Body Rebellion

Markus Schulz - Without You Near

Scene:

A lover (Deepak) is separated from his fiancé (Sandhya); she had to go visit her parents for a holiday. The lover feels restless even though she will be back soon in a week. And he writes the following:

Body Rebellion:

“My Heart says to me,

‘Where is my inspiration?,

What have you done to her?,

If I don’t see her soon, I will beat ‘em loud’,

My legs says to me,

‘I am losing the exuberance in my steps,

Why is she not here yet, liar?,

I could run myself without you to her’,

My hands says to me,

‘I want to feel her,

Where she makes me feel counted,

Do I have to hit you senseless to make her come to me’,

My mouth says to me,

‘I want to kiss her,

Her kisses just send me to utopia,

If I don’t see her, all you will hear curses’,

My eyes says to me,

‘I want to see her,

Searching for her on all directions makes me go blind,

If she is not her immediate, I’ll burn you with venom’,

My ears says to me,

‘It is an uneasy silence without her,

There is a music and harmony when she is around,

I would rather go deaf than hear others’ sounds’,

Love,

‘They rebel like angry children,

Pulling the mother’s hands and legs in diverse directions,

How can I quell the rebellion alone?

Come soon or they will tear me asunder’.

LED Alarm Clock - Bend Time and Space

An alarm clock that can bend in time and space, sounds like an Einstein kind of clock. But it is just an Earth grounded clock with human controls, made up of four cubes each displaying the four digits, the hour and minute pieces and moved independently.
The LED Alarm Clock is made up of four cubes of size, 1” (2.54 centimeters) x 1.5” (3.81 centimeters).

These cubes can moved independent of each other and can be arranged and moved around and placed as you like.

Each of the cubes has a separate controller to adjust the time, set the alarm, and dim the LED lights and also a Snooze button.

It is currently available now from Suck.com in UK and is priced at a rather steep £75 ($150). You can purchase it from here. Einstein will be happy with the design but not with the price. Will make a good one for the interior design of the high priced homes.

Anti-Stress Tool with Musti Mudra

Musti Mudra

Reduce your stress with Musti Mudra, Yoga Mudra.
Anger and Fears occupying the mind? Stressed out at the end of the day. Having a good sleep is an unfilled dream. A dream that comes during the sleep is nothing but a nightmare. Then Musti Mudra is the key. This mudra will help you to slow down after a hectic day.

Bend all your fingers and close them with your thumb on both hands.

This is a simple yoga technique called Mudra, I do few of other Mudras, it works very effectively. From Wikipedia definition: A mudrā (Sanskrit, मुद्रा, literally "seal") is a symbolic gesture usually made with the hand or fingers. Along with āsanas (seated postures), they are employed in the yoga meditation practice of Hinduism.

You can either sit in a chair with proper balance and do this Yoga Mudra or you can try along with some asanas by sitting down in a mat in the ground. This Mudra is similar to Acupressure, very easy to do, by applying gentle pressure in the fingers, the pressure point communicates to the brain and heals the cause. You can do this while you commute in a bus, or when you chat with a friend, or watching TV, but a quite place is preferred most. Just few minutes a day you will notice a big difference.

Firefox Running Slow? Make It Fast Again Without Re-Installation

The image “http://digitaljournal.com/images/photo/firefox-logo.png” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

With time, Firefox becomes very slow, bloated with too many extensions, themes, toolbars, temporary files and in some cases it occupies the CPU memory too much. Do you want to make it fast without reinstalling? There is a simple solution.
After most people install Firefox, they keep adding so many extensions and , themes which, for some reason, slows down the speed of Firefox. It is still faster than Internet Explorer, but nevertheless slow.

You might have tried various methods such as uninstalling the extensions, some themes, some cases the toolbars, removed temporary files stored in the computer etc., still you will find the same, slow speed of Firefox. It is a problem nobody could find out the reason why.

Luckily for us, Labnol has a solution. Just follow these simple steps and your Firefox will look faster than ever before.

Step 1: First export all your bookmarks to a folder because we will need them later.

Go to Bookmarks --> Organize Bookmarks --> File --> Export.

By this step you will save the bookmarks, which you can retrieve later for your new Firefox Profile.

Step 2: Go to Start --> Run --> Type “Firefox –P” or as shown below in the picture.

Step 3: Click the “Create Profile” button, while keeping your old profile intact (usually it is called default), so if you don’t like the new profile you can revert back to your old one easily. Make a new profile with “Create Profile” button and then click “Start Profile”.

That’s it, your Firefox will be turbocharged and the speed of your browsing will be obvious with this solution. Now to get all your bookmarks again do the same as you did in Step 1, except for the last one.

Go to Bookmarks --> Organize Bookmarks --> File --> Import.

You may have also made changes in the Firefox Dictionary, if you have added a number of words, then you copy “persdict.dat” word list file from your old profile (check the Program Files – Mozilla Folder) and copy it into your new profile name.

One disadvantage is there will be no Fox add ons, so you have to reinstall the favorite ones again, but at least you can install only the ones you need most.

This new profile will make the Firefox faster and it won’t occupy your CPU too much so the computer won’t crash.

Again if you don’t like the one or still want to access your old one just do the following and click the old profile (default) and will revert back to older version.

Go to Start --> Run --> Type “Firefox –P”

Everything will be intact.

I did the same it works like a charm, only problem I had to reinstall a few extensions and toolbars, but the new one is much faster. Let me know if you have any questions.

Curative powers of cinnamon

Cinnamon Spice. Image Ref: Google

In Ancient India, the gurus that practiced Ayurvedic medicine believed that every plant carries a cure for some disease. One of the plants they use is cinnamon bark (powder), which is used to treat various ailments such as colds, diabetes and indigestion.
Cinnamon tree is native to India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Egypt. In India and China, cinnamon has been widely used to treat various ailments for centuries. Cinnamon also is believed to provide a boost of energy and aid circulation of blood in the body. The spice also commonly used for deserts and adds a significant flavor; some use it for coffee and tea instead of sugars.

Cinnamon is used to treat the following ailments:

• Treatment of Type 2 diabetes: A lot of studies have been done to show the effectiveness of cinnamon for treating Type 2 diabetes. The medical journal Diabetes Care in 2003 reported that a study done on 60 people with Type 2 diabetes showed blood sugar levels dropped by 18 to 29 percent. They were given varying amounts of cinnamon from a quarter spoon to one teaspoon for 40 days and all showed a lower blood sugar levels.

• Lowers blood sugar: A Swedish study which was reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that small addition of cinnamon to a food dish (like rice pudding) lowers the post meal rise of blood sugar.

• Cold relief: A tablespoon of honey (warm), mixed with one third of a teaspoon of powdered cinnamon, taken for two to three days gives relief from colds.

• Indigestion: Boiling a half teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a glass of water provides relief from indigestion. You can add to this mixture, a half teaspoon of honey and a pinch of pepper powder. One tablespoon of this combined mixture taken after a meal provides relief from indigestion.

It also has a beneficial effect on LDL cholesterol and triglycerides (fat present in food) too. Cinnamon also has a blood thinning effect, so if you are taking anti-clotting medication, you should report this to your doctor. Pregnant women should not take a large dose of cinnamon, should consult with their doctors.

Cinnamon is natural and readily available. It also makes an excellent flavor to the food and desserts. In Indian food, some times they use the whole bark adds a great flavor to food in Biryani, one of the exotic foods in Indian cooking. Add cinnamon to your spice rack, has multiple uses.

Have An Old, Broken iPod? Get Cash For It Fast with BuyMyBrokenIpod

The image “http://digitaljournal.com/images/photo/ipod_5g.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

You want to get rid of your old or broken iPods and want cash in exchange fast, then try BuyMyBrokeniPod.com. It will buy iPod with any condition and will pay for it, no questions asked.
You can sell your old iPods at eBay or Craigslist, but if you have a broken iPod at hand (like a broken screen) then you have to throw them in a trash. But if you need some money for it then try BuyMyBrokeniPod, based on the condition of your iPod it will give some money in exchange for the iPod. You can get an estimate from the site itself.

The site BuyMyBrokeniPod was launched early this year, they claim to have processed more than 1,000 iPods from happy customers. According to TechCrunch, they have an average price paid for a working iPod is $100 (range from $10 to $330). A broken one will get a $30 price (range from $2 to $216). The customer has to ship it to their Colorado facility and then they pay for it either via PayPal or check.

Michael Arrington tried to find the price for a slightly used 8GB iPhone, he said he got a $213 price estimate. His last generation 60GB iPod is worth $63. He said it is competitive with eBay prices plus it is a simple no hassle process. I think this is the best place to send broken iPods and still get some money for it.

They receive the broken iPods and sell them in bulk to third parties, who may recycle some of the parts. Working iPods are refurbished and resold directly to resellers. The site seems to have plenty of good feedback from customers.

It is available only for the US.

380 Billion Plastic Bags per year Only 5 Percent Recycled

Plastic bags. Image Ref: Google

After the plastic water bottle, plastic bags are the biggest waste generated in the US and worldwide. More than 380 billion plastic bags are used every year, and only 5.2% of plastic bags are recycled. The others remain in landfills for 1,000 years.
Plastic bags are made from oil by product; it costs about 1.6 billion gallons of petroleum to produce 380 billion plastic bags each year according to FastCompany.com. Along with plastic bottles, plastic bags add a significant amount of waste in landfill and a big contributing factor for Global warming.

The municipalities feel a big burden in recycling these plastic bags, some of them get clogged in pipes, drains and ditches, so they want the retailers to change to a better alternative than plastic bags. The San Francisco city spends $8 million a year on bag cleanup. They have issued a ban on plastic bags for grocery stores making more than $2 million a year as well as the drug stores with more than five locations in the city to use compostable bags. The ban starts November 20th for grocery stores and next May for drug stores. The city will collect these compostable bags from households and turn them into fertilizer.

The new bags are expensive; they cost about 5 to 10 cents per piece, plastic bags costs 1 to 4 cents. The disadvantage however for the compostable bags are they need special machines to recycle them, if left in landfills it will just act like plastic bags.

Other cities like New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, are also planning to have a similar measure like San Francisco’s. But there are some retailers who are already doing it on their own, out of which Ikea’s seems to be the most effective; they charge 5 cents for every plastic bag. As a result the customers have stopped using plastic bags and instead bring their own bags.

It is just not the retailer saves money by using less plastic bags, there is another major reason says Spiers-Lopez of Ikea. In the long term it’s a good decision for the customers and for the earth. Ikea also reduced the reusable cloth totes from 99 cents to 59 cents when they started charging 5 cents for the plastic bag. Ikea said sales of totes bags went 10 times more.

It is better for us if we stop using plastic bags and use more cloth bags and totes instead. If you are still using plastic bags, try to recycle all of them instead of putting them in trash, where they will remain for 1,000 years. Do the right thing.

Another passes by the door?

Any other day
You just look around and all you see is gone...
All you say see is gone...

YouTube and Google Checkout for the non-profit world

Google is launching a global initiative, a Non-Profit Program to help charities spread their messages easily via YouTube and generate funds and donations via Google Checkout. This will help charities to broadcast their messages freely worldwide.

Google unveiled its YouTube’s Non-Profit Program at the Clinton Global Initiative to help non-profit organizations connect easily with the world’s largest online video community. Video is a great form to convey the charity’s message and achievements, with YouTube’s help; the charities can develop their own channel and spread their messages to their audience, embed their videos in blog sites and allow users to share their videos with friends.

There are number of participants in this YouTube initiative, American Cancer Society, Friends of the Earth, the ONE.org and others. Here the video shows the ONE.org campaign, they do an amazing job in trying to eliminate poverty in the world.

Another thing Google added for this initiative is allowing the charities to accept donations via their Google Checkout service, where the charities will get their money with no service fees and via secure server. This is excellent news for charities and will save overhead costs, PayPal and other Credit card companies charge a minimum of 3% transaction fees.

If you know any charities pass this message so they can reach more audience and be able to process donations easily.

Ancient 124 mile wall found in Iran

Map of the ancient Wall in Iran. Image Ref: http://medlem.spray.se/

Archaeologists in Iran have discovered a 124 mile long wall, only the second longest structure in Asia after the Great Wall of China. It was found in Golestan province in northern Iran to defend against Great Wall of China.
A team of British and Iranian archaeologists have uncovered another Great Wall like structure in Golestan Province located in northern part of Iran. It is a 124 mile long wall constructed centuries ago to defend against the nomadic tribes called Epthalites from Central Asia during the 5th and 6th Century.

Archeologists also found a 31 mile long section of a canal near the wall, which they think people living in that area might have used it to move water from the Gorganrud River to their homes. This canal was still in use as recent as 1979 until the French Engineers built the Voshmgir Dam according to the Fars news agency in Iran.

A portion of the wall in Iran.

Here you can read more about the wall.

It is a significant find even though it is not as long as the Great Wall of China nevertheless a good piece of history. You can find plenty of masterpieces here from ancient Iran who had skilled architects and designers. The famed Taj Mahal was built by a Persian craftsman.

Is the Apple Newton Making a Comeback?

Apple Newton

Apple is planning to launch the Apple Newton again after the success of its iPhone product. A team within Apple is reportedly working on a newer version of Newton, utilizing the same touch interface of iPhone and Mac OS X Leopard, new operating system.
Apple doesn’t want to rest on its laurels after the success of iPhone; it wants to work on newer models and go after newer markets. They want to revive their once popular Apple Newton model, the predecessor of Palm and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant). It was successful at the beginning but suddenly Steve Jobs pulled the plug and stopped producing Apple Newton. But now after seeing the popularity of iPhone, they want to bring them back to go against Windows Mobile and Palm PDAs.

The iPhone itself is a Smartphone, a PDA, but doesn’t have many applications or programs built in. One can only access a few applications for now and to get the other functions, the users have to access the web like Google Calendar.

The new Apple Newton will employ similar touch screen and interface like the iPhone versions, have copy and paste feature and will operate on Mac OS X Leopard operating system. So, it will have a desktop like feel in a handheld. So, synchronization will then become easy between the desktop and Newton similar to Palm handheld synchronization feature.

With the new Apple Newton, Steve Jobs may be trying to target PDA market and business customers, who are now reluctant to buy iPhones for their companies because of its restrictive use with AT&T.

