obscene."

I also think it is an absurd lawsuit, J&J may have filed the trademark first, but the Red Cross has been using that symbol for a number of years prior to that. In fact the trademark shouldn’t have been given to the J&J, because it was already in use by the Red Cross.

What do you think about this lawsuit?

Report links breast implants to higher suicide rate

A new study of women with breast implants finds they are three time more likely to commit suicide. Also, deaths related to mental disorders, drug and alcohol dependence, were three times higher for women who had cosmetic surgery.
A report was published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery, August issue, which showed this troubling trend that women with plastic surgery tend to commit suicide more and counteracts the studies and beliefs that Plastic surgery helps boosts a woman’s self confidence and image.

Study of 3,527 Swedish women who had breast implants between the years 1965 and 1993 was analyzed. Those with breast reconstruction surgery were not included in this study. The researchers tracked these women after their implant surgeries and they found the risk of suicide increased over time. After the initial 10 years there were no increased risk, but between 10 and 19 years after surgery, the suicide risk was 4.5 times higher and six times higher after 20 years of surgery.

Joseph McLaughlin, a professor of medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the senior author for this study, believes the reason for the high suicide rate might lie with women who had psychological problems before they had implants and that their condition did not improve very much afterwards.

Some earlier studies have shown that up to 15 percent of plastic surgery patients have body dysmorphic disorder, which is a psychological condition marked by severe distress over minor physical imperfections. People with such disorder have a higher rate of suicidal thoughts and breast implants surgery doesn’t help much after, either the disorder remains the same or gets worse.

The product itself is a high risk; though the Food and Drug Administration ended a 14 year ban on Silicone filled implants after they found little evidence the implants were unsafe.

Breast augmentation is the popular surgery in the US, followed by liposuction and eyelid surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 315, 516 breast enlargements were done up by 13 percent from 2005.

This study was done only in Sweden, so the results may or may not be the same in other countries, but a similar study can be done in other countries. The manufacturers will not do this, hopefully an independent study like this will help find the results whether the implants surgery is safe or unsafe, so women can make a better choice. Also, the study covers only between 1965 and 1993, so more studies should be done to see how it has affected now compared to before, where the scrutiny on women was more and felt threatened during that time.

Will this trend be the same with modern plastic surgeries?

Eight-million-year-old bug is alive and growing

An 8-million-year-old bacterium that was extracted from the oldest known ice on Earth is now growing in a laboratory, claim researchers.

If confirmed, this means ancient bacteria and viruses will come back to life as ice melts due to global warming. This is nothing to worry about, say experts, because the process has been going on for billions of years and the bugs are unlikely to cause human disease.

Kay Bidle of Rutgers University in New Jersey, US, and his colleagues extracted DNA and bacteria from ice found between 3 and 5 metres beneath the surface of a glacier in the Beacon and Mullins valleys of Antarctica. The ice gets older as it flows down the valleys and the researchers took five samples that were between 100,000 and 8 million years old.

They then attempted to resuscitate the organisms in the oldest and the youngest samples. "We tried to grow them in media, and the young stuff grew really fast. We could plate them and isolate colonies," says Bidle. The cultures grown from organisms found in the 100,000-year-old ice doubled in size every 7 days on average.

Sluggish growth

Whereas the young ice contained a variety of microorganisms, the researchers found only one type of bacterium in the 8-million-year-old sample. It also grew in the laboratory but much more slowly, doubling only every 70 days.

By examining the average length of DNA fragments found in all the ice samples, the researchers determined that frozen DNA is progressively degraded as time passes. Its half life is 1.1 million years – that is, after 1.1 million years half the original DNA has been degraded.

The researchers believe the DNA is degraded by cosmic rays, which are particularly strong at the poles where the Earth's magnetic field is at its weakest.

Paul Falkowski of Rutgers University, who led the study, describes the ancient bacteria as small round cells that had been in a "suspended state of animation for 8 million years". He says the increasingly rapid flow of glaciers into the ocean as a result of global warming could release new organisms into the sea but he does not believe this is cause for concern because marine bacteria and viruses are typically far less harmful to human health than, for instance, those found on land.

Gene bank

Russell Vreeland of the Ancient Biomaterials Institute at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, US, agrees. "This has been happening probably for a long, long time. Ice freezes and melts, rocks sink and are eroded. Microbes have been involved with this process for almost 4 billion years," says Vreeland, who has resuscitated 250-million year-old bacteria found in salt crystals. "Earth acts as a gene bank for microbes."

