Woman's cells survive for 60 years after her death, cure diseases

HeLa body cells are living and multiplying for the last 60 years on their own. Image: http://fig.cox.miami.edu/

A woman’s body cells were taken for analysis, the cells remain alive even after 60 years from the body, and they multiply and divide just like regular cells. Usually normal cells separated from the body die after a certain time but this one is not.
When human body cells are removed from the body and put into a cell culture, they quickly weaken and die usually within 50 divisions. Without the rest of the body structure, such as the heart, digestive system, blood circulation, the cells cannot survive. Even if they are put in a Petri dish and try to simulate the body conditions, the cells will die. The body cells are dependent from the body they originate from. But in Henrietta Lacks’ case, the body cells removed more than 60 years ago, just keeps on going and multiplying.

In 1951 Henrietta Lacks visited the hospital to check after spotting blood on her clothes. Samples were taken from her cervical tissue and sent to the lab for analysis. The results came and showed she had cervical cancer. This cancer was caused by the human
There is, however, one human being who is biologically immortal on a technicality, and her name is Henrietta Lacks. In 1951 she showed up at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, complaining of blood spotting in her underwear. Samples were taken of her cervical tissue and sent to a lab for analysis, which came back with a diagnosis of cervical cancer. The cancer was caused by the Human papillomavirus, which is a sexually transmitted disease.

Most of the variants of this virus are harmless, but some are known to cause the cervical cancer. She underwent treatments for it, before that they took some more samples from the tumor and sent to George Gey, head of tissue culture research at Hopkins, for further analysis.

Gey found a unique thing with these cells, these cancer stricken cells not only survived in the lab for a long period but also were able to multiply outside Lacks’ body. And another strange thing was the cells didn’t age, it was like them being immortal. And they are still alive even today and remain the same young as ever. They call these cells as HeLa cells named after Henrietta Lacks.

Poor Henrietta however succumbed to the cancer on October 4th, 1951.

The HeLa cells are widely used in biological research just like the lab rats and replicate with the same characteristics as the original cells. They are used in cancer research because one cannot use them on living human patients, so it is very invaluable to test the various methods on the HeLa Cells. They were also used in the development of the Polio vaccine, making Henrietta somewhat of a posthumous hero to millions.

The fascinating thing they will keep on multiplying even after thousands of years, even some of the original cells that was taken away from Henrietta will live for a long time. The scientists haven’t found another cells like this, since this is a highly unique cells they consider as a new species and have given a genus name as Helacyton gartleri named by Van Valen & Maiorana.

The interaction of the papillomavirus and Henrietta’s body cells made this possible. She is considered a hero for this sample of cells, without which the scientists would have used more lab rats and more humans as test subjects.

Police use tracking devices for Alzheimer's patients

Care Trak Transmitter watch. Image: http://www.caretrak.com/

The Greenfield Police Department in Indiana is planning to buy tracking devices that uses radio technology to locate people with Alzheimer’s disease, autism, when they become lost.
Greenfield Police Chief Clarke Mercer wants to use this technology to locate missing people. He said those who are prone to getting lost can wear this tiny device that transmits radio signals on pre-set frequencies. Police use tracking receivers and tune to that particular frequency of the person they are seeking to find.

Greenfield is the seventh agency in Indiana to use Care Trak technology according to Michael Chlewski, a representative of the company.

Police have been using considerable resources in the past to locate missing Alzheimer’s patients; this new technology will help them locate faster. Recently in Greenfield, Indiana two students with autism went missing from the elementary school and had to comb a vast area to locate them.

Mercer saw the demonstration of this device and was bowled over by it and said it is a no brainer not to use this technology in the police department.

Della Turnbill, a facilitator for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group in Greenfield said this will bring peace of mind to the families.

The units cost about $6,500 and are funded in total by means of donations and contributions from various organizations.

Joey Johnson, assistant principal of J.B. Stephens Elementary School, who made the suggestion first to Mercer, said this technology helps the community as well as the police to find the missing persons quickly with minimum effort and provides a safe environment for the community.

Johnson said the radio equipment has more advantages than GPS technology, which is less effective in wooded area or if the person goes inside the building. Radio technology can be used in those problem areas.

Chris and Gretchen Schulz, parent of 10 year old autistic child Sam, welcomes this new technology in Greenfield. Their son has tried to run away from home and school many times.