Mashable.com says Steve Jobs may announce the Apple Newton release as early as next January at Macworld.

Palm should seriously worry about this news, already they are stunned what to do after the release of iPhone, now with Apple Newton it will become a major headache. Palm’s handhelds have plenty of functions compared to iPhone's, but they lack a good design and ease of use, the two things they seem to focus last.

Library Fines Dead Woman For Overdue Book

It doesn’t matter whether the person is dead or not, they should still pay the fine for overdue books at Westchester County Library in New York State. Elizabeth Schaper had to pay a fine for a book checked out by her dead mother.
Elizabeth Schaper’s mother Ethel Schaper died at the age of 87 on September 16 after a massive stroke. A few days later she found an overdue book checked out by her mother, who was an avid reader and used to check out plenty of books from the Westchester County Library.

Ethel Schaper did the right thing by returning the book, “The Price of Silence” by Camilla Trincheri, to the library. However, the man behind the counter had a different idea and charged Ethel a late fee of 50 cents for the overdue book.

Schaper said to WCBSTV.com:

I told him that maybe he didn’t hear me right, that my mother had just died, otherwise I’m sure that she would have returned it on time. His only reply was that, ‘That will be 50 cents.”’

Ethel was dumbfounded and shocked to hear this; but she paid the fine and left the library. Ethel must have felt she was dealing with a robot instead of a human being.

Connie Perrotta, a secretary for the director of the Harrison Public Library, confirmed the incident but declined to comment further about the incident.

A few days later another library employee called Ethel and apologized for the incident and offered to return the fine she had paid for her mother’s overdue book.

All ends well, but I am surprised, how common courtesy and politeness has become a lost art. I use the university bus sometimes, the guys don’t offer seats for the ladies or elders, and if you do they look at you odd. Do you see similar things around you?

Baby tigers and baby orangutans become the best of friends

A pair of Sumatran tiger cubs and a set of young orangutans, abandoned at birth have become inseparable after sharing a room in an Indonesian zoo. They have lived side by side without any incident for the last one month according to the zoo authorities.
Another great example of harmony in the wild kingdom, a pair of Sumatran tiger cubs and a pair of orangutans has become best of friends. Both the cubs and orangutans were abandoned at birth and are raised in a zoo shelter.

Sri Suwarni, the Indonesian zookeeper, who takes care of them said both the tiger cubs and orangutans have lived together peacefully during the past month without any incident. Suwarni said they play together like babies as seen in the pictures below.

However this friendship will be short-lived, soon the tiger cubs will be fed meat after three months and they may or may not show their wild nature against the orangutans according to the veterinarian Retno Sudarwati. So, most likely they will be separated to protect the animals after some time.

Both the Sumatran tigers and orangutans are endangered species because of shrinking habitat in Indonesia. Conservationists estimate there are only fewer than 700 Sumatran tigers alive, 60,000 orangutans remain in the wild. The population in Indonesia is growing leading to illegal logging, poaching and spread of new farms; as a result more than 90% of Indonesian jungle has been destroyed affecting a considerable number of animal and bird species.

Hopefully this story will raise awareness in Indonesia and their citizens will give some living space for such beautiful animals, otherwise many species will be lost forever.

5 Ways to Recycle a Compact Flourescent Lamp CFL

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) despite its lower energy consumption and lower prices in the US, only 6 % of the US households have CFL in their home. One of the major stumbling blocks for the user to accept CFL is its mercury content.
CFL contains as much as 5 milligrams of Mercury per bulb, but many don’t realize the regular fluorescent lamps have higher mercury content than CFL and we have been dumping these lamps into dumpsters and waste places mercilessly. We shouldn’t do the same for CFL.

It becomes imperative for the user to dispose the CFL properly; otherwise the mercury content will pollute the water sources and the environment in large numbers. It is estimated by 2010, the US alone will have 80 to 100 million CFL bulbs that will be disposed improperly. Hence, recycling becomes essential for CFL. So, if you use CFL at homes and are trying to find suitable places to recycle, this article gives the list of places to recycle your CFL

1. Your local garbage service.

Most of the local recycling companies may offer CFL recycling also, so you can contact them and place the bulbs along with the newspaper waste. If not they may have special collection centers for CFL disposal.

2. Municipal government.

Besides the local garbage service, the local government (city, county) will have special collection centers, so contact them in the special blue pages in the phone directory and find out where the centers are located.

3. Retailers.

Usually the large CFL sellers such as Wal-Mart and Home Depot should have a special recycling place, but they don’t, hopefully they will have it soon. If not try your local IKEA shop, which has free take-back program. Here is a link for petitioning the Wal-Mart to have a CFL recycling program at their stores.

4. Earth 911

Earth 911 is probably the United States and Canada's largest online clearinghouse of recycling information. You can check their site and find a local recycling center for CFL. Earth 911 is trying to expand their program to Europe as well.

5. Commercial Services

There are a variety of for-profit companies which provide CFL and fluorescent bulb disposal by mail. One of them is Lightbulbrecycling.com. They sell a special recycling kit, where you can store your used CFL bulbs, once it fills the special drum; it has a free postage paid option with FEDEX. It costs $120 for the recycling kit. This option is good if you have no other recycling centers available, it is better to be stored safely until it is disposed properly.

If you have no other options, then store in a sealed PVC container until you find proper disposable place. Keep them at a safe place in a good storage bag, so it doesn’t get broken, dropped or crushed. Also, contact your neighbors and collect the used CFL as a group and dispose them properly, you could add this activity in your social and religious meetings.

If you haven’t purchased CFL and still thinking about it, you should start using CFL, it has more potential benefits than regular lamps. It saves a lot of power in your home, when you have more rooms, the savings will be immediate. For more information on how to choose the CFL, see this article here.

Do you use CFL? How do you dispose your CFL?

Would free public transportation work?Would free public transportation work?A Canadian publication called The Tyee says free public transport could wo

A Canadian publication called The Tyee says free public transport could work and help the environment in a big way. Public transportation can be covered by taxes, which only adds a little compared to enormous environmental benefits it brings.
The Tyee, a Canadian publication, says instead of charging more for public transportation, giving way free rides, offers plenty of environmental benefits. There might be a small increase in taxes which would be hardly noticeable compared to the savings gained by the public by not using their own vehicles. There won’t be any tickets to print, and fewer staff would be required.

The main environmental benefits of free public transport are the following:

• Reduces greenhouse gas emissions with lesser cars and vehicles
• Reduction in air pollution and smog
• Reduction in noise pollution and congestion
• Reduction in overall consumption of oil and petrol/diesel
• Reduces litter with free tickets, no printing costs
• Saves trees from printing additional tickets
• Reduces spending billions on highways and roads
• Reduces spending on parking spaces especially in cramped cities

And there are more benefits you can find here.

Free public transportation has already been successfully implement in Belgium in Hasselt and is still going strong after 10 years in service.

In Hasselt in 1995, politicians realized public transportation was a mess. Even though buses covered a wide area (500,000 km), there were only fewer passengers. So, Hasselt city council presented this ambitious project to their transport company De Lijn. Their former mayor and late minister Steve Stevaert launched free bus service on July 1, 1997.

The project became an immediate success. Before the launch, there were only 1,000 passengers a day, and the system now attracts more than 12,600 passengers a day. Also, there are more buses and shuttle services covering almost the entire town, so one can move from one part of the town to other without hassle.

With the success in Belgium, will other cities and countries follow this success story? If there is good and fast public transport within the city, I would bet many people would ride it instead of their cars (even for a small fee).

In many places across North America, public transport is inadequate at best. One cannot go from one area to the other without a car. Would you like a free public transport in your city or do you still prefer to take a car to work?

171 billion gallons of fresh water to produce 41 billion gallons of bottled water

Factories worldwide are using more than 18 million barrels of oil and up to 171 billion gallons of water to create 41 billions of fresh water. Bottled water consumption is growing at a rate of 10 per cent every year.
According to a Oregon State University study, the consumption of bottled water in America has gone up 2,000 percent between 1978 and 2006, with over 700 brands of bottled water. It is one of the popular products in the market with high profit margins.

To make 41 billions of fresh water, factories use more than 18 million barrels of oil and up to 130 billion gallons of water just to create the plastic bottle and then addition 41 gallons of water to fill the empty bottles. And most of the water that is used to fill the bottles comes from tap water and only a percentage of them comes from actual spring. Even Pepsi admitted that they use tap water to fill their bottled water.

Todd Jarvis, assistant professor in the Water Resources Graduate Program at Oregon State University, and a research hydrogeologist with the OSU institute for water and Watersheds said bottled water is a big business in the tune of $100 billion per year, the profit margins is so huge, everyone wants to participate but at the cost of environment. He said in the article that once his students know the practices behind the bottling industry they just try to avoid purchasing bottled water.

There have always been, and still are some places in the developing world where bottled water is necessary for health concerns and relief efforts,” Jarvis said. “But in most of the world it was a niche item until the 1970s, when Perrier spent millions on advertising, and the industry just took off. It hasn’t looked back since, and now in America we’re spending $20,000 every minute of every day on bottled water.”

Coca-Cola and Pepsi make more money selling bottled water than selling their colas drinks. Jarvis said initially bottled water was all for health reasons but now it is just convenience, taste and has become a fashion for some just to carry bottled water around.

Jarvis said most of the bottled water has tap water, which normally costs 5 cents a gallon but when sold in bottles costs $4 a gallon. No wonder all the big corporations want to jump into this industry.

In the United States, the tap water is among the safest in the world, they have excellent water filtration systems. So, Jarvis says there is no need for bottled water in the US, maybe when traveling abroad.

Another factor the article points out is the tap water undergoes more scrutiny than bottled water because the Food and Drug Administration considers water as a food and has to pass through rigorous standards. Whereas bottled water is not, so anyone can sell bottled water, some of the bottled water contains contaminants even and there is no correlation between safety and bottle water consumption in the US according to Jarvis.

New York City has one of the safest water in the world, yet it consumes more bottled water than any other city in the world.

Everyone considers Spring Water as the safest and purest, but it still may have surface contaminants and still needs processing. Water from deep wells that municipal water supplies get from may be of same quality as spring water in some cases.

Bottled water has a different taste that may be one of its advantages, but if the tap water is filtered by Brita and Pur water filtering systems one can get similar taste as well. Or if they use some thing like LifeSaver bottle, one may get the same taste as spring water.

Also bottling water damages the groundwater supplies by heavy use to generate fewer gallons of fresh water. A high amount of oil and energy are used to create plastic bottles, plus they consume additional energy transporting the bottles to different location before and after bottling. There is too much plastic waste created even with recycling (only a fraction of bottles are recycled, others are thrown to waste). Also see here how much 1 bottled water needs energy and water to produce it.

“If people still want to drink bottled water, I usually recommend purified water, ‘rain’ water or well water from a nearby local source to provide the best combination of purity and environmental sensitivity,” Jarvis said. “But a reasonable alternative is just chilled tap water in a re-usable container. That often removes the chlorine taste that people complain about with tap water, it’s safe, and it’s a lot cheaper.”

I hope everyone listens to Jarvis and help save the environment. We lived without bottled water before, it didn’t kill us then, we survived. With just a few steps we can get the same quality at home.

Do you use bottled water?

How Peanut Butter helps the planet

Peanut Butter. Image Ref: Answers.com

According to the Peanut Butter and Jelly Campaign website, eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich helps saves the planet compared to eating a grilled cheese or chicken sandwich.
Different types of foods impacts differently on the environment. What might be the tastier ones may not be the best food for the environment. Peanut Butter & Jelly Campaign website says eating peanut butter & jelly sandwich is not only healthy, tasty but it is also good for the environment.

• If you eat a peanut butter & jelly sandwich instead of a grilled cheese or chicken sandwich, saves 2.5 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. That is half the amount you would have saved if you switch your car to a hybrid one.
• Peanut butter & jelly sandwich will save 280 gallons of water, since growing peanuts uses less water than a livestock.
• Growing peanuts also takes up a minimum land than raising animals in the farm; it needs more living space and grazing areas. Eating this peanut butter & jelly sandwich will help conserve 12 to 50 acres of land, which can be used for growing more peanuts or other crops.

Thus eating a peanut butter & jelly sandwich tastes good and costs less also compared to eating meats. Permafrog wrote a good article about the environment impact of eating meats.

Besides these sandwiches are healthier as long you don’t eat too much of it according to WebMD, an online health site. WebMD says peanut butter is high in fat content, but they are healthier fat types, helps the heart with their unsaturated fat. Peanut butter has plenty of good nutrition without the unhealthy trans fat content. However one should limit the amount of peanut butter intake to a two tablespoon portion size, which should be good enough for a sandwich.

Over 80% of the fat in peanuts comes from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats -- both kinds shown to be beneficial in lowering blood cholesterol levels.

In addition to being better for the environment, they’re also very healthy as long as you don’t eat too much.

FDA approved a health claim that says, "Diets containing one ounce of nuts per day can reduce your risk of heart disease," due to the overwhelming scientific research supporting the nutritional role of nuts.

Peanut butter offers an inexpensive solution for this; it has plenty of protein and healthy fats and packed with many nutrients such as Vitamin E, folate, niacin, copper, potassium, selenium, zinc, magnesium and fiber.

Try to add peanut butter to your diet, both ground and crunchy types offer the same kind of benefits. Just make sure you don't eat more than the maximum allowed, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter serving size.

What kind of peanut butter & jelly sandwich you like? Instead of jelly I use banana slices and honey, makes a great sandwich.

How to Register for 'National Do Not Call Registry'

National Do Not Call Registry Logo

Lawmakers have modified the laws in the “National Do Not Call Registry” application. Before a one time registration would have been sufficient, now the lawmakers have changed it to a five year period and members must register again after expiration.
Federal Trade Commission has introduced these changes and say it requires only a small fix. They claim some numbers changes hands and so this re-registration step is necessary. Not many are aware of it, without registration, they will be bombarded with telemarketing calls. So to avoid that follow these simple steps.

When you register for this “National Do Not Call Registry”, it prevents telemarketers to call your phone number at any time, if they violate they will face an $11,000 penalty. To register for this service visit the Do Not Call Registry and follow these steps.

STEP ONE: REGISTER YOUR HOME OR MOBILE PHONE NUMBER

• Enter up to three telephone numbers (home, mobile or office numbers)
• Enter e-mail address (for registration purposes only, you can set up a temporary e-mail address in GMail in case you are worried giving your e-mail address)
• Click “Submit” for Registration.