Similarly, Falkowski and his colleagues describe the glaciers as "gene popsicles" containing DNA that can be acquired by existing organisms when it is thawed.

Vreeland says Falkowski has made a "fascinating discovery". But he says there is a chance the ancient bacteria are in fact very young. Ice, says Vreeland, is a very difficult material to work on without contaminating it. Falkowski's team treated their samples with 95 per cent ethanol and bleach, which Vreeland says are not effective sterilisers.

"I don't see anything wrong with an organism surviving this long but I wouldn’t use these techniques," he says.

If true, however, Falkowski's findings could considerably extend the record for the oldest DNA frozen in ice. Last month, a team of researchers led by Eske Willerslev of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark announced that they had recovered DNA from the Greenland ice sheet that was up to 800,000 years old (see Oldest frozen DNA reveals a greener Greenland).

Nine in 10 Americans say ban texting while driving

Nine out of 10 Americans believe that texting messages while driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving and want a total ban. But 57 percent of them admit sending text messages while driving.
The Harris Interactive survey sponsored by mobile messaging service Pinger Inc., conducted a poll and asked questions about sending text messages and driving at the same time. The poll surveyed 2,049 U.S. adults from June 29 to July 3, giving the survey a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

The poll found 89 percent of the respondents believe texting while driving is dangerous and should be banned. But 66 percent of them said they read text messages or e-mails while driving and 57 percent of them send text messages when driving, both of which are equally dangerous.

Only 6 states in the US including Washington, New York, California and Florida have banned texting according to Pinger.

Those who send text messages, both sexes send them equally. A majority of them were young in the age group 18 to 34 (64%), while 6% were aged 55 or older.

The survey found that men and women sent text messages while driving at equal rates but that the young did so more frequently. Sixty-four percent of those who admitted to sending text messages while driving were aged 18 to 34 while 6 percent were 55 or older.

I think the Federal government should make a national law for this instead of letting the individual states to set this ban. The best course of action is not to multitask when driving, only focus on the road. One of my friends said in the majority of such accidents involved only the good drivers suffer and get injured or killed.

Do you multitask when driving?

Pet Bear Just Like Dog, Family Says

Sam Friday, the owner with Abby the bear.

Sam and Samantha Friday have a pet bear and treat it like a dog. They take Abby, the bear for rides and say the bear loves it. The Friday’s have a license to raise the bear from the local Pennsylvania state game commission.
Sam and Samantha Friday live in Pennsylvania and have a pet female bear named Abby. They say it is just like a pet dog, only a little bigger and with wild animal instincts.

Sam Friday said he grew up in the country and has always loved animals. He said he used to have another bear for 20 years before he had Abby. He believes that if the animals are treated properly, they will treat the owners the same. He said: “Give the love and caring and they'll give you loving and caring back”.

When the bear rides with the Friday’s, it sticks out its gigantic head out the window.

The Fridays are able to own the bear because of a special license they have with the local State Game Commission.

Sam said he takes her with wherever he goes and says Abby loves it. He said it is not easy raising a bear but is worth it.

"In the middle of the night, you hear crash, boom, and the refrigerator are totally empty, or you don't feel good and she starts licking your ear," he said. "We ride around and she's just like a person and holds on to you. She's awesome."

Hope the bear doesn’t turn on the family and then we hear it is being put down. What do you think about raising a pet bear?

Should Alcoholic Beverages Have Nutrition Labels?

Alcoholic beverages unlike other food products don’t have any nutritional information until now, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau wants the beverage makers to have this information available in the bottle label.
One side like the Mother Against Drunk Driving wants a ban or limits the drinks provided to the drinkers, while on the other side beverage makers and lobbyists promote drinking in the form of advertisements and TV campaigns. Many claim alcohol drinks are healthy, while others say it is harmful for health. Those who proclaim alcohol drinking is healthy would love this news to put the nutritional information on the beer bottles.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau issued a ruling recently which requires all alcoholic beverages to have the labeling information on the containers such as serving size, alcohol content, amount of calories, carbohydrate, fat and protein content. The beverage makers have vigorously tried to have this information for a long time, so they will be extremely happy with this ruling. While the Advocacy groups are worried that the nutrition labels will imply that alcoholic beverages have nutritional value and promote more drinking.