It sounds great and should be used by other communities also, since the costs are not high to implement compared to the existing costs in the community needed to locate missing persons.

NBC chief says Apple 'destroyed' music pricing

NBC Universal chief executive Jeff Zucker says Apple’s iTunes is destroying the music industry, wants others to take a stand against Apple. They claim Apple is restricting them to make decent profits.
Jeff Zucker gave a speech at the Syracuse’s Newhouse School of Communications and said Apple has destroyed the music business in terms of pricing. He said if no actions are taken against Apple, it will do the same for the video industry also.

This is following NBC announcement last month when they decided to withdraw their TV shows from iTunes due to contract disputes. NBC demanded a high price; iTunes said the new higher prices will be prohibitive for customers.

NBC originally claimed that it wanted to take more control over the pricing set at iTunes wanted to bundle songs and videos together and also demanded better piracy controls. But Apple said it will distribute the same way it does for other songs and wanted to maintain the flexibility it offered to its current customers.

NBC TV. Image: Engadget

NBC demanded $4.99 for every episode, but iTunes said no, it sells all other videos from other major broadcasters for $1.99 per episode.

Zucker talked about this feud and said with iTunes, they made only $15 million in sales including the videos it sold there. So, it was easy for them to pull away from iTunes. He also said NBC wanted to try one show, Hero, on a trial basis and wanted to sell at an increased price of $2.99, but Apple said no. He

Zucker also tried to demand a cut of Apple Hardware sales of iPods and iPhones. He gave the following reasoning in his speech.

Apple sold millions of dollars worth of hardware off the back of our content and made a lot of money…They did not want to share in what they were making off the hardware or allow us to adjust pricing."

Zucker’s NBC and News Corp started a new online video venture named Hulu (known in Swahili language as Cease and Desist) which will broadcast many of its shows with ads built in. He is fully confident that it will be a big hit and compete against iTunes successfully.

Zucker and NBC just don’t understand the download business. The electronic downloads hardly costs anything for distribution, yet they are trying to charge it as much as the physical DVD, CD versions. NBC pulled the videos from iTunes, then soon after they started selling at Amazon.com for a lesser price. If profit is a concern why sell at a lower price than iTunes.

NBC and others just want to dominate the market and sell at a high price. Thanks to iTunes, NBC's Office had a huge following and many downloaded from iTunes, I doubt they will sell as much elsewhere. Thanks to him and News Corp practices there will be more piracy instead of legitimate downloading from iTunes.

PC World: Macbook Pro is the "Fastest Windows Vista Laptop" of 2007

Apple MacBook Pro. Image: PC World.

PC World reviewed different laptop models and says MacBook Pro is the fastest laptop running Microsoft Windows Vista programs even among computers with dedicated Vista only OS. MacBook with its Leopard OS can run both Vista and Mac programs.
The new Apple MacBook Pro has a lightweight 17 inch screen with the new Leopard OS. It boasts 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 Intel processor, with maximum 4GB RAM, and 160 GB Hard Drive, nVidia GeForce 8600m GT graphics card and sells for $2,799. The price may be on the high side for comparative Windows based laptops, but outperforms all other laptop according to PC World.

PC World loaded Windows Vista Home Premium on the Apple notebook, it got a “WorldBench 6 Beta 2” score of 88. With games, it was able to achieve a frame rate of 141 frames per second in Far Cry. They compared with other laptops running only Windows OS programs, still MacBook Pro came out on top despite running two OS in it, Vista OS and Leopard OS.

It is only 6.6 pounds in weight and just 1 inch in thickness, MacBook Pro is the lightest 17 inch notebook in its class. It has no memory card slots, only three USB ports and two FireWire ports. PC World said battery life is not a good one, in their tests it worked less than 2 hours, 45 minutes (Apple has 5.7 hours on one charge in its specifications).

It is time to switch to Apple OS.

How to convert any long URLs to a decent one

Decent URL front page. Image: DecentURL.com

Some URLs are way too long to decipher or retype, if you miss a few letters it will take you nowhere. There are number of methods to make the URLs shorter, but DecentURL method will make the URL meaningful.
There are currently many type of services that make the URL shorter, the one I use most is the Tinyurl.com, which does an incredible job of making the URL concise and shareable.