STEP TWO: MAKE SURE YOUR INFORMATION IS CORRECT

• Check any errors in your entries (phone number and e-mail address).
• If it is correct, then click “Register”, if you need to make changes then click “Change”
• Make sure you have the correct e-mail address, they need it for verification and that these numbers and e-mail address belong to you.

STEP THREE: OPEN YOUR EMAIL AND CLICK ON LINK

• Once you submit your phone numbers for registrations in the National Do Not Call Registry, you will receive an e-mail confirmation (one for every phone number registered).
• Open or click the link in the e-mail to confirm this registration.
• You must click this link within 72 hours otherwise you have to register again.

Since this registration requires once every five years, put this deadline in your calendar, so you can register again and not worry about telemarketing phone calls.

Secondhand Smoke Increases High School Test Failure

Don't smoke in front of children, affects academic performance. Image Ref: http://www.southbirminghampct.nhs.uk/

A new study in the Journal of Adolescent Health claims teens exposed to second hand smoking at home have a high risk of failing in schools compared to other teens not exposed to smoking.
Second hand smoking causes a variety of health problems, and now the researchers say it may affect academic performance as well according Bradley Collins, assistant professor of public health and director of the Health Behavior Research Clinic at Temple University.

The researchers analyzed data from 6,380 pregnant women and children from the 1958 British National Child Development Study. The researchers took other known risk factors into account such as socioeconomic status, gender, prenatal exposure to smoking and active smoking during adolescence period besides second hand smoking to evaluate this study. They found exposure to second hand smoking decreased the rate of passing the standardized achievement tests (SAT) by 30 percent in 16 to 18 year old age group.

The study also compared the effects of prenatal smoking exposure and second hand smoking exposure and found the later to have a significant effect on academic performance. The prenatal exposure did not influence much the test performance but that doesn’t mean the mothers should keep on smoking during pregnancy.

Collins said in the article:

It's important that we help smoking parents learn how to reduce their children's exposure to secondhand smoke, a goal that can be achieved without requiring the parent to immediately quit smoking, although that's the ultimate goal for the health of the entire family.”

The researchers found increasing similarities of smoking patterns between the United States and the United Kingdom. They found approximately one third of women in their childbearing years are smokers, 10 percent to 15 percent of women report smoking during pregnancy, and up to 60 percent of children may be exposed to smoke at home.

The study did not however find the cause of failure due to second hand smoking exposure. Collins is currently working on a study that is focused on reducing young children’s exposure to second hand smoking, breaking down behavior changes into smaller steps. He would like the parents to quit in totality but if they can’t they should find a place that exposes less second hand smoke to children.

Other authors in this study are Paul Wileyto from the University of Pennsylvania, Michael F.G. Murphy from Oxford University, and Marcus R. Munafò from the University of Bristol in the U.K.

There was an earlier study which showed the effects of second hand smoking on pets also, leading them to cancers and other ailments. The parents and adults should try not to smoke in front of children and pets.

German Man refuses 2 Million Euros Lottery money

A German pensioner won the €2 million ($2.77 million dollars) prize money in a lottery, but is refusing the cash. He says he doesn’t know what to do with it and wants the lottery association to keep the money.
The 70 year old German from Hameln, Lower Saxony won the lottery, but is not to keen on collecting the winnings. He claimed he got the ticket out of a habit because his late wife was a passionate player.

After he realized he was the winner of the €2 million lottery prize, he went to the German lottery association headquarters in Hanover and told them he doesn’t want the money.

He reportedly told them, he doesn’t know what to do with the money, since he has no living relatives near him. His wife is dead, parents are dead and he has no children and no other relatives.

Lottery officials are trying to persuade him to accept this lottery, if he doesn’t collect it, probably add it to the next lottery prize.

Unusual player, maybe he could have collected it and gave it to charity. He must be the first person in the world to refuse the lottery money.

Have you heard of such a thing?

Happy 25th Birthday, Smiley Emoticon

Smile emoticon

Today is the 25th anniversary of smiley emoticon, which was used for the first time twenty five years ago on 19th September, 1982. It was designed for the bulletin boards to differentiate the tone of message written, good or bad.
In 1982, computers were rudimentary, only the main colleges had computers and also were limited to certain departments and faculty. There was a bulletin board system, just like the social networks, but limited to the college or department. The users used to post messages on a variety of topics, daily news, goings on near campus, lost and found items, meetings announcements, groups, etc. However, there used to be lot of bickerings in the bulletin boards, many used to misinterpret the messages (a humorous message was misinterpreted as serious and vice versa) and they used to be very vocal and led to a lot of misunderstandings among them.

The committee in the bulletin board decided to do something about it, everyone suggested ideas to convey the emotions better in the messages. But no one came up with a good idea until Professor Scott Fahlman proposed a smiley face :-), which implies that the message written is a joke and a reverse sign :-( to indicate the message is a bad one, to indicate that a message was meant to be taken seriously. Though the reverse smiley symbol quickly became a sign to imply sadness, displeasure, frustration, or anger.

It is shown in the image below:

Soon after, every university started to follow this proposal and it spread worldwide. It was popularized in the Yahoo, MSN messengers initally, and now there are 100s of variations of this emoticon sign. Some used this smiley sign either with a hyphen or without it, but both meant the same.

When Fahlman announced that he discovered the smiley sign first, no one believed him, so he tried to get the original data. But since it was stored in tapes and not stored like the servers, it wasn’t easy for him to prove initially. He pressed on the search and with the help of the staff; he was able to dig out the first message shown above.

Thanks to Professor Fahlman, the Messenger talk became life like with the smiley emoticons, now there are more than 100 emoticons showing different human emotions. Now the messenger senses the above character signs and converts them to the popular round smiley face, but without the original smiley face, it wouldn’t have become prominent. Cheers to Smiley emoticon :-).

1 in 4 teens say meth is easy to get and is healthy

Meth use by kids. Image Ref: http://www.healthofchildren.com/

Nearly one quarter of teenagers believe the meth drug is easy to get on the streets and say it makes them feel very happy. In a study done by The Meth Project, some of the teens also said meth is healthy and helps them lose weight.
In a recent study by the Meth Project, is a nonprofit anti-drug group, results showed nearly one quarter of teens say meth is very easy to get. Also, one in three teens believe there is only a slight risk or no risk in trying meth once or twice.

The survey for The Meth Project was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media and interviewed 2,602 junior and high school students aged 12 to 17, in 43 schools across the nation.

About one quarter of the teens also said that doing meth has beneficial effects, saying meth makes them feel euphoric and very happy. About 22 percent of the teens said it helps them lose weight and similar number of people said it helps them deal with boredom.

This study prompted lawmakers and government officials to declare there should be more education about the dangers of drugs to these teens who think otherwise.

Dr. Julie Gerberding, head of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told MSNBC:
For kids, meth is death. And if we really want to do something about improving the survival of our adolescents and help them become healthy adults, we've got to tackle this problem head on.

Gerberding praised The Meth Project's two-year anti-meth ad campaign in Montana, which helped reduce meth use in the state by 45 per cent after it was launched in 2005. The ad shows graphic images showing the drug’s effect on young kids.

Gerberding said the kids need to be educated early on. The survey showed about 77 percent of the kids started doing meth when they were younger than 15 years old.

However, not all the feedback from the study was negative, as about 76 percent voiced strong disapproval with trying meth even once or twice.

Another survey done by the Health and Human Services Department showed meth use among teens nationally remained unchanged over the same period.

The White House drug czar, John Walters, said we have lot of work to do based on the survey. The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy began a meth prevention ad campaign earlier this month. The print and broadcast ads, including four produced by The Meth Project, will appear in eight states where meth use remains high: Alaska, California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Oregon and Washington. Walters said these prevention efforts are necessary and will help reduce the drug abuse.

In my opinion, the government effort in the war on drugs is laughable, as they don't do enough to stem drugs from coming into the country. Also, parents also have to play a vital part; if they teach kids from day one about the damages caused by drugs, it will no doubt help their children stay away from it.

Milky Way as seen from Death Valley, California

This is a beautiful picture I saw in the internet, a portion of milky way as seen from Death Valley, California. Click the below link to see a higher resolution image.

Ref: Wikimedia.

From Wikipedia about Milky Way Galaxy:

The Milky Way (a translation of the Latin Via Lactea, in turn derived from the Greek (Galaxias) sometimes referred to simply as "the Galaxy"), is a barred spiral galaxy which forms part of the Local Group, visible from Earth as a hazy band of white light that is seen in the night sky, arching across the entire celestial sphere. The visual phenomenon originates from stars and other material which lies within the galactic plane. [3] Although the Milky Way is one of billions of galaxies in the observable universe,[4] the Galaxy has special significance to humanity as it is the home of the Solar System. The Greek philosopher Democritus was the first known person to claim that the Milky Way consists of distant stars.

Cancer-Proof Your Body

The average mouse doesn't care much about skin cancer. Outside of Disney cartoons, you won't see one slathering on sunscreen before heading out to dodge cats and search for cheese. But Gary Stoner, Ph.D., a professor emeritus of hematology and oncology at the Ohio State University medical center, does care about cancer. That's why he spends his days in a lab, feeding rodents polyphenols from seaweed and learning how to shrink skin cancer–like tumors. He's a mouse's best friend. Maybe yours, too.

Stoner is just one of many researchers working to bring new weapons to the cancer battle. Some study humans to take a fresh look at existing theories. Others, like Stoner, are testing tactics so bold that, so far, their only subjects have tails and whiskers.

But all these approaches (seaweed included) have one very positive thing in common: They're just plain good for you and bad for cancer cells. Here are eight strategies that just may turn the Big C into the Big See-Ya-Later. (Or, better yet, See-Ya-Never.)

Drink Pomegranate Juice

Some say this luscious, lusty red fruit is Eve's original apple, but what the pomegranate truly banishes is cancer risk. The fruit's deep red juice contains polyphenols, isoflavones, and ellagic acid, elements researchers believe make up a potent anticancer combo. It's been shown to delay the growth of prostate cancer in mice, and it stabilizes PSA levels in men who've been treated for prostate cancer. And now University of Wisconsin at Madison researchers have learned that pomegranate may also inhibit lung-cancer growth. If you currently smoke, have smoked in the past, or hang around in smoky places (Cleveland, for instance), the juice of the fruit could bolster your defenses.

Use it: The mice in the Wisconsin study received the human equivalent of 16 ounces of juice per day, so quaff accordingly.

Eat Blueberries

Got pterostilbene? Rutgers University researchers say this compound -- found in blueberries -- has colon cancer-fighting properties. When rats with colon cancer were fed

a diet supplemented with pterostilbene, they had 57 percent fewer precancerous lesions after 8 weeks than rats not given the compound did. Eat blueberries and you'll also benefit from a big dose of vitamin C (14 milligrams per cup). In a study of 42,340 men, New England Research Institute scientists discovered that men with the highest dietary vitamin C intake (as opposed to supplements) were 50 percent less likely to develop premalignant oral lesions than men with the lowest intake were.

Use it: "About two servings daily is the human equivalent of what we fed the rats," says Bandaru Reddy, M.D., Ph.D., a chemical-biology professor at Rutgers. Load up at breakfast: A cup and a half of blueberries over cereal, plus 8 ounces of juice and half a grapefruit (for extra vitamin C), will do the trick. If that's too much to stomach at dawn, spread it out over the course of the day.

Relax a Little

Anxiety won't only make you soil your shorts. Purdue University researchers tracked 1,600 men over 12 years and found that half of those with increasing levels of worry died during the study period. Talk about flunking the exam. Only 20 percent of the optimists died before the 12-year study was completed. More anxiety-producing news: Thirty-four percent of the neurotic men died of some type of cancer. How neurotic are we talking? "Think of the biggest worrier you know -- someone who stresses out over everything," says psychologist Daniel Mroczek, Ph.D., who conducted the study. "That man is probably above the 95th percentile in neuroticism. Then think of the most cool, calm, collected man you know. He's probably below the fifth percentile."

Use it: To develop that critical, casual Jeff Spicoli vibe, learn to slow down your fast times: "The more time you spend in the present moment, the more relaxed you'll be, because most mental anguish occurs over stuff that's already happened or that may or may not happen in the future," says Claire Wheeler, M.D., Ph.D., the author of 10 Simple Solutions to Stress. "For the most part, right now is pretty damn good. If you practice being present while shaving, for example, eventually you'll also be more present when eating, making love, and working."

Pop Selenium

Selenium has long been thought of as a cancer fighter, but you can have too much of a good thing, says David J. Waters, Ph.D., D.V.M., director of the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation, in West Lafayette, Indiana. A study of almost 1,000 men, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that when those with the lowest initial levels of selenium in their bodies received a daily supplement over a 4 1/2- year period, they cut their prostate-cancer risk by an impressive 92 percent. But men who started out with high selenium were rewarded with an 88 percent increase in total cancer risk when they took the supplements. Moral: It pays to get your selenium level right.

Use it: Selenium in the body is measured through toenail clippings. Send yours to the Murphy Foundation, and for less than $100 (price varies by state), they'll ship them to a lab and then inform you of your level 2 weeks later. If yours is out of range, the foundation will explain how to adjust your intake of Brazil nuts, tuna, meats, grains, and selenium supplements. Learn more at www.seleniumhealthtest.com.

Order Sushi

As mentioned, Gary Stoner is using seaweed to fight the Big C. When he fed the polyphenols from brown seaweed to mice that had been bombarded with UV rays, their incidence of skin tumors dropped 60 percent. And the polyphenols shrank existing tumors by 43 percent. Better still, the doses that produced these effects were the equivalent of only 1 or 2 tablespoons in a human being. "Seaweed is low in calories and fat, yet it provides heart-helping fiber, bone-building calcium, and iron," says nutrition consultant Molly Morgan, R.D., C.D.N., owner of Creative Nutrition Solutions, in Vestal, New York. "Dried, roasted seaweed sheets used in making sushi also provide vitamins A and C."

Use it: "Eat more sushi rolls," says Stoner. "It's not quite the same seaweed, but it has some of the same compounds." As a bonus, sushi itself is a great muscle food. A typical spicy tuna roll has only 290 calories but packs 24 grams of protein. Also, look for a Korean-made, seaweed-fortified drink called EntroPower (entropower.com), which should be hitting U.S. health-food stores soon.