I think it will offer good information to the public, so they can decide whether it is better for them or not. Do you favor this nutritional labeling information on the alcoholic beverages?

Watches made from Titanic's hull go on sale for £75,000

Watches made from the doomed Titanic are going up on sale for up to £75,000 (nearly $150,000), they are made from the hull of the Titanic. The coal which was recovered from the seabed has been mixed with ceramics to create black dials for the watches.
Titanic lies 12,500 feet under the North Atlantic Ocean where it sank after it hit an iceberg killing 1,500 passengers. The metal from its hull was salvaged by divers and then blended with modern ship building steel to make the casing of these special watches.

The coals that were used in Titanic’s furnaces were also salvaged from the seabed, which was then mixed with ceramics to create black dials for the watches.

Romain Jerome SA, the Swiss company, is making these limited edition watches of 2,012 in numbers, a reference to the year 2012, and the 100th anniversary of Titanic’s disaster in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Swiss company also is giving the watches a unique rusted appearance using the Oxidization techniques at a lab in Switzerland.

Significance is the new alloy; new steel and the old tarnished metal have been blended at the same shipping yard, Harland and Wolff shipyard at Belfast, where the original Titanic was built.

Rare: A watch made from the doomed ship Titanic

However, not everyone is happy with the Titanic watches; many of the Titanic enthusiasts have criticized them as a bad taste. The Titanic remains should be in the Museum not in the watches and sold for profit.

Doomed: The Titanic

Yvan Arpa, chief executive of Geneva-based Romain Jerome, said:

"We wanted to make a watch that had history and this is the rarest, most historical metal we could get hold of.”

He said he got the idea, when he saw a piece of Berlin Wall on a mantle piece at a friend’s home. He then decided to do the same with Titanic’s parts in the form of watches.

Arpa said this watch will give people a chance to carry a piece of history with them in their wrist. Not everyone will be able to afford this because of its limited availability and the other reason, the prices of the watches, which ranges from £4,500 ($9,000) to £75,000 ($150,000) based on materials used, steel, silver or gold with diamonds in it.

What do you think, should the Titanic be in the museum or it should be in the form of watches and salvaged for other uses?

Students Lined up Against Wall, Shot Execution-style

Four young people, including three active students at Delaware State University, were shot in the head at close range in a school parking lot, killing all but one. CBS

Four friends were lined up against the wall by the killer or killers and shot execution style. Three of them were planning to attend Delaware State University the next semester. Three are dead and one injured and listed in fair condition.
Police said the four friends were listening to music outside Mt. Vernon School when they were apparently chosen at random and shots were fired against them after they were made to line up against the wall. The victims include two Delaware State University students, who were planning to attend coming Fall Semester.

Beverly Reid, the great aunt of the two victims is distraught about their deaths and couldn’t fathom why they were lined up and shot mercilessly.

The victims shown in the photo are Ofemi Hightower, Deshawn Harvey and Terrance Aeriel. Natasha Aeriel sister of Terrance Aerial survived the attack is listed in fair condition.

Beverly said she knows all four kids; they were bright, friendly and did really well in school. They had a good future until it was curtailed short by the killers.

Newark Police Chaplain John McClain and uncle of Ofemi Hightower said this incident is the worst he has seen in his 54 year career.

“She had no enemies. She was a sweetheart,” added Hightower's brother Jamal Hightower. “She got along with everybody.”

Nobody knows why they had ended up at the school; they were supposed to go to a party. They might have been lured there also; more investigations will clear this case.

This is the 60th murder this year in Newark, so the community and the mayor are outraged. Beverly Reid said maybe the curfew will stop this violence. But neither the politicians nor law enforcement officials have the answers to quell the violence.

If you live near the Newark area and if have any information about the killer or killers, please contact the local authorities. They don’t deserve to be protected.

This incident follows Virginia Tech massacre, students dying senselessly.

What is the solution to stop this violence which is spiraling out of control? One could be parenting, teaching children how a life is important and to be valued at. Gun control could be another solution but National Rifle Association has massive powers with the congress, so they won’t allow any regulations against it. Hollywood and TV which glorifies killings, many of the movies shows killers succeed in the end.

9 Reasons why An Apple a Day Really Keeps the Doctor away

MacIntosh Apple

We all know the statement, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, except it is healthy; but we don’t know the specifics, and how it contributes to our health. It helps our immune system, heart, fight cancers and more.
Except for Apple, no other fruit comes close and can be regarded in the same manner as apple in terms of their contribution to health. Apple combines many unique properties in one fruit; other fruits have some of it but not all of the properties

Here is how Apple contributes to health.