Here is an example for the book, “Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food” sold in Amazon:

The original link at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061251348/104-6533620-9763122?ie=UTF8&tag=bluemountaintrad&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=0061251348

TinyURL link:

http://tinyurl.com/2po8th

The TinyURL link is fine, but “2po8th” doesn’t mean anything, if you want to share this, others will be skeptical. It is better to have a meaningful link like the one below from DecentURL.

DecentURL link:

http://decenturl.com/amazon/deceptively-delicious-for-children

Here is another example, “Whitehouse in Google Maps”:

Original Link:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=EN&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=White+House&ie=UTF8&ll=38.897613,-77.036744&spn=0.001399,0.003648&t=h&z=18&om=1

Tiny URL link:

http://tinyurl.com/24awcd

Even this link doesn’t sound quite well, “24awcd” doesn’t have any relation to the “White House”. DecentURL converts this into a meaningful URL as follows:

DecentURL Link:

http://decenturl.com/maps.google/white-house-map

Now the URL looks decent and readable. You can share this link with others freely, who will realize it is not a weird link but means something.

You can also leave the title blank in the decentURL.com, it will search the original title and fill it for you.

If you have a website, it is better to have meaningful URL links than have long random numbered link. Here is a good article you can read about having a decent URL and also this article how to use URL as a good user interface.

Apple Sends 3rd Grader Cease And Desist Letter

Shea O'Gorman with her mother, recieved cease and desist notice from Apple. Image: http://cbs13.com/

A nine year old iPod Nano user, sent Apple new product ideas to make the iPods better. Instead of receiving a thank you note, she received a Cease and Desist notice from legal department of Apple.
Nine year old Shea O’Gorman is an avid iPod Nano user. She started to learn writing letters in her class. She decided to practice it by writing a letter to Steve Jobs, Apple President, and wanted to share some new product ideas for iPod Nano.

She was excited with this little assignment and told her mom that she is going to write a letter addressed to Steve Jobs. Shea’s mother was very happy and proud of her daughter.

In the letter, she wrote how Steve Jobs can improve the iPods by outlining her ideas. One of the suggestions was adding song lyrics to iPod, so the users can sing-along with the song, which I think is inventive for a nine year old child.

After writing the letter she mailed to Apple, she didn’t get a response back for three months, until she received one letter from Apple. Shea and her family were excited to receive this letter and in anticipation they opened the letter and was devastated with the contents especially Shea. Shea’s mom said to the TV station:

She was very upset. She kind of threw the letter up in the air and ran into her room and slammed the door,”

The letter was not from Steve Jobs, rather from the senior counsel, Apple Law Department, which wrote a long letter telling Shea to Cease and Desist sending ideas to Apple. They said they don’t need her suggestions and if she wants to know the reason why, she can read their legal policy on their website. They don’t want any unsolicited ideas from anyone, be a nine year old kid or anybody else.

Shea’s mom felt outraged with this response and said it is an odd way to respond to a nine year old like that.

It kind of seemed like they were saying well we don't want your idea like it's not good or anything,”

Her mom thinks that Apple’s behavior shows double standards, on the one hand they are promoting themselves as an educator for children, and should have responded in a better way rather than the rude response from its legal department.

Later the news channel contacted them and it seems Apple had apologized to Shea’s family. I think one of their top executives should invite her and talk to her honestly in person. Even if the idea is bad, this is not the way to treat a child or any customer for that matter. Customers send ideas because they love the company, otherwise they wouldn’t send ideas. The company should be happy they are giving free ideas for it. If the idea is bad, they should say why it won’t work with the current environment, the customer will understand.

You can’t blame Apple for this single incident, but I am sure Steve Jobs wouldn’t have responded this way. I hope Shea doesn't get flustered by this incident and keep having these great ideas.

Online Craigslist nanny ad ends in death

Katherine Ann Olson. Image: http://www.startribune.com/

A Minnesota woman wanted to inquire a nanny job advertised on Craigslist, but was found dead in the trunk of the car. The man who posted the advertisement is arrested pending charges.
Katherine Ann Olson, 24, saw an advertisement in Craigslist, an online classifieds website for jobs, apartments and many more. She was interested in a nanny job, so she went to a place in Savage, Minnesota to inquire about the job, but didn’t return. She was last seen by her friends on Thursday morning, when she told one of them that she is going to inquire about this job.