Spend More Time Outside

Scientists have viewed vitamin D as a potent cancer fighter for decades, but there's never been a gold-standard trial -- until now. A Creighton University study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that women who supplemented their diets with 1,000 international units of vitamin D every day had a 60 percent to 77 percent lower incidence of cancer over a 4-year period than did women taking a placebo. "I don't think the effect is limited to women," says Joan Lappe, Ph.D., the lead study author. "Vitamin D is necessary for the best functioning of the immune system -- it causes early death of cancer cells."

Use it: Nature intended us to make vitamin D from the sun, but depending on where you live, the time of year, and how much of an agoraphobe you are, you may not reach the optimal level of 80 nanomoles per liter of blood that way. A blood test can give you a baseline. From there, Lappe recommends supplementing with 1,100 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D in a stand-alone pill every day. Vitamin D is also in sardines, salmon, shiitake mushrooms, and reindeer meat -- which may explain Santa's longevity, despite the odd hours and jelly belly.

Clear Your Air

Secondhand smoke may be even worse for you than we thought. A recent American Journal of Public Health study reveals that nonsmokers working in smoky places had three times the amount of NNK, a carcinogen, in their urine than nonsmoking workers in smoke-free joints had. And their levels of NNK rose 6 percent for every hour worked. "There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke, and the greater the exposure, the higher the risk," says the study's lead author, Michael Stark, Ph.D., principal investigator for the Multnomah County Health Department, in Portland, Oregon.

Use it: Nine states have banned smoking in all workplaces, bars, and restaurants: Arizona, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Washington. So change locations, change professions, or change the laws. As you sip your pomegranate juice, sign up with Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights at no-smoke.org.

Invest a Little Sweat Equity

Study after study has pointed to the cancer-beating power of exercise. Now research from Norway has found that even a tiny dose of exercise has big benefits. A study of 29,110 men published last year in the International Journal of Cancer shows that men who exercised just once a week had a 30 percent lower risk of metastatic prostate cancer than did men who didn't work out at all. Increasing the frequency, duration, and intensity of the exercise correlated with a further, gradual reduction in risk.

Use it: Just one bout of weekend warriorism -- a company softball game, pickup basketball, racquetball with your crusty uncle -- might qualify you for inclusion in the cancer-free 30 percent.

Burglar says TV Show taught him how to rob homes

It Takes a Thief - TV show in Discovery Channel. Image Ref: http://content.ll-0.com/

A man said he learned to rob many homes by watching a Discovery Channel’s TV show “It Takes a Thief”. He was caught and sentenced to 12 years in prison for a series of burglaries in central Kentucky.
Michael W. Hobbs, 36 years old from Wacko, Kentucky, said the Discovery Channel TV show “It Takes a Thiefhelped him how to rob homes easily. The weekly show in Discovery Channel features two ex-convicts who show the home owners how easy it is to steal their home. It offers plenty of tips how to protect home, but shows the vulnerable areas in a home. Michael used the latter tips to rob homes.

Police Maj. Steve Gregg said the ex-convicts in the show used to point out and say skilled burglars typically don’t keep stolen items at their home. Michael did the same, so whenever they interviewed him, he used to tell the police to feel free and search his home.

Michael however made a recurring mistake, he used to show up at the home he planned to steal and ask them whether any repair work needs to be done. That give him away and he was caught finally.

He pleaded guilty to five counts of burglary, and the court sentenced him to 12 years in prison.

Now he can watch “Prison Break” inside prison and plan an escape. I saw this show it is real informative for home owners, but also shows how easily they break into homes and what tricks they follow to break in, which I think was too informative for others to follow like Michael. Some online websites also have too much information for robbers to steal.

Swedish Study Claims Full Fat Milk Makes You Thinner

A Swedish study points out that drinking Whole Milk (Full Fat) dairy products are more likely to keep you thinner than low fat foods. It says daily consumption of full fat milk will help reduce obesity.
Researchers from Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute did a study and monitored more than 20,000 women whose dietary habits have been recorded since 1987.

The women had an average body mass index (BMI) of 23.7 at the beginning of the study. After ten years, the BMI results showed the women who consumed full fat milk or cheese had a lower BMI than the rest of the group.

The researchers recommend a glass of full fat milk every day to help cut weight gain by 15 per cent. Researchers also said one portion of full fat cheese per day cut weight gain by 30 per cent.

Alicja Wolk, professor at Karolinska Institute, to Svenska Dagbladet told The Local:
The surprising conclusion was that increased consumption of cheese meant that overweight women lost weight.

I hope researchers here can confirm the same findings, as whole milk is much better than low fat milk. If there is natural milk obtained from grass-fed cows (and without all the processing) maybe this study is true?

But with all the dairy processing and animal feed for cows, the results may show different in North America.

Here in North Carolina, getting natural milk directly from cow farmers is illegal; it has to be processed first.

Here is a good article, you might like to read they have done studies about Milk and obesity and health benefits for milk.

Why milk?
We all know that the calcium in milk helps build strong bones, but milk is loaded with eight other essential vitamins and minerals.

* Calcium: Helps build and maintain strong bones. It's also vital for nerve function, muscle contraction, and blood clotting.
* Protein: Important for a number of bodily functions — vital to brain development and the growth of body tissues.
* Vitamin A: Maintains normal vision and skin. Helps regulate cell growth and integrity of the immune system.
* Vitamin B-12: Essential for the growth and health of the nervous system. Linked to normal activity of folic acid and is involved in blood formation.
* Vitamin D: Promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and influences bone mineralization, the strengthening of bones.
* Potassium: Regulates the body's fluid balance and blood pressure. It also is needed for muscle activity and contractions.
* Phosphorus: Helps generate energy in the body's cells and influences bone mineralization, the strengthening of bones.
* Niacin: Keeps enzymes functioning normally and helps the body process sugars and fatty acids. It is also important for the development of the nervous system.
* Riboflavin: Helps produce energy in the body's cells and plays a vital role in the development of the nervous system.

Milk and its Role in Weight Loss
Can Milk Help Me Lose Weight?

Studies suggest that including 24 oz. of fat free or lowfat milk every 24 hours as part of a reduced-calorie diet may help people lose more weight and burn more fat than cutting calories alone.

Robot Quadruped - crab crawler doubles up as night intruder alert

Robotic Quadruped - Guards home

The Robotic Quadruped from Hammacher Schlemmer is an autonomous crab like device that crawls around the home and sense any intruder movements and alert if detected. It costs $89.95.
The Robotic Quadruped electronic gadget, available from Hammacher Schlemmer, is an autonomous crab like device that can be used for intruder alerts and alarms at home for a low cost. The gadget has a set of low light LEDs and a sound sensor to help locate movements and gives an alarm if intruder is present.

The robot can operate autonomously, using integrated sensors to scan for and react to moving objects and to determine in which direction and how quickly it moves, and the robot's levels of awareness, aggression, and activity can be set to low, medium, or high, allowing manipulation of its scanning activity, interactive capabilities, and "personality."

The robot is able to move forward and backwards easily and each of the four legs can rotate or swivel 360 allowing diverse change of direction and movements. The head with LED’s light mounted on the robot is able to pan and tilts and scan the surroundings. The device can be remote controlled also.

It has two sensors LED lights, which work well under darker environments and sound sensors able to detect any sudden disturbance and move quickly towards the disturbance and gives an alert.

The robot requires four C batteries and remote uses three AAA batteries.

Sounds like a good investment for homes without an alarm system. Hope they add another feature to this bite the intruders.

Do you want to search maps, find a picture, translate a word, search Wikipedia, Dictionary, Thesaurus, all from the browser itself? Then the answer is HyperWords in Firefox. HyperWords is a free tool that does all this with just a click of the mouse.

Here the video demonstrates how HyperWords works and you will see how easy it is and makes us more productive when browsing.

When we browse the web pages for blogs, news sites, we usually want to know more to find the meaning of certain words, or to understand more about the topic keyword from Wikipedia, Google etc. In some cases we would like to translate the words in our languages. Doing all these functions, we usually open a new browser window and search for the additional information. To avoid this extra step you can use HyperWords.

HyperWords is a simple Firefox utility that does all the above with ease from within the browser window itself. It is a free Firefox extension tool you can download from here.

With HyperWords, you just select any plain text in the web page as shown below and then you can have a variety of options. In this example suppose you want to see the picture, you will have options to see from either Google or Flickr. Once you choose the option, it will show pictures of that particular word.

I used to do the above with Google Toolbar, I just used to select the word and click the appropriate button to see more information about it. HyperWords is a new one and they are slowly adding more services to it, so it will be a good one to use along with Google Toolbar.

Try the translate feature after you download it will change the words into the translated language in the browser itself.

HyperWords is available only for Firefox, not for IE, Opera and other browser types.

To make this work: Just install this HyperWords Firefox extension and restart your Firefox browser.

Happy 10th Birthday Google!

Larry Page and Sergey Brin started Google search engine 10 years ago on September 15th, 1997 and already has become a global force in business to reckon with. It is now the major dominant search engine in the Internet.
Page and Brin were 24 year old post graduate Stanford students at that time when they registered their domain name Google on September 15, 1997. Tomorrow will be their 10th birthday based on that date. They incorporated Google however on September 7, 1998. Some say, they should call the later date as the official date, but I think the registration of the domain name on the internet that has created a revolution in the web, that should be the appropriate date.

The word Google was derived from “GOOGOL” which means 10 to the power of 100, a large number, and Google itself has grown to that stature in the Search engine, Advertising, E-Mail (GMail), Videos (YouTube, Google Video) categories. Even the dictionary has started using the word “Google” as verb now.

Google is planning to celebrate this anniversary with a number of events and will announce it soon according to ZDNet.

There were other search engines before Google such as Yahoo and MSN but Google just pulled away from both of them and many others with its deep search and rapid display of results.

If they look Google now for the first time, no one will believe it was just started 10 years ago. In another 10 years, it would have grown even more; it may be involved in mobile phones, internet, space sponsorship etc.

Happy Birthday Google, you have helped us immensely in a variety of ways and made us find interesting information which would have been impossible to find on our own. Grow as high as possible, just don't become evil like your objective says.

What do you think about Google’s influence on us so far, is it good or bad?

Say ‘cheese’, new Sony camera technology no smile no pictures

New Sony camera technology will take pictures only if you smile, no smile no picture

Sony is releasing new digital cameras with a new face detection technology called “smile shutter”, which will take pictures only if there is a smile present. The camera models incorporating this technology will have prices starting from $350.
Sony may have lost its lead to others in audio mp3 players, but in Digital cameras they still reign supreme with innovative cameras and advanced features. This new “smile shutter” feature is no different. The 8 Megapixel cameras DSC-T70 and DSC-T200 Cyber-shot series models won’t snap a high definition picture until the selected subject smiles.

Another innovative feature in the camera is it can focus on an individual from a handful of people in the view finder. By touching the object with the special pen, the camera will be able to focus and take the picture of that designated person only.

Sony Product Development’s Akira Tokuse said if there are parents and a baby in a group picture, by pressing the baby, the camera will focus and take the picture once it smiles.

The so-called "Say Cheese" technology has three setting levels for smiles; it varies from a slight grin to a belly laugh.

These new cameras are available in Japan for now, but global releases will follow soon.

Sony's smile technology joins Japan's Omron Corp, which developed "smile check" software that analyses happiness by facial features like mouth and eye wrinkles or lip separation.

If the subject doesn’t smile it won’t take a picture, you don’t have to waste a shot. It will be a good one to incorporate in the shopping mall Polaroid shooting. Wonder what it will do if we have to take a pictures of the nature, I hope they have a disable feature in the camera also.

Do you like this technology?

Stretch YouTube Videos To Fit the Browser Window, Better Than Full Screen

This is a tutorial how to watch the YouTube video in maximum size format and still be able to access others window applications and browser tabs. Currently watching YouTube video in maximum mode limits only the use of the video not any other programs.

In any YouTube vide, there is a button at the bottom of the video which enables us to watch the video either in regular size or to fit the whole computer screen. However the big problem when watching the video in full screen makes it impossible to access other functions in Windows. Of course you can pause it and hit the escape button, there is an alternate way that avoids this last step.

Here I posted the “Free Hugs campaign” video as an example. In the old way you can click the buttons at the bottom of the player to watch it in maximum size and hit escape button to access other application and browser tabs. The new way works as follows:

1. The URL link for this video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vr3x_RRJdd4
2. To fit this video in your browser window to the maximum do the following: http://www.youtube.com/v/VIDEO_ID, in our example it will be http://www.youtube.com/v/vr3x_RRJdd4.
3. When you click the last link, you will get the maximum size video in your browser.
4. Another advantage with this step, when you resize the browser the video also changes proportionally. No need to hit the escape button anymore, you can multi task when browsing the web.

Give it a try; it is much better experience than the full version.

Google SMS Adds Location-Based Personalization

Google SMS

Google has added a great short cut for Google SMS in which the user can set personalized location and get specific search results for your queries. Once the location is set, just SMS the query and Google SMS gives the answers specific to your location.
Google SMS is a very useful service; you can send your text query to GOOGLE or 466453 and receive instant and fast answers. You can find local businesses (food places or cafes), get directions, check the weather, find phone numbers etc with Google SMS.

The problem until now, Google doesn’t know your exact location, so usually it gives generalized results which may not be useful for us, especially when we are seeking specific local results. But with this new personalized location feature in Google SMS, this problem is overcome.

For example, in the old method with Google SMS, we have to type the following to locate movies in a nearby area

Movies “City Name” “Zip Code”

But with the new method all you have do is type “Movies” because Google remembers your zip code and gives results of movies and theaters (including their phone numbers) near your zip code.

To set this personalized location for your mobile phone, do the following:

1. Send an SMS to 466453
2. Type Set “Location” - instead of location, type in your zip code. E.g. Set 27601
3. Google will send a confirmation message. After this you don’t have to type any zip codes or city name, unless you are visiting in a different city

Once the location is set, now you can just type “weather” to Google, instead of “weather 27601”.

Here are some of the queries you can get quick answers with examples.