1-Apple contains Vitamin C.

Vitamin C helps the body’s immune system greatly. Those who lack in poor Vitamin C have problems with poor healing time; they bruise or injure easily and have bleeding gums.

2. Prevents Heart Diseases.

Apples are rich in flavanoid, which have good antioxidant properties, so it is able to help prevent both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease.

3-Low in calories.

Apple unlike other fruits and chocolates snack items has only 70 to 100 calories. If one is hungry it is better to eat an Apple, contains only sugar and has only ¼ of the calories of other snack items.

4-Prevent Cancers.

Apple doesn’t prevent just one cancer but a plurality of cancers. Apple targets multiple cancers such as colon, cancer prostate caner, and breast cancer in women.

5-Apples contain phenols, which have a double effect on cholesterol.

Apple is a unique it helps reduce bad cholesterol at the same time increase good cholesterol. Another point it prevents LDL Cholesterol from turning into an oxidized LDL, which is a dangerous form of bad cholesterol.

6-Prevent tooth decay.

Bacteria in the teeth hasten tooth decay by causing damages to the structure of the teeth. The juice of the apple helps prevent this tooth decay by attacking the bacteria; it is known to kill up to 80% of bacteria. Along with the toothpaste, apple will form a formidable force against tooth decay, so you will see less of the Dentist in the future.

Costs Nothing but Costs High for Not Doing It:

All the following doesn’t cost a dime or a penny, but why we are doing it? What is the problem?

- To smile at your customer, co-worker, neighbor, passerby, children

- To put trash in waste/trash containers only

- To say a kind word or praise for a good effort

- To say thanks after being helped

- To reciprocate the help

- To coexist with nature or feel empathy for animals and trees

- To stop smoking in front of children, others

- To stop using a mobile phone while driving

- To judge everyone equally without prejudice

- To not to rip or cheat your customers, friends, relatives

- To find a solution that helps everyone not the chosen ones (e.g. Iraq, Palestine)

- To lend a helping hand after success or becoming rich

- To sell a product that helps the customers not kill the customers (e.g. Cigarette, Alcohol, Colas - Causes Cancer)

Chinese Dog Swims 2 Kilometers to Feed Her Newborns

Dog mom Hua Hua and her kids [Photo: Chongqing Wan Bao]

Hua Hua, the new mom of four dog cubs, is considered a hero by many locals in flood struck Chongqing city, for her brave deed and unconditional love shown towards her four newborn puppies stranded in an island.
Hua Hua, a street dog temporarily lives in a park along the Changbin Road in the southwestern City. Every day, Hua Hua jumps into the flooded Yangtze River, swims more than two kilometers to an isolated island separated from the Park by the river. Then she comes back to the main land to forage for food and repeat this swimming procedure again. She does this every day a minimum of two times a day and it seems she has not stopped during the past few weeks.

The map shows how far Hua Hua had to swim every day to look after her babies. [Photo: Chongqing Wan Bao]

A chance encounter by a Chinese swimmer found out the reason why this dog was swimming back and forth to the Island. Huang Pinghui, a swimmer and Tai Chi devotee, does morning exercise every day. One day he was resting in the island called Shanhuba (meaning Carol Dam). After the Yangtze River got flooded last month, this island become separated from the main land. So, the locals use it primarily as a resting place for swimmers like Huang. To his surprise, Huang found four new born dog cubs, only a few weeks old.

Huang then understood that the street dog Hua Hua was the mother of these newborns, which got separated after the flood and got trapped in it. So, Hua Hua was going back and forth getting food for the four puppies.

Huang was very impressed with this dog’s effort, so he wrote the story and asked his friend to post it in a blog in a pet themed website. After that he received many offers to volunteer to help this dog and the puppies. Initially he refused, was more worried about the safety the dogs, later he accepted the food from them to feed Hua Hua, so it doesn’t have to swim every time to get the food.

Huang said, soon he will look for a better shelter and probably find a safe home for the puppies. It is a brave dog and great effort by Huang and his friends.

Manchester United Recruits 9-year-old YouTube phenom

A Grandfather was able to showcase his grandson’s football or soccer talents to Manchester United Club with the help of a video. The club was awed by his skills and recruited him after watching a 4 minute video clip of nine year old Rhain Davis.