A 19 year old Savage man is placed in custody and being held pending charges. Authorities have not released too many details about him, whether he was involved or not. Also, the police didn’t say the motive behind the killing.

A Savage resident found the purse of the Olson’s in a garbage can at Pacer Park. Police at that time didn’t know Olson was missing; they had called Olson’s home to inquire about the missing purse. But later found that Olson was missing since Thursday 8 am when she went to interview for the nanny job.

The police investigated the park and the garbage can, they found a bloody towel according to Police Capt. David Muelken. They searched the area and found a car in the parking lot of Rudy Kraemer Nature Preserve in Burnsville, a few blocks from Pacer Park. The car belonged to Olson and in it they discovered her body in the trunk.

Olson was a 2002 graduate of Park Cottage Grove High School, where she was co-valedictorian and from St. Olaf College in 2006.

Her family said she took two nanny jobs earlier without any problems after answering the online ads, but this time it turned deadlier. It has become a predatory type of environment in some places that people will kill for no reason.

Not all ads in Craigslist are this violent, but in the future, try to follow these precautions in Craigslist or any personal ads you see. If you have any suggestions please do so:

1.) Anyone wants to meet the seller or the buyer, should do so in a public place.
2.) Try to go with a friend of yours if you want to check the product.
3.) Ask questions before hand, don’t try to ask questions later may lead to problems.
4.) Ask for a telephone number and tell your family about this transaction, where you are going to go.
5.) Meet only in daytime in a crowded area, don’t try to go to their private homes.
6.) Ask if they have references, if they have an Ebay account, you can check their feedbacks to see the reliability of the seller. But even 100% feedback may not show the true character, so use caution at all time.
7.) Don't reveal too many personal details to anyone, you just share information about the product.

Google - The $160 billion typo error

Due to a typo error, the original name “Googol” was registered wrongly by a Stanford Student as “Google”. It was a $160 billion (current value of the company) typo error that catapulted Google as one of the premier internet technology company.
In 1996, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, were trying to name their new search engine company. They floated many names, one of them was “BackRub” named for its analysis of the web’s “back links”. Luckily they didn’t name the company as such, which doesn’t sound right compared to Google.

Larry Page was studying at Stanford University and sharing the office in room 360 of the Gates Computer Science Building at Stanford University with several other graduate students, including Sean Anderson, who came up with this typo.

Larry and Sean were discussing several names for the company and were using a whiteboard, to come up with a good name. Since the search engine involves indexing immense amount of data, Sean suggested the world “Googolplex”, which refers to a large number, 10 powered Googol times.

But Larry didn’t like the word Googolplex, just Googol. They did a search to see whether Googol was registered, but Sean instead of typing “Googol” he typed “Google” and found the domain to be available. Larry liked this new name, within hours later, he and Sergey Brin registered the name “Google.com” and the rest became history.

Lucky for Sean it was a great error to make, a $160 billion worth on the positive side. Sean is not working with Google now, he is working for Microsoft, Google’s archrival.

UN: Biofuels 'crime against humanity'

http://www.argusbiofuels.com/images/fuel.jpg
Biofuels

UN is worried about the growing trend of using crops to produce biofuels as a replacement for petrol and believe this will lead to severe food shortages for the poor and cause more hunger.
Jean Ziegler, the UN special reporter on the right to food, has condemned the wide use of crops as biofuels and says it will lead to widespread hunger if not curtailed or controlled.

The growth in the production of biofuels has helped the prices of some crops to record levels and those who want to use it for food purposes will find it hard to purchase them and will cause severe hunger.

Ziegler complained because of biofuels needs others are converting many other food crops like maize and sugar into fuel. He said this has created a recipe for disaster. He said it is a crime against humanity to divert arable land to the production of crops and then burned for fuel.

Ziegler wants a five year ban on this biofuels practice. He said during that period, more research or technical advances can be made to use agricultural wastes such as corn cobs, banana leaves etc., rather than crops themselves to produce fuel.

Biofuels may be less environmentally damaging alternative to petroleum but will seriously affect the poor and in the future others also with shortages of food crops.

In the US, the biofuels trend has already contributed to a sharp rise in food prices as farmers are converting from wheat, soya to corn, which is then turned to ethanol. Corn is easy to produce and manage, and with the high prices for biofuels use, the farmers will tend to produce more of it.