• Local: sushi 94040
• Weather: weather boston
• Glossary: define zenith
• Sports: score red sox
• Movies: movies 94110
• Stocks: stock tgt
• Zip Codes: zip code 72202
• Directions: directions pasadena ca to 94043
• Maps: map 5th avenue new york Flights**
• flight: aa 2111
• Area Codes: area code 650
• Products: price ipod player 40gb
• Q&A: abraham lincoln birthday
• Airlines: united airlines
• Translation: translate hello in french
• Web Snippets: g hubble telescope
• Calculator: 1 us pint in liters
• Currency Conversion: 8 usd in yen
• Airports: sfo airport Help

Google SMS is available in the following countries besides US, Canada, Germany, Japan, Spain at http://google.com/sms. However the above new feature is available only in the US, but will be released soon in other countries. If you are away from your computer but you need quick answers this Google SMS is the best one.

Apple planning to bring iPhone to Europe

iPhone with Deutsche Telekom's TMobile? Image Ref: http://images.macnn.com/

Apple Inc is planning a London news conference next Tuesday, speculation abounds that Apple might start launching iPhones in Europe with mobile phone companies such as O2, T-Mobile, and Orange in various countries in Europe.
Engadget reported that they had a copy of invitation for the Apple news conference next Tuesday indicating there might be a launch of iPhones in Europe.

Yahoo also reported the same and said Apple might work with Spanish Telefonica’s O2 UK unit and launch iPhones in UK. Apple will do the same in Germany with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile and with France Telecom’s Orange in France. All three telecommunication companies might have exclusive deals like the one Apple has with AT&T in the US. However, Telefonica, France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom have maintained a strict silence about any deal with Apple.

Apple has not released the Europe launch details in its site or said anything in public, has kept silent so far.

Apple probably wants to release them in Europe as soon as possible, so it can get a head start in Europe for the holiday season. Apple might get a share of data and voice revenues from the mobile phone companies, so that is another reason for the price reduction in iPhones recently. Thus, Apple will get revenues from the mark ups in the device, the music and video sales in iTunes, a share in the data and voice revenues from the telecommunication companies. No wonder iPhone is a cash cow for Apple.

Apple sold its one millionth iPhone recently, when it launches in Europe the figure will skyrocket even more. Its goals to sell 10 million iPhones by 2008 will become a reality soon.

Bottle makes dirty water drinkable in an Instant

The Life Saver bottle, which can clean up the dirtiest water being demonstrated. Ref: Daily Mail

Michael Pritchard discovers a “Life Saver” bottle that will convert the most impure water into clean potable water in seconds. The bottle sells for £190 and has become a big hit in London. Military is keen to buy this technology from him.
Michael Pritchard runs a water treatment business in Ipswich, England. Pritchard came up with this novel idea after he watched the Tsunami disaster, seeing how people suffered to get clean water. So he tried to create a simple product that will filter water quickly and safely. He worked hard the next few months after a few failed prototypes; he came up with this “Life Saver” bottle design.

Pritchard launched this new product at the DESI defense show in London yesterday, soon after he sold out his entire 1,000 stock. Even the military has taken notice and wants his product. It will boost the military’s needs to provide clean water in large volumes without changing a filter.

In July a prototype of the bottle was voted "Best Technological Development" at the Soldier Technology conference.

Advertisement for Life Saver Bottle.

The filters that are currently used in water treatment can remove bacteria measuring more than 200 nanometers in size, but not the viruses which are 25 nanometers in length. Pritchard’s “Life Saver” bottle has filter that can cut out any particles or viruses that are longer than 15 nanometers. So it effectively cleans any dirty water and makes the water drinkable in seconds.

Here is more technical information from the main web site.

The price seems to be high but it will be good to carry along when traveling foreign countries or when visiting camps and outdoors. A similar design done in a larger scale can provide clean water quickly in disaster areas and poorer regions who can’t afford water treatment plants.

I wrote another article in June where Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen produced a water filter gadget for $3.

Puppy Love and Heartbreak in Denver

A male chow mix laid down in the middle of a busy street this morning to keep watch over its companion, a female German shepherd mix, after it was hit and killed by a car. Steven R. Nickerson © The Rocky

In the middle of a busy street in Denver, a male chow mix dog sat itself next to its dead companion, a female German shepherd mix, which was killed by a car. It kept watch over its dead companion.
The male chow mix and the female German shepherd mix were spotted together recently the last few days and were prowling the streets in Denver. This morning the female German shepherd mix got hit by a car and died immediately after in the busy streets of Chambers Road near East 52nd Avenue in Denver. The male chow mix then sat down next to this dead dog to keep watch over its companion.

The Denver Animal Care & Control think both are stray dogs. They didn’t have any identification tags attached to them. Doug Kelly, its Director said, when a companion dies, the dog usually sits next to them and guards the dead dog. It is however uncommon to see them in the middle of the road. He thinks these two dogs might have been involved in a romance.

The animal control officials after being called by the police removed the dogs. Before that two good Samaritans helped the efforts by blocking the traffic in the lane in which the dogs were lying. Another one took the surviving dog to the median so it won’t get hurt also.

Bill Taylor, Patrolman said he tried to remove the dog himself, but the male dog didn’t want him to get close to the dead dog, it seemed to be upset. The dog was also not real friendly with the animal control staff, but they finally took the dog to the nearest shelter. If the dog persists with this behavior it will be difficult for them to give it for adoption, so probably might need some dog training. Maybe the dog was upset because of the death of its companion, might show good behavior later on.

To find more information about this dog or any dogs you like to adopt in the Denver area, click this link. If you want to raise dogs, check the nearest dog shelter, they also have good number of dogs. If the dogs are not adopted usually they are put to death, the shelters claim lack of funds as one the main reasons for it, so do the right thing.

Dogs show unusual behavior, but this is not a surprise, they are more emotional than other animals. Check this story also; the Japanese have a statue for a dog because of its undying love for its master.

Philosophy from Calvin and Hobbes

I love Calvin and Hobbes, I felt really disheartened when Bill Watterson decided to stop that cartoon series. During my school days I used to read the sports news first, and during my college days I read the cartoons first and mostly I started with Calvin and Hobbes.

But one thing I noticed recently is it has a philosophy.

If you don’t know the answer, just say “no”, don’t be a knuckle head.

Be diplomatic even with an enemy.

Do you notice this also?

Here are two good sources for Calvin and Hobbes if you guys like to check.

Thruster May Shorten Mars Trip from Months to Week

Young Bae's photonic laser thruster (Photo courtesy Bae Institute)

Young Bae’s amplified photon thruster could possibly shorten the trip of future missions to Mars from the current six months duration to just a week. This technology has reportedly attracted the attentions of NASA, DARPAR and other aerospace agencies.
Dr. Young Bae is the founder of the Bae Institute in Tustin, California, which develops space technologies and has worked on photon, antimatter and fusion propulsion technologies for the past twenty years. Dr. Bae has developed an amplified photon thruster, a patented product that will revolutionize space travel especially to Mars.

He first demonstrated his technology, the photonic laser thruster (PLT) built from off the shelf products, since no existing products are available for this technology. He was able to produce a photon thrust of 35 µN in a small scale but could be replicated with a higher thrust value for future space missions. Some of the applications for this product include the following: highly precise satellite formation flying configurations for building large synthetic apertures in space for earth or space observation, precision contaminant-free spacecraft docking operations, and propelling spacecraft to unprecedented speeds -- faster than 100 km/sec.

With the high potential speeds from this PLT, spacecrafts equipped with PLT technology could travel the 100 million kilometer distance to Mars in less than a week’s time.

Young Bae, founder of the Bae Institute (Photo courtesy Bae Institute)

Many aerospace organizations have shown keen interest for this PLT and want to collaborate with Dr. Bae in developing civilian, military and commercial space vehicles. He has also been invited to present his work for NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), DARPA and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).

Franklin Mead, a senior aerospace engineer at AFRL, said in a Bae Institute statement that the PLT demonstration and the measurement of photon thrust are very novel and incredible, something that has not been done before.

Dr. Bae has also published a paper, “Photonic Laser Propulsion: Proof-of-Concept Demonstration”, in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets. He has outlined how he was able to overcome the traditional inefficient photon thruster designs and able to create this novel PLT method.

He said in the report:

"In contrast, Bae’s PLT (patent pending) places the laser medium within a resonant optical cavity between two platforms to produce a very stable and reliable thrust that is unaffected by mirror movement and vibration -- ideal for spacecraft control or propulsion."

His PLT research was partially funded with the help of the NIAC (NASA Institute of Advanced Concepts) as a part of a spacecraft formation flight concept grant.

It is a great start, once PLT is proven in a large scale model, it will be a revolution in space travel, the scientists can then plan missions without worrying about the time table, orbits etc. They can then send in supplies, people within short notices to Mars and back.

Google Docs mobile now available?

Google Docs Logo

Google is planning to have a mobile version of Google Docs application very soon. Once this feature is made available for public, then users can view the Google Docs application in their iPhone, Smartphones and other mobile devices.
There was recently a discussion in the Blogoscoped forums where users talked about this mobile version of Google Docs.

They found an interesting link that showed the mobile form of Google Docs, though that link doesn’t work now. It points to http://docs.google.com/m, which usually indicates a mobile form.

This is one image they saw, when they tried to access Google Docs in their iPhone. You can see the mobile link at the bottom of this picture.

If Google offers this mobile Google Docs, then it will be great news because so far only a few Office Suite offerings are available like Zoho. ZDnet ponders whether this will be made available only for iPhone. I think Google will make this available for all Java enabled phones, the new Palm Treo phones have Java programs built in.

No news yet whether this mobile Google Docs will be only read version or read/write version. If it is later type, it will be great to write documents on the go. With mobile Google Docs, you can write documents, edit spreadsheets, watch or edit slideshows. Till Google releases this version, you can try the mobile version of Zoho, which is equally good.

To Forget You

MilGracias Painting

A Persian Miniature Painting by Mrs. Ali Reza

To Forget You:

"They ask me (of you), "Can you forget her?",

Maybe, but they must remove my heart,

That reveres the sincere love of you,

Even if they cut my heart,

What they can do to my mind,

That thinks in earnest of you,

Even if they distort my mind,

What they can do to my eyes,

That pictures vividly every detail of you,

Even if they remove my eyes,

What they can do to my words,

That sings the beauty of the many faces of you,

Even if they erase my words,

What they can do to my soul,

That flies with only one mission, the love of you,

Which is in no one's grasp but God's,

So I answer, ‘Sorry, my friend, I can never forget her’."

- Chris Veerabadran in Mil Gracias or A Thousand Thanks

Google Tells You What Time It Is

Google updated its OneBox results, where the users gets a variety of information such as maps, videos, weather, finance and other relevant information related to the query. Now they have added time information to its OneBox results.
When you type in a question “what time is it in paris”, Google will provide the actual time in Paris, France along with other cities named Paris as shown in the picture. It adds a dynamically-generated clock, the time zone and other possible matches.

You don’t have to type special commands to see this result, but if you type “Time City” it will give the results shown. There are other combinations you can also try to get these results:

time region/state (time queensland)
time country (time usa)
time in...
the time in...
local time in...
current time in...
what time is it in...
what's the time in...

The best answer to get for any question in Google is instead of typing the actual question “What is the time in Paris” do the following “the time in Paris is”, so this will force Google to see the actual terms. This way you will get the best answer, otherwise you will get a thousand possibilities.

Google Operating System says Ask.com also provides a good OneBox type of results, so when you type the same question, you will get the correct time in Paris, plus a map, current weather and other relevant information about Paris, France.

But if you want to check the times fast, try the Fox Clocks extension with Firefox, it gives times of various cities and synchronizes well with your computer clock.

Another good improvement from Google, they come up with one or more improvements a day, which is good for us.

Op-ed: You can't 'catch' autism from a play date

Lisa Dowler is a writer in Newsday.com and she shares one of her personal experience about her ten year old son, Jeffrey, who is autistic.

Jeffrey loves to play baseball, go bowling. He is a happy kid everyone loves him once they get to know him. Because of autism, which affects his social habits it is difficult for Jeffrey to form or maintain a friendship. But lucky for him, he has an understanding younger brother. Jeffrey however doesn’t get play dates from others, is one of things the parents must go through having an autistic child.

Lisa found out why she was finding it hard to get a play date for Jeffrey from other kids. She tried to find a new friend for Jeffrey, she saw a boy who was kind to his son, and went out of his way introducing Jeffrey as his friend to others. So, she was thankful for his support. She met her mom to convey the thanks.

Lisa introduced herself to this mom and talked about her son Jeffrey, how he is autistic and has special needs. She told her that their sons know each other from music, art and gym classes. She talked about whether they can become friends.

The mother however was not receptive, she was not too glad of her son becoming friends with Jeffrey. She acted as if her son will catch Jeffrey’s disability. Lisa was hurt but not with just this mom, but with moms like her.

Autism is not contagious, nor are the other conditions that land children into special-needs classes.

Both Jeffrey and this kid could have had a positive experience, would have helped them both. Lisa said when someone is around Jeffrey, they learn to become compassionate and understanding, which her younger son exhibits for Jeffrey and doesn’t feel threatened by his elder brother.

The mother, Lisa spoke to, didn’t want to pass the phone number and that is the last thing Lisa saw of her. Lisa said she receives similar responses from other moms.

Thanks to his young brother, Jeffrey has come a long way with the help of his brother, who has become kinder, sensitive and caring one. He feels proud and happy to help his autistic brother. He clearly understands that his brother is a good one and autism doesn’t define Jeffrey or any other autistic child.

Both Jeffrey and his young brother can teach a lot to the above reluctant mother and others, whose apathy takes them nowhere. It is brave of Lisa, she is a great mother, she and Jeffrey are better off from the ignorant mother.

Iceland Calls the Whale Thing Off

minkewhale.jpg

The government of Iceland announced last week that it will call off its controversial whale hunting practices. It is not because of persistent political pressures from outside but rather because of poor demand of whale meat and other whale products.
Iceland and Japan are the few countries who refuse to accept an international ban on commercial whaling. In 2006, Iceland said it will no longer adhere to the International treaty and issued permits for the commercial hunting of nine endangered fin whales and 30 minke whales.

Seven minke whales and seven fin whales have been killed so far, but Iceland is unable to sell the meat commercially, apparently one of its main buyers have withdrawn their purchase agreement with Iceland.