Manchester United Club brought the soccer prodigy Rhain Davis after they received a DVD from his Grandfather. The DVD showcased the boy playing for an under-10 team in Brisbane, Australia.

"Manchester United is proud of its history of developing talented young players, and invests considerable time and resources into trying to find the best young players of the future," the club said in a statement.

Rhain Davis video shown in YouTube has more 800,000 views so far, many of the commenters call him the next “Wayne Rooney” another football star in Manchester United. Some of his football moves looks more like another Manchester United star “Cristian Ronaldo”.

Davis is now in England and training with a Manchester United Youth squad. He said he is happy playing of Manchester United and meeting a lot of famous players including Wayne Rooney.

Davis even though he plays for Australian teams, he was originally born in England and has a British Passport. His Grandfather lives in England.

Davis should be thankful to his Grandfather and maybe retain him as an agent for future football contracts.

Son of Hubble, Prepare for a 2013 Liftoff

The Hubble Space Telescope is 17 years old and is able to work far beyond its designed mission term. NASA is preparing to give a final tune up next year. The JWST will be the next generation telescope that will replace the Hubble Space Telescope.

The video shows an animation of how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the next generation for the Hubble Space Telescope will be deployed in the year 2013.

I wrote an earlier topic about the workings of JWST here. JWST is scheduled to be launched in 2013 and will be located at a farther distance than the Hubble telescope to peer at the Space deeper and further. It will be able to see back to about 400 million years after the big bang, so we can see incredible pictures and stars and galaxies formations.

Every time you get new capabilities, you see a quantum jump in progress," says Mark Clampin, the observatory's project scientist. "I'm sure we'll discover things we've never seen before."

The New Space Telescope, Unfolded

1 Mirrors
JWST is equipped with 18 hexagonal beryllium mirrors, 51 inch wide. Beryllium is lighter, stronger and more stable than glass mirrors employed in Hubble. This array in JWST will weigh half and two and half times larger compared to the Hubble’s and hence can carry more payload or other instruments. Each segment can be pivot into six different directions and can be controlled from Earth.

2 Micro shutters
The business end of the telescope (the collector) has 62,415 openings, measuring about 100 x 200 microns each. It can capture spectrographs, images of incoming electro magnetic radiations from 100s of galaxies at the same time. Just like the mirrors, these shutters can be open or closed and controlled from Earth.

3 Infrared devices
The new telescope features four high-pixel density image sensor arrays — not so different from the ones found at the heart of a typical digicam. There is a near-infrared camera, a near-infrared spectrograph, a mid-infrared camera and a fine guidance sensor. In this case, there's a near-infrared camera, a near- infrared spectrograph, a mid-infrared camera, and a fine guidance sensor. This infrared reading capability allows seeing distant time points closer to big bang.

4 Sun shield
Sun's heat can easily overwhelm the infrared light that the telescope is looking for. Solution: five tennis-court-sized Mylar shields. The shields are coated in aluminum and conductive silicon; the open parasols will keep the scope cold to capture the images while protecting it from harmful radiation from the sun. The five layers protect the instrument from micrometeoroids or fine dust particles in space.

5 Location
Earth is not a good place to look at Space, the hazy atmosphere, heat in the atmosphere affects infrared imaging and clouds distorts focus. The JWST will be located at Lagrange point 2, a spot 932,000 miles from the Earth and is balanced by the Sun’s and Earth’s gravities.

Ghost chili is named World’s Hottest Pepper

The image “http://msnbcmedia4.msn.com/i/msnbc/Components/Art/HEALTH/070731/AP_INDIAS_CHILI.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

In Assam, India grows the world’s hottest pepper called “Bhut Jolokia” in Hindi which when translated means “Ghost Chili”. The residents there use this chili as a common item in their foods, they mix it with sauces, and some eat it raw.
Digonta Saikai, a local farmer in Assam says this pepper is so hot, the feeling is like dying. He once told a visitor if they eat one of these chilies, they will not be able to leave this place.

A few months ago Guinness Book of World Records made it officially “Ghost Chili” as the hottest pepper in the world.

Even a smallest bit of this pepper in the food or sauce will make it barely edible. If you eat a raw pepper it causes watering eyes and a runny nose.

An entire chili is an all-out assault on the senses, akin to swigging a cocktail of battery acid and glass shards.