But the trend has contributed to a sharp rise in food prices as farmers, particularly in the US, switch production from wheat and soya to corn, which is then turned into ethanol.

The IMF also last week voiced concern that the increasing global reliance on grain as a source of fuel could have serious implications for the world's poor.

I agree with Ziegler, with growing population, the arable land is shrinking in size with many of them converting to homes and offices. With the limited lands, we need every ounce of them for food cultivation instead if people start to use it for biofuels, then the food supplies will lead to severe shortages. They should rely more on Solar and Wind power, one can't solve a problem with another problem, biofuels in this case.

DIY: Whiten your Teeth with Strawberries

Woman eating strawberry. Image: http://www.featurepics.com/

Do you want to whiten your teeth in minutes? A dentist recommends a simple method of using strawberry and baking soda and blending it together and applying the mixture on the teeth.
The method is suggested by Adina Carrel, DMA, a dentist in private practice at Manhattan Dental Arts in New York. It is a simple inexpensive home whitening method. The strawberry is combined with baking soda and a mixture creates a chemical called malic acid which acts as an astringent to remove tooth surface discoloration.

Together they become a natural tooth cleanser, cleans away stains from coffee, tea, sodas, and red wine. Dr. Carrel says this treatment won’t replace the whitening treatment used in dentist’s office, but it gives a quick and cheap way to whiten your teeth.

The recipe for this whitening method is as follows:

Ingredients:
1 ripe strawberry
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Directions:
Crush the strawberry to a pulp, then mix with the baking powder until blended. Use a soft toothbrush to spread the mixture onto your teeth. Leave on for 5 minutes, then brush thoroughly with toothpaste to remove the berry–baking soda mix. Rinse. (A little floss will help get rid of any strawberry seeds.) Carrel says you can apply once a week.

However don’t use this on a daily basis, the acid amount may damage the enamel on your teeth with prolonged use. So use it sparingly.

There is also another method you can use white distilled vinegar by brushing once or twice a week with white distilled vinegar. It whitens your teeth and eliminates bad breath. You can a little paste along with this if you can’t handle the taste of vinegar.

Some Neanderthals were redheads, fair and with freckles

Neanderthal and a Human with red hair. Image: MSNBC

Studies of Neanderthals bones find that they may have had pale skin, with red hair similar to modern humans and some had freckles in their hair. They also speculate they may have had a spectrum of red hair, from auburn to red to strawberry blonde.
German and European scientists are using genetic and physical evidence founds in fossils of Neanderthals to see what characteristic they might have possessed when they roamed freely for more than 230,000 years in the regions belonging to current Europe and some parts of Asia. They analyzed bones from two Neanderthals and found genetic information that exhibits their hair and skin characteristics.

Michael Hofreiter of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, one of the researchers said they can’t say precisely about the fossil they were examining but could predict the general population from the gene pool found in the fossil. He said among the Neanderthal there must have been a part of them (1 percent) who were redheaded.

Holger Rompler of the University of Leipzig, Carles Lalueza-Fox of the University of Barcelona, Spain extracted the mc1r gene variant from bones from two different regions, one was 43,000 year old Neanderthal from El Sidron, Spain and a 50,000 year old specimen from Monti Lessini, Italy. It is a unique gene responsible for producing a protein that helps regulate the balance between the red and yellow pigment pheomelanin and the black and brown eumelanin.

Modern people with inactive mc1r receptors tend to have red hair and pale skin. There are also other pigmentation genes that contribute to hair and skin coloring.

A previous study by Rompler found a variant of the same gene in woolly mammoth bones, indicating they might have a light colored coat skin.

In the current study, the researchers tweaked a human mc1r gene so that it matched the variant found in Neanderthals. When they put the gene into modern human cells, it functioned in melatonin production as the modern variants do, suggesting some Neanderthals had fair skin and red hair.

The Neanderthals bones were found at high latitudes, the scientists say the UV radiation might have been minimal there, as a result they might have more fair skin. The fair skin when it has little protection from the sunny rays, the individual will absorb enough of UV radiation to produce Vitamin D in sufficient amounts according to Hofreiter.