According to treehugger.com, Iceland said it will not issue whale-hunting quotas until market demand increases or it manages to get a license to export whale products to Japan, one of the largest markets for whale meat.

International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) who monitors the whale hunting in Iceland is happy with this news. Robbie Marsland from IFAW said in the press:

Whaling is cruel and unnecessary, and all of our studies have also shown there is little appetite for whale meat in Iceland or internationally.

Robbie said instead of whale hunting, Iceland can concentrate on Whale watching industry which generates more than $20 million in revenue each year. This will boost the image of Iceland.

iPhone Price Cut: 10 Reasons Why Apple Did It

Apple cut the iPhones prices few days ago from $599 to $399 after just two months of launch. Steve Jobs said the only reason Apple cut the price it wanted to sell as many iPhones for the coming holiday season. Others give different reasons.
Many were incensed after the price cut and Steve Jobs responded within a day and gave $100 credit to all the disgruntled customers who purchased iPhones earlier at a higher price. So, why did Apple cut the prices?

Business2.com comes with 10 different reasons for the price cuts from the various responses it saw in the various web sites. They are the following:

1. Sales are slowing, and a price drop will re-invigorate them. This is a market strategy commonly used and could be one of the main reasons for the price cut. It had a lot of buzz early on, but then Apple didn’t get the sales volume it had expected. So, cutting prices will help boost iPhone sales.

2. Other smartphones are entering the market and a $399 price tag kicks those where it hurts. Samsung, Palm, HP are all introducing new smartphones but at a relatively cheaper price, so with $399 entry iPhone will look like a good bargain.

3. iPhone is a classic platinum turkey -- a high-end phone that sells a million units rapidly but then quickly loses momentum. When iPhones were introduced it was off the shelves in a hurry, but now if you go to the same stores you can see plenty.

4. The new iPod touch was likely to undermine iPhone sales. This might be the last of the reasons for a price cut. iPod touch does most of what iPhone does, but if one can afford iPod touch, they sure can afford an iPhone for $100 more. Without a phone iPod touch is just another device, there are better Palm and HP devices with more functions.

5. Apple early adopters would have paid any price. $600 was just short term profit maximization for the launch. Every business has a profit motive, so it got its sales and profit as well with a high initial price.

6. Apple has reached a milestone that can justify a price cut. Development costs have been recouped. Initially Apple must have raised the prices to compensate the costs of research and planning, now since it must have recouped its costs, it may have reduced the prices.

7. iPod Touch and iPhone share certain parts, thus bringing manufacturing costs down for both products. With increased volume, it can demand cheaper price from its manufacturers and hence passes the savings to the customers in the form of price cuts.

8. Apple promised AT&T the price cut if they could offer the iPod touch this holiday season.

9. If Apple learned anything from the Mac war with Wintel, it was that maintaining hardware margins at the expense of market share was a mistake. Apple learned a lesson, next time their prices will never be high or low, and won’t give a price cut in the future. Because of all the complaints, it will be back to iPod strategy, maintain the same price without any discounts.

10. Clearing out inventory to make way for a 3G iPhone ASAP. This is also an unlikely reason for the price cut. There is a rumor about a 3G iPhone for European market, but the prices will high there compared to the US prices. If there is a 3G iPhone many will buy but some networks don’t have it, both types of phone are needed. There is a possibility iPhones with multiple networks options may be offered in the future.

Whatever the reasons, the price cut from iPhone is a good one; now many could afford it at $399 price.

Soy sauce gets the scoop on ice cream

Soy Sauce Ice Cream. Image ref: http://www.sugoodsweets.com/

A Japanese company has made a special product blend for ice cream, a soy sauce product. They claim they have sold plenty of this product in a short period and say the soy sauce blend tastes like caramel.
Soy sauce is a daily staple in Japan; you can find soy sauce in almost every product they consume. One Japanese company, Yamakawa Jozo, decided to find a way to add soy sauce for ice cream, even though they look like an unlikely combination from the start.

They created a special soy sauce blend for ice cream and they brewed this sauce more than eight years ago in wooden barrels blended with rice wine and starch syrup.

The company president Akio Yamakawa claims the product tastes like caramel when added in small portions to vanilla ice cream.

He may be right from the big sales of this special product; it has sold more than 6,000 bottles of soy sauce for ice cream since they started selling in January, with daily orders of 70 to 80 bottles. The ageing of the sauce might be one of the reasons for the popularity.

The 70-millilitre (2.1-ounce) bottle is priced at 350 yen (three dollars).

Ben and Jerry’s have tried different combination in their ice creams; I don’t know whether they even thought of adding soy sauce to ice cream. If anyone can introduce this soy sauce in ice cream in the US, they will be the one.

I checked to see whether there are similar recipes in the US, I found one, soy sauce sorbet here.

Have you heard of an odd combination that is used in Ice creams but still taste good? I am just comfortable with banana split with hot fudge sauce.

Windspire: 1 kW Wind Turbine for Your Backyard for $4,000

Windspire 1kW Turbine

Windspire offers a clean, renewable energy in the form of low cost Wind Turbines that can be easily installed in the backyard and reduce your electricity bills. A 1 kW Wind Turbines costs $4,000 dollars that can generate 2,000 kW hours per year.
Windspire Turbines are innovative in design with a bladeless rotor that can produce 2,000 kilowatt hours per year. It costs $4,000 for a 1 kW Wind Turbine rated unit that is easy to install and can be connected to a computer with a wireless modem and monitor its output. It produces enough power for an average home.

It is 30 foot tall and 2 feet wide, the propeller less design is relatively quiet, even at high speed it produces 25 decibels of noise at five feet, equivalent to the average noise of a residential neighborhood at night. An average turbine produces a noise level of 65 decibels or more, compared to that Windspire noise levels are less. It is bird safe, and it takes only a minimum wind speed to make it spin, an 8 mph wind is sufficient to make the turbine operate and can withstand wind speeds up to 100 mph.

The cost maybe high in terms of return on investment, at $4,000 and at 10 cents a kilowatt, it will take about 20 years to get any returns. But for an average home, it will meet all the power needs so one doesn’t have to pay utility bills.

Mariah Power who produce these Wind Turbines claims they are easy to maintain. The plastic rotor panels and inverter can be easily replaced if necessary.

Compared to relying on coal power this wind power is far better. If homeowners combine together, they can invest and provide electricity for their homes and sell the remaining to the power companies.

Mummy of girl sacrificed by Incans prompts gasps

The mummy "La Doncella" or "The Maiden" sits on display at the High Mountain Archeological Museum in Salta, Argentina. Ref: MSNBC

Museum-goers were astounded to see a well preserved mummy of an Inca maiden that is on display in a museum in Salta, Argentina. The girl was sacrificed 100 years ago and froze to death in the Andes Mountains.
The girl called “la Doncella” (Spanish for “the Maiden”) named by the Argentineans is on display for the first time at a museum in Salta, Argentina. The visitors after seeing her are person are two shocked to see this well preserved mummy. The “la Doncella” was sacrificed hundreds of years ago by the Incans.

“La Doncella” died on a volcano, at an elevation of 22,080 feet in the Andes Mountains. She was garlanded with bone and metal jewelry.

Her body was found in an ice pit in Llullaillaco volcano, and is estimated to be 15 years old. She was found along with a 6 year old and a 7 year old boy.

Scientists speculate that these children bodies were sacrificed more than 500 years ago in an Incan ceremony marking the annual corn harvest. They are dressed in fine cloths and given corn alcohol to make them sleepy, then the victims were then left in that condition to die at an elevation of 22,080 feet. The icy conditions must have caused a quick death.

The “la Doncella” is kept in a chamber that pumps chilled air through a low oxygen atmosphere. This simulates the subfreezing conditions where it was found. The other children are not on display but are being studied.

She is found seated with her legs bent and her arms resting on her stomach, she can be seen wearing a gray shawl and bone and metal ornaments. Scientists think her face was painted with a red pigment and around her mouth they found flecks of coca leaf, which are commonly used to cope with high altitudes.

Many visitors are flocking the museum to see this girl mummy.

High Mountain Archaeological Museum director Gabriel Miremont said on Thursday to CNN:

Just this morning we have had more than 700 people come see the exhibit, and we had hundreds yesterday when it opened".

Many Indian groups however were displeased with this exhibition of the mummy, they argue the mummies should be given proper respect and buried or at least not shown to the public.

Miguel Suarez, a representative of the Calchaquies valley tribes in and around Salta, said this exhibit is a great mistake.

I agree with him, she already suffered a cruel death and now to make an exhibit of her in front of thousands that is more disrespectful. Photos of her could be sufficient.

What do you think about this exhibit?

7 secretly healthy foods

7 secretly healthy foods

Some foods get a bad rap even when they don't deserve it. We lift the lid on seven foods that are better for you than you might think. Try our suggestions for smarter ways of eating them and you’ll realize that sometimes, the tastiest foods can also be really good for you.

Eggs

Cholesterol fears give eggs a bad rap. It has long been assumed that foods high in cholesterol translated into high cholesterol levels in our blood. Nutrition experts now know that for most people, the amount of cholesterol in a particular food usually has a minor effect on blood cholesterol. Other types of fats, including saturated and trans fats, have a much greater impact.

Why they’re healthy: Eggs are packed with nutrition. One egg has a mere 75 calories, yet contains 13 essential nutrients. Along with high-quality protein, eggs have choline, a compound considered critical for brain development and believed to influence lifelong memory and learning functions. Eggs also contain vitamin E, iron and zinc plus small amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin, two carotenes that support healthy vision and may help prevent age-related blindness.

Best ways to eat them: As close to au naturel as possible. When fried, paired with bacon and hash browns, topped with cheese or mixed into a salad with a heavy dollop of mayonnaise, eggs become accomplices to a high-fat, higher-calorie diet.

Instead, enjoy them scrambled, boiled or poached, mixed with veggies or chopped and tossed with a little light mayo. Partner with whole wheat toast, whole grain pilafs or fruit.

White potatoes

Many believe potatoes are nutritionally anemic junk food loaded with carbs. That may be true of french fries, but a whole white potato is a different story.

Why they’re healthy: Sure, they’re filled with carbohydrates, but that’s OK. Our bodies, especially our brains, need less-processed carbohydrates for energy. One baked potato contains 25 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C. Eat the whole potato (including skin) for a good source of B6, copper, potassium and manganese. Their high-fiber content helps slow digestion and provides a sense of fullness long after a meal is over.

Best ways to eat them: It’s the add-ons that do the damage. If you pick the right “accessories,” such as low-fat cottage cheese and snipped herbs or black beans and corn salsa, potatoes can become nutritional heavyweights. Try boiled potatoes diced and lightly brushed with olive oil, herbs and spices; mash them with the skins on; or bake and top with sauteed mushrooms and onions.

Pizza

Pizza is a nutritional chameleon, taking on the healthy or unhealthy attributes of its toppings. It can be a greasy fat-fest or vitamin-rich meal suitable for many diets.

Why it's healthy: In theory, a slice of pizza represents several food groups within the Food Guide Pyramid. With a whole-wheat crust, it provides a serving or two of whole grains loaded with antioxidants and phytonutrients, the plant-based compounds that help fight disease. The tomato sauce is packed with beta carotene, lycopene and vitamin C. If the pie is made with real mozzarella cheese, you get a healthy dose of calcium.

Pizzas can also be a great base to add highly nutritious vegetables, including red peppers, mushrooms, onions, broccoli and spinach.

Best ways to eat it: Whole-wheat crust is a must. Slather on tomato sauce and use a light hand when sprinkling on cheese and lean meat. Be generous with your veggie picks. If buying pre-made pizza, stick with whole-wheat crust and add additional veggies to the top.

Beef

The beef over beef is its fat content -- specifically the amount of saturated fat found in many cuts.

Why it’s healthy: One 3-ounce serving of lean beef contains 50 percent of the protein most people should get in a day and nearly 40 percent of the zinc and vitamin B12. Lean beef is a good source of selenium (a mineral linked with a reduced risk of some cancers), B6 and iron.

Best ways to eat it: Whether red meat gets a nutritional thumbs up depends on the portion size and the cut of beef. Keep portions to 3 ounces to 4 ounces of cooked weight. Choose cuts from the round or loin, such as top round, eye of round, top loin or sirloin, or try flank steak. Trim visible fat and marinate in flavorful low-fat sauces. To keep fat in check, grill, broil or bake beef, or cook it in broth or another low-fat liquid.

Sugary cereals

Sugared cereals are often called “crunchy candy” because the excess sugar content adds a heap of unnecessary calories.

Why they’re healthy: While some pre-sweetened cereals are overloaded with sugar, artificial colors and ingredients, other brands can provide 15 percent to 100 percent of the Recommended Dietary Allowance of several vitamins and minerals, including those that many people don’t get enough of: vitamin D, vitamin E, magnesium and calcium. Some pre-sweetened cereals can offer fiber and a serving of whole grains.

Best ways to eat them: Some diets advise two servings of cereal a day, but one bowl should be enough for most people.

The key to keeping these healthy is to pick brands with fewer ingredients listed. The first ingredient should be a whole grain such as whole wheat or rolled oats. Add your own fruit – strawberries, blueberries or bananas – instead of buying cereal already loaded with dried fruit (too sweet). Sugars listed on the nutrition label should be no more than 8-10 grams (8 grams = 2 tsps.) and offer at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. Drink the milk at the bottom of the bowl because some of the nutrients added to cereals leach out into the milk. If you try to cut calories by tossing the leftover milk, you’ll likely miss out on many of the nutrients that were added in.

Canned fruits and vegetables

Many people mistakenly believe that canned goods contain fewer nutrients than fresh produce.

Why they’re healthy: Canned fruits and vegetables are picked and packed at their peak ripeness, cooked quickly and sealed so nutrients are not lost. Several studies have found that the vitamin content in canned or frozen foods is comparable to fresh produce. Some canned foods such as tomatoes actually top frozen or fresh. With canned beans, the heating process may also make the fiber more soluble and useful to the body than dried beans.

Fresh foods can lose a significant amount of certain nutrients, such as vitamin C, after several days. Canned foods can hold on to their nutrients for up to two years.

Best ways to eat them: To keep nutrition locked in, store canned foods in a cool, dry location. Choose fruits packed in their own juices over those packed in syrups. Up to half the sodium in canned vegetables or beans can be washed away by rinsing under water.