The locals have been eating this pepper for generations, besides its use as a spice it is used to cure stomach troubles and also a way to fight the summer heat ranging in excess of 130 deg Fahrenheit. Who would have thought a spice can be used to quell the heat, but the locals do this on a regular basis to ward off heat. Maybe it is the Thermodynamics, the body is so hot, and it considers the surroundings chillier.

How hot is this “Ghost Chili” compared to other chili peppers? It has more than 1,000,000 Scoville units, the scientific measurement of a chili’s spiciness. The spiciness is measured by calculating its content of capsaicin, the chemical that gives the spice flavor in the pepper.

In comparison to other hot spices available in the market, a Classic Tabasco sauce has 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units, Jalapeno pepper measures 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville units, and the previous world record holder Red Savina Habenero contained 580,000 Scovilles. The “Bhut Jolokia” on the other hand tested at a staggering 1,001,304 Scoville units.

A chili’s spiciness can be scientifically measured by calculating its content of capsaicin, the chemical that gives a pepper its bite, and counting its Scoville units.

Because of the Guinness Book of World Records and sudden boost in the popularity, the farmers are trying to grow more and export it internationally. By the time it reaches the market, it might be watered down to reduce its spice intensity.

Despite the popularity of this Pepper, Assam however undergoes lot of strife and terrorism problems, there is a war going on there with the separatists want to split from India. There is also widespread poverty in the region. Some think maybe the boost in the sales of this pepper will help the economy grow in that region and lessen the strife.

A farmer reacts after eating a "Bhut jolokia," or "ghost chili" pepper during his lunch at Changpool in the northeastern Indian state of Assam. Manish Swarup / AP file

This “Bhut Jolokia” cannot be grown in all regions however; it seems it is better suited in the hilly regions, heat and humidity of Assam and the Indian Northeast regions.

I have to check the local stores to see whether they are available in the US, but maybe in the future this pepper might be exported here. But for now, it is available only in the Indian Northeast region.

Are you ready for this World’s Hottest Pepper? Is it worth it to endure the pain to get a cure for stomach and help cope hotter weather? No wonder they say, “No Pain, No Gain”.

Cannabis joint hits lungs like 5 cigarettes

Researchers from the Medical Research Institute, New Zealand have found out that smoking Cannabis impacts the lungs two to five times more than smoking cigarette alone caused by deep inhaling and filter less joints.
The Cannabis smokers are impacted with lung disease far more than other tobacco smokers and non smokers. The cannabis users usually smoke their joints without filters and inhale deeply and because of this the smoke is hotter when it hits the lung directly compared to filtered cigarettes. The users also hold the breath longer to get a good high and thus causing damage to their lungs even more.

The New Zealand researchers did this experiment on 339 volunteers and divided them into four categories, one who smoke only cannabis, those who smoke tobacco only, those who smoke both Cannabis and tobacco, and those who smoke neither. Cannabis smoking causes decreased lung density on HRCT scans. Macroscopic emphysema was detected in 1/75 (1.3%), 15/92 (16.3%), 17/91 (18.9%) and 0/81 subjects in the cannabis only, combined cannabis and tobacco, tobacco alone and non-smoking groups. respectively.

The volunteers’ lungs were scanned by Computed Tomography (CT) to get a high-definition image of their lungs and tests were conducted to check their air flow or breathing efficiency (respiratory efficiency).

From the results, it is interesting to see those who smoke Cannabis only have a less or no significant influence in causing emphysema (Only 1 out of 75 users), but the testing of their lungs show far severe damages. Tobacco smokers and combined Cannabis and Tobacco smokers show serious damages of emphysema, a degenerative and crippling lung disease. Cannabis smokers had lighter symptoms such as wheeze, cough, chest tightness and phlegm, which tobacco smokers also had but with heavier symptoms.

The CT analysis showed that the cannabis smokers had more fine damages on their lungs. This had happened in small fine airways that are important for bringing in oxygen and taking away waste gases. As a result, their lungs had to work harder.

The damages were proportional to the number of Cannabis joints they smoked. In statistical terms, each joint contributed to damages equivalent of smoking two to five cigarettes.

Professor Richard Beasley, the lead researcher said the results are troubling since cannabis is the most widely used drug worldwide, an estimated 160 million people use cannabis (Source: UN Office on Drugs and Crime).

If the cannabis users still want to get high even after reading this New Zealand study, they should say adieu to their lungs.