Lighter skin is adaptive because vitamin D production depends on UV radiation,"

And since there is wide variation of redheads in humans, the researchers think Neanderthals could also have featured a spectrum of shades, from auburn to brilliant red to strawberry blonde.

The results are show in detail in the journal Science available for subscribers.

Earlier this month, other scientists reported genetic evidence that Neanderthals may have spoken similar to humans.

Neanderthals disappeared 20,000 years ago.

What will they find next? That they favor redheads over others just like humans.

Apple helps kid attend class while battling cancer at home

The image “http://images.apple.com/education/profiles/belaire/images/belaire_header_index.png” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Christopher Laub undergoes chemotherapy treatment and attends school from home, thanks to Apple's iChat

Christopher Laub, fourth grade student, undergoing chemotherapy treatment, didn’t want to miss school. Apple helped him attend his classes from home. He and his classmates are excited with this experiment.
When Christopher Laub was in the third and fourth grades, was undergoing chemotherapy treatments for his leukemia but had to skip his classes because he was feeling sick and weak to attend. He missed his classmates but mostly the classes.

Chris's condition forced him to stay at home because even with slight exposure to outside germs would have posed a serious health risk. But with the help of his school, Bel Aire Elementary School and Apple Computers, they were able to make him attend school via Apple’s iChat video conferencing technology.

With the help of iChat, Chris was able to get connected with his classmates and continue his studies. He lovingly calls this system, “iCan”. The Principal of the Elementary School Patti Purcell and her staff along with Apple helped build this system for Chris.

The school sent the technology staff to Chris’s home and connected this software and showed him and his parents how the system works. They provided the family with a notebook and video conferencing software.

When Laub is ready to attend classes, he e-mails his teacher and they arrange a video conferencing. He starts the iChat AV and his iSight camera built in the notebook. Laub’s live images are shown in the classroom and Laub sees the images of the class live at his home. They are able to communicate with each other.

When they have a group assignment with Chris, the teacher puts the notebook in front of the group, so they both can communicate with each other. When the teacher in the class asks the question, the students tell him it is his turn and Chris answers the question.

Purcell said about this experiment:

It was so important for Christopher to feel that he was connected to the class, especially for the nonbook lessons such as Spanish and Social Studies,”

She said it is good Chris is able to attend classes this way, it is boosting his spirit and his classmates also. He has become so popular, now whenever there is a group assignment everyone wants Chris to be in their team.

Great job by both the school and Apple, I hope Chris fights out of this disease and maybe start working for Apple in the future.

Add Smiley Faces, Emoticons in Gmail

Yahoo! Mail, AOL and Hotmail all have smiley faces or emoticon features except Gmail service. Now there is a simpler way to add the smiley faces in your e-mail messages at Gmail.

The Yellow smiley faces or emoticons are quiet popular in the Chat and text messages, you can add this with other e-mail clients except Gmail. Labnol has found a way to add these emoticons. The video demonstrates the following method:

• Just resize the browser windows (the compose message window in Gmail) and open another browser window with this link.
• Drag and drop the image you like into the compose message window in Gmail.

The following method shows an alternate one:

• Open your Gmail account and compose a new e-mail message.
• Open another browser window or tabs (in Firefox) and click this link to open the different emoticons types available and click “view image” for the emoticon you like.
• Click Edit --> Select All --> Copy
• Click Edit --> Paste or Click your right button on the mouse and use the paste option.

With this method now you can have animated smiley faces or emoticons in your Gmail.

Gmail gets IMAP - Synchronize and Manage your mails from Outlook and iPhone

GMail has finally introduced IMAP integration, now you can synchronize and edit e-mails simultaneously from your outlook or Thunderbird, mobile, iPhone etc. It is currently available in few accounts, but will be extended to others.
It has long been overdue for GMail to have IMAP, GMail has POP services which are good but it is tedious. If you manage your accounts with Outlook or Thunderbird, you have to manage the mail twice, now you can manage (delete, read, move files across tags) either online or in Outlook or in an iPhone. It saves considerable time.

IMAP is easy to manage spam e-mails also, now you can delete them with one stroke either in Outlook or Thunderbird or in mobiles.

How to set this IMAP services with your GMail account?