Oysters

These mollusks may have a reputation for their love-enhancing qualities, but they're also shunned for being loaded with cholesterol and blamed for more than a few cases of food poisoning.

Why they’re healthy: Oysters are a lean source of protein and they contain omega-3 fatty acids. Six oysters have a total of 600 milligrams of omega-3s -- one-third of what’s recommended in a day. One serving has about 55 milligrams of cholesterol — one-fifth of what’s found in an egg and less than the amount in a chicken breast. For most people, the amount of cholesterol in a particular food usually has a minor effect on blood cholesterol.

Oysters are an exceptional source of zinc, an important immune system booster that also helps sharpen your sense of taste and smell. They’re also an abundant source of vitamin B12, copper, iron and selenium.

Best ways to eat them: Oysters can be purchased fresh, frozen or canned. Fresh or frozen is preferable because canned varieties are usually packed in oil or a water and salt solution. When buying live oysters, make sure the shells are tightly closed. They should smell like the sea, not sulfurous. They can be grilled, steamed or eaten raw. Some people, including children, pregnant women, older folks and those with a compromised immune system should avoid raw oysters because of the potential risk of food poisoning due to toxic bacteria.

Coal Will Destroy Us All

Coal Fired Power plant

Think You’re Making a Difference for environment? Think Again! For every effort the state, company, individual and the country makes to reduce Global Warming, a single or a few coal power plants will negate any positive things gained.
In the US besides the many existing coal-fired power plants there are 151 new conventional coal-fired power plants in various stages of development. Many are making conscious effort to help reduce global warming, but all those efforts will be futile from the Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the coal power-plant. China is another country which has more coal power plants coming up on a daily basis.

Home Depot is helping these environmental efforts by planting more than 300,000 trees in cities across the US to help absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. But the CO2 emissions from just only one medium sized 500 MW coal-fired power plant in 10 days of operation, will completely wipe that effort. It will produce more CO2 than what the trees can absorb.

Wal-Mart is another company helping the cause by investing a half billion dollars to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of their existing building by 20% over the next seven years. They also plan to have solar panels installed in their roofs to generate green energy. Again the CO2 emissions from just only one medium sized 500 MW coal-fired power plant in 10 days of operation will negate that effort.

The State of California passed legislation recently to cut CO2 emissions in new cars by 25% and in SUV by 18%, beginning in 2009. Even if every car and SUV met this condition in 2009, the CO2 emissions from one medium sized coal fired plant in just eight months of operation will negate this effort.

In every house, effort is being made to change the incandescent light bulb to compact fluorescent lamp. Even if all houses in the US did that, the CO2 emissions from two medium sized coal fired power plants each year will negate this effort.

THERE IS A ‘SILVER BULLET’ FOR SOLVING GLOBAL WARMING… NO MORE COAL!

All the positive efforts we are making will help the environment if and only if we stop using the coal power.

Over an 11-year period (1973–1983), the US built approx. 30 billion square feet of new buildings, added approx. 35 million new vehicles and increased real GDP by one trillion dollars while decreasing its energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

To meet this demand, we don’t need coal; we have efficient designs and proven technologies like Nuclear power, which has become safer than ever before. It causes considerably less pollution than coal fired power plants. If that is a problem we should invest more in wind power and solar power, but no big corporations or the US government is making any serious effort, only half hearted efforts as if they want the new technologies to fail and rely more on coal. About 76% of the all energy used in the US is produced in coal-fired power plants.

If no one wants to do anything about coal, whatever we do to help conserve energy is not going to save the planet. We could rather join and destroy ourselves.

Kid: What I learned from George Bush - Picture

At a rally presumably, a child holds up a sign to the public, what she has learned from the U.S. President George Bush. The kid says she learned from Bush that lying is Ok; cheating is OK among other things.
A Child holds the following poster in a public rally.

The message reads the following:

What I learned from Bush

1) Lying is OK
2) Cheating is OK
3) Torture is OK
4) Taking any people’s rights is OK
5) Neglecting the poor is OK
6) Being a religious hypocrite is OK
7) Killing is OK
8) Incompetence is OK
9) Cronyism is OK

A child holds up a sign of what she learnt from President Bush.

To see a bigger image of the above click here.

Some criticize it is only a child, but it doesn’t matter even if the sign is held up by an adult the message will ring true.

If we are asked to give examples to any of the above, we can easily fill in the blanks.

1) Lying is OK – “There are nuclear weapons in Iraq” claim that led to Iraq war
2) Cheating is OK – “Halliburton” swindling money in Iraq
3) Torture is OK – “Guantanamo Bay” prison
4) Taking any people’s rights are OK – No Amnesty rules for prisoners of war
5) Neglecting the poor is OK – Ignoring New Orleans during the storm with poor management.
6) Being a religious hypocrite is OK – Hating Muslims in private but supporting Saudis, Pakistanis, Egyptians.
7) Killing is OK – Killing innocent Iraqis with bombings
8) Incompetence is OK – Calling Australians as Austrians
9) Cronyism is OK – Putting only friends in main jobs

With the next government it will be more of the same, maybe a little less but will have the same characterestics.

Do you agree with the poster? Can you fill in the blanks.

Intruder tries to break into Warren Buffett’s home

A robber with camouflage paint on his face and a fake gun tries to break into billionaire Warren Buffett’s home. But before he could break in he encountered Buffett’s security guard, which prevented him from entering Buffett’s home.
Billionaire Warren Buffett’s wife Astrid, heard the doorbell ring shortly after 10 p.m. So, she asked her security guard to see who was at the door.

When the security guard opened the door, he saw a man dressed in black and with face paint and a fake gun. Before the guard could react, the robber hit the guard’s head and fled the house. So far he remains at large and the police are looking for him.

Warren Buffett was away from his home at that time. Luckily the robber didn’t hurt his wife.

Buffett spokeswoman Jackie Wilson did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. Police described the case as an attempted robbery but said the suspect never entered the home.

Buffett is the world’s third richest man and has an estimated worth of $52 billion dollars according to Forbes magazine. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., based in Omaha, Nebraska.

Warren Buffett's home.

He still lives in a modest home he moved in 1958, which he bought it for $31,500. It is not a gated property. But after this incident, he will probably secure the place.

I wonder whether the robber knows that the home he is stealing belongs to Warren Buffett, the third richest man in the world. If he does know Buffett, the thief probably wanted to strike it rich at Buffett’s house. Even Buffett will say it is not that simple to make the first billion dollars.

Russian scientists discover radiation- absorbing mineral

Nuclear Radiation Sign

Russian scientists have discovered a nuclear radiation absorbing mineral in the Khibinsky Mountains in the Arctic Circle. They claim it can absorb radioactivity from a liquid nuclear waste making them safe to handle afterwards.
Yakov Pakhomovsky, the head of the Kolsky Research Institute, claim this new mineral named 27-4 can absorb radioactivity from the liquid nuclear waste. If this material is approved, then the newly discovered material will be of immense use to dispose of the nuclear waste.

When the radioactive water comes in contact with the mineral, the water becomes safe. If this mineral had been available just after the Chernobyl or Three Mile Island disasters, they say the consequences would have been different because both accidents resulted in contamination from radioactive water.

The principle is simple but they need tons of this new material to absorb the radioactivity in the nuclear waste. So, far the Russians have discovered only a few grams; however they are confident they can reproduce this synthetically on a large scale.

The Kolsky Peninsula is a hot area for newly discovered minerals; more than one third of all new mineral discoveries are made there.

If the Russian claims are proven, then this will become a significant discovery for the nuclear industry, which has problems disposing nuclear waste. But they have to prove more whether the new mineral will absorb the radiation or just the radio activity material or both. They also have to show how they can reproduce this material on a large scale.

Turn Off Cell Phones in Hospital Rooms

Cell phone in the hospital lobby

Doctors in Netherlands are advising the hospital visitors to turn off their cell phones, not for the etiquette reasons rather protecting the patient’s health. Cell phones were found to activate pacemakers and ventilators without any warning.
University of Amsterdam researchers, Erik Jan van Lieshout, MD and his colleagues have found out that the Cell phones may interact with critical medical care equipment such as pacemakers and ventilators and in some case may shut them off while providing care. They used cell phones near 61 medical devices that weren’t connected to patients for testing purposes.

The Dutch researchers advice us to keep the cell phone off at least a meter (3.28 feet) distance away from the medical equipments and from hospital beds when patients are connected to equipments.

Even though this may be the safe distance, the cell phones may still cause electromagnetic interference in hospital equipment.

From the tests, the researchers found the cell phones caused 48 incidents in 26 devices. A third of them were hazardous, it restarted the mechanical ventilator several times, stopped syringe pumps without any alarm, and caused incorrect pulses in an external pacemaker.

Another 42% of the incidents were considered as “significant” but not hazardous. The phones incorrectly set off an alarm and incorrectly monitor blood pressure. The remaining incidents were considered “light” and it disrupted monitor displays.

The researchers note that their testing situations were "worst-case" scenarios. They argue that it is imperative that cell phones in hospitals are restricted so that their electromagnetic interference with other medical equipments wouldn’t pose problems for patients. This study appears online in the next issue of journal Critical Care.

It is a good study because so far no one has analyzed independently, however, hope they will do a more extensive study and find out which type of phones cause problems and which doesn’t, whether the medical instruments can be sealed in anyway so they don’t react to these phones. But till then, we should leave our mobile phones in car or at home, first take care of the patient, see that they are well taken care off and then worry about other things which can wait. It is rude to talk loud in the lobby and to hear those annoying tones in hospital. For both etiquette and health reasons, it is better to keep the cell phone off.

Endangered tigers killed for medicine

Indochinese Tigers. Image Ref: http://www.savethetigerfund.org/

Police arrested a Vietnamese woman after they found two frozen tigers in a fridge and two soup kettles filled with animal bones in her home. They also found other animal parts.
A 40 year old woman in Hanoi, Vietnam confessed to police about her illegal operations. It seems she hired three experts to cook tiger bones to make traditional medicine and sold them for more than $800 per 100 grams. The Police found two frozen tigers in a fridge and two soup kettle filled with animal bones in an outdoor kitchen.

The woman stored these tigers in the fridge. A photo of the stored tiger is in the link above, it was horrific to see so I didn’t add it here. She cooked the tigers outside the building in an area where people usually gathered to eat breakfast. She was doing in the open for a long period until the time she got arrested.

Vietnam complies with the International treaty to protect endangered species, but still some Vietnamese smuggle them to their country and use it as a medicine.

Police are speculating that these two adult Indochinese tigers might have been bought from neighboring Burma or Laos. These two tigers weighed 250 kilograms and have an estimated value of $20,000 each.

They also found other animal parts in the woman’s home, such as bear paws, ivory and other wild animal parts.

Last month in Vietnam, Police arrested eight men after they had poisoned a tiger in a zoo and selling that tiger for $15,000 in southern Tien Gian Province.

Also, read Dheeraj’s article where similar illegal trades are on going in many countries including China.

I don’t know when they will start to realize these animals will no longer be around and become extinct soon. My friend in New York was saying there is an International market that deals with all sorts of exotic animals and they are traded in plenty here also.

How Much Booze Is Good For You?

University of Missouri researchers claim light drinking helps heart’s health, but more drinking beyond that becomes harmful. They recommend one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men.
Cardiologist James H. O’Keefe and his colleagues from University of Missouri have reported their findings in the upcoming Sept. 11 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The researchers have pointed in that paper that there are many studies that shows the healthy benefits of moderate drinking and in their study they wanted to see how much drinking is needed to offer healthy benefits.

They found that one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men is sufficient and offers enough benefits for health, but beyond that drinking becomes detrimental to one’s health. Some may become misled with healthy benefits of alcohol so may end up drinking more which will produce a counter effect. O’Keefe warns, more is not only better, it is harmful as well.

What is one drink? O’Keefe and colleagues say the following: “a drink is a 12-ounce bottle of beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled liquor which all have between 13 and 15 grams of alcohol.”

The University of Missouri researchers warn the doctors against offering advice to people to drink despite the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption.

They warn that even moderate drinking is a slippery slope which may lead to alcoholism or difficult to control later.

I couldn’t access this particular journal in American College of Cardiology, but this issue may be available in your local university.

We all know moderation in drinking is the key, but if the researchers are able to quantify how much is enough, we can use them as a guide. I doubt this study however will deter drinkers from drinking less than two drinks, they will drink more. If we just need health benefits, there are plenty of safe sources than drinking.

Do you agree with this study?

The image and text versions of the book clips of Epictetus, ancient Greek Philosopher, are shown here.

Google Books has thousands of books available for view either complete book or portions of it depending upon their availability in public domain. With the new Google Books tool feature you can add book clips directly on your site.

The new tool can be found in the upper menu bar as shown circled in the picture, just choose the content after you click this grab tool. After you finish grabbing the picture, it will give you two options, one image or text versions and then you can copy the embed codes and paste it in your site. The text version however doesn’t have good formatting, I think it uses OCR reader to convert the PDF into text, the formatting gets lost in the process.

So, when the user is interested in this book, they can double click the image and read the book in Google Books or download it free if they are available in public domain.

Let me know if you have any questions.

It is a good tool, but if you want to quote more than a page length or if it straddles more than two pages then you have to choose two coded images.

Breastfeeding vital within first hour of birth

According to the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) more than one million babies could be saved worldwide if mothers start to breastfeed within the first hour of birth.
This message from the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was sent in conjunction with the World Breastfeeding Week 2007. A global breastfeeding event was held in the Malaysia’s Penang Caring Society Complex, where 60 mothers in 21 countries breastfed simultaneously for one minute to raise awareness.

Susan Siew, Co-Director of WABA said breastfeeding is very crucial for the six months of a baby’s life; breast milk contains vital nutrients that are essential for the baby. This helps saves lives and also reduces developing allergies as they grow.

Usually after the baby is born is taken away for weighing and cleaning, instead it would be best if these actions are delayed and babies are breastfed first according to Deputy Director Liew Mun Tip. Babies need to be fed for more than 10 times a day.

Also many fathers attended this event, they also need to know these facts and encourage breastfeeding for their children.

WABA coordinator Julianna Lim Abdullah said at this event:
During breastfeeding, many mothers sometimes experience anxiety and feel very alone when things don’t go smoothly. We find that their husbands are especially good at helping their wives relax in such situation”.

I hope the new born parents heed their advices and provide breastfeeding for their babies, their health and long term survival depends on it. There is a common myth, women lose their beauties if breastfed, which is not true it promotes good health in both mother and child.

Apple cuts 8GB iPhone price to $399

Today Apple released newer version of iPods and one iPhone type device without phone called iPod Touch. Sensing competition from iPod Touch, Apple decides to cut the prices for iPhone to $399.
Apple introduced next generation of iPods; Chris will be adding an in-depth article soon. The iPod Touch has most of the features of an iPhone but without the main phone service and sells for $299. Since many might choose this, Apple decided to reduce the prices for the iPhones. Apple announced it today that they are cutting the prices of iPhones, 8GB models from $599 to $399, which is very significant and good news; there will be more sales because of it. Now many who couldn’t afford before like me could buy this.

New iPod Touch

However, Apple has not said anything about the iPhone 4GB models in their main page, but I found this link where they are available for $299 which is a great price also. They may not be around for a long time, they may be discontinued in the future because of poor sales compared to 8GB models. But with the lower prices, Apple can sell both models.

Now iPhone looks very attractive in both price and quality wise.

Disable Restart Prompt After Installing Windows Updates

After you install the new Windows update, you usually get a prompt message which says “Do you want to restart your computer now” and this message keeps repeating every 10 minutes until you restart. Get rid of this message with a simple method.
You will be in middle of something running several programs, but then the Windows update is downloaded in the background and gives a message “Do you want to restart the computer now?” and gives an option either “Restart Now” or “Restart Later” if you hit the later then it becomes annoying when this message gets repeated every 10 minutes you hit this button.

To get rid of this annoying windows prompt message, try the following method:

1. Click Start --> Run and open the Run Window.
2. Type “gpedit.msc” to open the Group Policy
3. Click Local Computer Policy --> Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Windows Update and double click “Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations” as shown below.

Palm kills the Foleo dead

According to Engadget, Palm just cancelled the Foleo. Palm CEO Ed Colligan posted a message to the company's offical blog said they've decided to cancel Foleo mobile companion "in its current configuration", so that they can focus more on the next generation platform and the first smartphones that will bring the plantform to market.

Ed also said they may do a Foleo II version in the future based on the next generation of smartphones.

Good move by Palm, nobody needs Foleo at the moment. It is time Palm starts focusing on their Smartphones, already iPhones are the leaders in the category.

iPhone outsells Palm, Blackberry smartphones in July

iPhone

In its first full month of release in the market, Apple’s iPhone outsold all other smartphones in the United States in July. It accounts for 1.8 percent of all U.S. mobile handset sales according to research group iSuppli.
ISuppli collected data from more than two million participants in the United States via a consumer survey, which it conducts once a month. It said Apple’s iPhone (both 4GB and 8GB models) sold more than Blackberry series, entire portfolio of Palm Treo smartphones, and other individual Smartphone model from HP, Motorola, Nokia or Samsung.

ISuppli said with this trend it predicts Apple will sell 4.5 million iPhones by this year, and sell more than 30 million in 2011.

Since the regular mobile handset is the popular selling one iPhone’s market share is only 1.8 percent, but when compared to overall Smartphone market share is very high. ISuppli noted that sales of iPhone equaled sales of LG Electronics’ Chocolate phone model, which is the most popular feature phone on the US market.

While iSuppli has not collected historical information on this topic, it's likely that the speed of the iPhone's rise to competitive dominance in its segment is unprecedented in the history of the mobile-handset market."
iSuppli said to Reuters.

It is always tough for a new entrant in any established field, so to see Apple leading all other competitors is an achievement by itself.

Females accounted for 48% of all iPhone buyers, so it is just not males buying the iPhone. Also most buyers of iPhones are under 35 and have a college degree according to iSuppli. A quarter of the buyers had to switch to AT&T because of its exclusivity in using iPhone in its network.

iPhone is currently being sold only in the US, but later this year it will be sold in Europe and Canada? The above figures could have been higher if it didn’t have AT&T exclusivity restriction, then many buyers from other networks and countries would have bought more iPhones.

Another Tool To Map Website Visitors

Digital Radio iPods expected on Wednesday

Apple plans to launch a new range of iPods this week, which are designed to receive digital radio and allow purchase of music of tracks being listened to at the digital radio station.
Steve Jobs and Apple will make a big announcement about the new iPods coming Wednesday, September 5, 2007. One reliable industry insider has told vnunet.com that Apple has plans to bring digital radio option to the iPods along with an option to buy music. It will most likely have Wi-Fi to enable the digital radio stations. iTunes player already has radio stations capability, whether the iPods will sync with your radio list in iTunes we have to wait and see.

The insider said the new iPods will receive digital radio and will include a “buy now” function to allow the user to download the tracks they are listening in the radio and buy the tracks as they are being played.

The music downloads will be limited to the songs that are available in iTunes store, but Apple hopes to provide more music tracks in this service in the future. Whether the same functions will be available in iPhone is not clear.
There are also rumors about the new iPods that Apple will provide more touch screen capabilities like iPhone and do away with hardware buttons (scroll buttons) it has. Apple may also introduce a new iPod Nano with added video functions.

With huge iPhone sales, the iPods may have declined a bit, so Apple must be thinking of making some radical changes to keep them a best seller for a long time. So with this new digital radio and buy feature, it will make a great product to buy.

GPay - Google’s Answer for Mobile Payment

Google published a new patent that outlines a mobile phone payment system, GPay, presumably for its new GPhone or for all mobile phones. This will facilitate easy purchase of buying goods from vendors, offline retailers.
A new patent published on August 30th shows Google’s new mobile phone payment system called GPay.

In the text message based payment patent, it mentions the following:

Communication interface 866 may provide for communications under various modes or protocols, such as GSM voice calls, SMS, EMS, or MMS messaging, CDMA, TDMA, PDC, WCDMA, CDMA2000, or GPRS, among others. Such communication may occur, for example, through radio-frequency transceiver 868. In addition, short-range communication may occur, such as using a Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or other such transceiver (not shown).

From the patent it is obvious they want to make this as a universal payment method for mobile phones not just for GPhones and also work under a variety of means by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi communications offering flexibility.

This GPay payment method will allow the mobile user to pay for goods from either a vending machine or purchasing directly from offline retailers; also allow receiving payments from others via GPay.

PayPal has a mobile paying system via SMS, but you need to learn a few steps to send or receive the payment successfully. With Google GPay it will make it easier based on the diagrams shown in the patent. If they have a built in application in the phone, then the users will find it easier to access and send or receive the money at will.

Underage Drinking Hits Grade School

Researcher John Donavan, Ph. D., says a majority of children are exposed to and experience drinking at an early age. He says it is imperative that children are taught to prevent alcohol use when kids are in fifth grade.
John Donovan, Ph. D., of the University of Pittsburgh gathered data from four surveys on children and alcohol ranging from the 1990s until 2005. He says more and more children are drinking at a young age.

Donovan said even though most children don’t use alcohol on a regular basis, the number of children who have used alcohol rises between grades four and six.

This would suggest that primary preventive interventions for child alcohol use would be best targeted in fifth grade to reduce or delay this pattern of early onset,"
Donovan writes in September's edition of the journal Prevention Science.

In a most recent survey conducted from 2004-2005 included 25,000 students showed that about 7% of fourth graders, 8% of fifth graders, and 13% of sixth graders had drunk beer, liquor, or wine coolers.

An earlier survey in 1998 showed among 1,500 sixth grade students, 62% of boys and 58% of girls have tasted alcohol.

The surveys don’t say where they drank alcohol; some may have sipped a wine or tasted alcohols in weddings or religious ceremonies. Donovan said, wherever they drink, it is best to talk about alcohol use to children at an early age rather than wait when they are teenagers, which may become late at that time.

Donovan just wants to report this so there won’t be any misconceptions that only a few children will drink.

Underage drinking advertisement. Image ref: http://www.adcouncil.org/

I think it all starts at home, when parents drink too much in front of children; the children tend to follow them. When the beer and wine is all around the home, it becomes tempting for any who live there. It is better to taught them about drinking from a young age, so they become responsible in drinking at a later stage. My parents never drank in front of us, so it made it easier for us growing up.

Beethoven can help crops grow more quickly

South Korean researchers said some of the genes in the plants respond to Beethoven’s classical music, and say by making the genes either active or non active can help them grow or flower quickly.
Plants are known to respond to light, wind and soil nutrients. Today’s growers have modified the plants so much they can make a seasonal plant to flower all year long and provide fruits likewise. Some farmers have claimed previously including the Prince of Wales that they talk to the plants and the plants respond to them. South Korean researchers now say plants respond to music as well.

Mi-Jeong Jeong from the National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology in Suwon, South Korea and his colleagues played some classical music including Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in rice fields. They claim to have identified genes in the plant that can “hear” or respond to music.

The researchers have published their findings in this week’s “New Scientist” magazine. They say this discovery will help the farmers to switch plant genes on and off making crops flower at certain times or grow more quickly.

Mi-Jeong Jeong and his colleagues played 14 different classical pieces to rice plants. They monitored gene expression in the plants - the process by which their DNA code is translated into instructions for biological processes such as growth.

The researchers found that at specific frequencies of the sound, between 125 Hertz and 250 Hertz, the genes rbcS and Ald in the plants become more active, whereas at 50 Hertz the genes are less active. Both these genes respond to light, the researchers repeated the experiment at night; the genes responded to sound and produced the same effect as it did during daytime.

The researchers thus conclude by this triggering of genes can make them produce chemicals, which could then be harnessed to activate other specific genes in the plant that will lead to flowering.

Other scientists are doubtful about these experiments; they say they need more data to confirm its findings.

Rolling Stone will add another category soon Top 10 hits of plants if the South Korean researchers confirm their theory beyond any reasonable doubt. But I don’t think the musicians will be happy to be in this list including Beethoven.

I had a neighbor she used to talk to her plants and claimed it helped them grow. She said they are living things just like us and used to care for them and I saw the plants grew real well. Whether it was because of her talking or whether she fed them well, I am not sure, but it grew fine. However, I didn’t try her method with my plants all I did gave them fertilizer and lots of water. Do you or know anyone do the same, talk to the plants?

Secondhand Smoke Causes Cancer in Pets Too

No smoking in front of pets. Image Ref: http://www.theashtoninn.com/ashimgs/signsyes.png

Veterinarians say secondhand smoke can not only cause cancer in humans but can also pose a threat to dogs and cats as well. Secondhand smoking has been associated with oral cancer in cats and lung cancer in dogs.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 126 million non-smoking Americans are being exposed to secondhand smoke on a daily basis in their homes, vehicles, workplaces and public places. This secondhand smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer and heart disease deaths among non smokers according to the California Environmental Protection Agency.

The pets are as much exposed to secondhand smoking as humans at home when their owners are smokers. Veterinarian Carolynn MacAllister of Oklahoma State University it is not surprising that secondhand smoking poses dangers to pets.

There have been a number of scientific papers recently that have reported the significant health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets," MacAllister said.

MacAllister said secondhand smoking has been associated with oral cancer and lymphoma in cats, lung and nasal cancers in dogs, and also causes lung cancer in birds.

A study done by the Tufts College of Veterinary Medicine showed the number of cats living with mouth cancer were higher at places where they lived with smokers than in a smoke free environment.

MacAllister believes it may because of cats grooming habits. They constantly lick themselves when grooming, since the cancer causing carcinogens accumulate on their fur, the cats end up consuming that and exposes them to mouth cancer.

Cats also have a high incidence of lymphoma if they live with smokers almost twice as much as those living in a smoke free environment. Lymphomas are deadly and it causes fatality in three out of four cats within 12 months of formation.

Dogs living in a smoking household are more prone to cancers of the nose and sinus area, especially the long nosed breed, their noses seem to have a greater surface area that is exposed to carcinogens and hence it accumulates more in the nose area. Dogs with nasal cancers die within a year. Short and medium nosed dogs have no problems with this type of cancer but they are more susceptible to lung cancer, more carcinogens reach the lungs with no place to settle in the nose regions.

Birds have the same problem as the short and medium nosed dogs are a high risk for getting lung cancer. They also get pneumonia because their respiratory systems are very sensitive to any type of air pollutant.

MacAllister advices pet owners either to smoke outside away from pets or stop smoking all together.

When kids and pets are in the homes, it is best not to smoke at all. Why cause harm to oneself and others that love them also.

Do you encounter these problems with your pets?

Babies Get More Than Secondhand Smoke

(CBS/AP)

New studies find babies get more than second hand smoke when their parents smoke in front of them. Babies, whose parents smoke get high levels of cotinine, a nicotine byproduct, compared to babies whose parents don't smoke.
Previously many studies have found that secondary smoke cause damages to children and this study found that chemical traces of cigarette smoke may show up in babies of parents who smoke. The study shows that cotinine, a chemical released when the body breaks down nicotine is more abundant in urine samples from smokers’ babies than from nonsmokers’ babies.

So far not much study has been done to see how much cotinine levels would affect babies, but researchers say any exposure to tobacco is not healthy according to one of the researchers, Mike Wailoo, M.D., FRCP, a senior lecturer in the child health department of England's University of Leicester.

Dr. Wailoo and his colleagues analyzed urine samples from 104 babies who were about 10 to 12 weeks old. Most of the babies, 68% of them had at least one parent who smoked cigarettes. Overall 62% of the babies had both mothers and fathers who smoked. 18% of them only the mothers smoked the remaining 20% only the father smoked. These parents smoked 16 cigarettes per day on an average.

The results from this study showed that babies of parents who smoked had cotinine levels five times higher than babies of nonsmoking parents. Maternal smoking had the highest effect, quadrupling the babies’ cotinine levels. Paternal smoking nearly doubled the babies’ cotinine levels.

"Our findings clearly show that by accumulating cotinine, babies become heavy passive smokers secondary to the active smoking of parents," write the researchers.

Wailoo’s team recommends that parents should avoid smoking in front of the children as much as possible. Mothers just like they protect their babies from danger, they should see this harmful effect also and protect their children and their future.

It was also found previously how smoking damages the sperm and genetics of children.

The parents should do the right thing and not smoke in front of the children or stop smoking at all. Why do the parents want to raise them only to cause them more damage in the future by smoking?