• Open GMail and click “Settings” --> Forwarding and POP/IMAP --> Enable IMAP --> Save Changes.
• Open Outlook.
• Click the “Tools” menu, and select “E-mail Accounts...”
• Click “Add a new e-mail account”, and click “Next”.
• Choose “IMAP” as your server type by clicking the radio button, and click “Next”.
• Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

• Click “More Settings...” and then click the “Outgoing Server” tab.
• Check the box next to “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” and select “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”

• Click the “Advanced” tab, and check the box next to “This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)” under Incoming Server (IMAP) and enter “993” in the Incoming Server (SMTP) box.

• Check the box next to “This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)” under Outgoing Server (SMTP), and enter “465” in the Outgoing server (SMTP) box.
• Click OK.

To set IMAP in iPhone click here.

That’s it you are done, this may look like a number of steps, but it is similar to POP settings, but IMAP is much better to manage e-mails. Before I had to manage them twice, now just one. I tried this morning it works like a charm, now I have to change the settings for other accounts.

The video below shows instructions how to enable IMAP in iPhone.

New York City hires 720,000 good guys to fight pests

Ladybugs. Image: http://eroundlake.com/

New York City has welcomed 720,000 ladybugs into the city to help protect one of the biggest apartment complexes from aphids and mites. Instead of using chemical insecticides, they are using a natural one to ward off the pests.
Instead of hiring one guy like Superman or Spiderman to fight the villains, the New York City hired 720,000 good guys.

The Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village complex has been troubled recently with high numbers of aphids and mites in the building. Initially, they used pesticides to kill them off but for a large city complex it costs a lot of money. As an alternative, they turned to another natural insect: Ladybugs.

The ladybug hunts after the leaf-sucking aphids and mites which are commonly seen in shrubs, flowers and plants. A typical ladybug eats up to 50 pests a day, plus insect eggs. So, the city thinks these ladybugs will help terminate the aphids and mites.

It cost the city only $16.50 to buy 2,000 ladybugs which makes the complex’s owner Tishman Speyer happy, and he doesn't have to use chemical insecticides.

Eric Vinje, owner of Planet Natural, which supplied the pest-killers said:
In most cases, we reach for a can of pesticide - and we kill not only the 'bad guys,' but the 'good guys"'.

The good guys he is referring to are the ladybugs. He said by putting more good guys into the garden, it will help control the population of the pests.

In my opinion, it's fine as long it helps to control the main problem, but what happens when the ladybugs gets rid all of the other pests? Who will control them? Another set of good guys?

Nasal spray helps people fight their fears

Nasal Spray diagram. Image: Google

Australian researchers claim a nasal spray containing an antibiotic, used to treat tuberculosis may also help people to overcome fears of public speaking, performing karaoke and other public functions.
Dr. Adam Guastella, University of New South Wales, leader of this study found sprays containing D-Cycloserine (DCS) significantly reduced the symptoms of people afflicted with chronic social phobias.

Patients suffering from irrational fears normally undergo "exposure therapy", which involves people confronting the things they are frightened of the most.

Dr. Guastella did an experiment with 23 individuals showing social phobias and asked them to make a speech after taking small doses of DCS and having exposure therapy. He compared this group with others who didn’t take DCS or have any other treatment for their phobia problems.

He said the difference between the two groups was astonishing. The first group showed a marked improvement and reported that they found great improvements at work place and in social relationships.

Research in America suggests that as many as 13 in 100 people suffer from a social phobia and are worried about being watched, judged or criticized in public.

The first symptoms of social phobias usually arise at the age of 15, but they last for a long time if left untreated.

Scientists say that DCS has no effect on fear on its own, but enhances the therapy sessions by changing the neurotransmitters in the brain associated with learning to overcome fear.

DCS cannot accomplish this on its own, so one needs to have the regular therapy session along with it. I think that may be a disadvantage for those who want quick results. Since this DCS is used for tuberculosis treatment, they need to make sure it doesn’t have any side effects for others.

If you think this is not for you, then you should read Dale Carnegie’s “The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking (Mass Market Paperback)” and he has few other books that you may find useful. The following technique is employed in one of the Wodehouse novels, drink a shot of whiskey before you make a speech, just don’t over drink it.

Wind Vs. Hair

Wind Vs. Hair:

“Your hair makes a momentary veil,

And shields your face,

Even the wind that causes it,

Feels ashamed and pauses brief,

And lets your fingers twirl ‘em aside gentle

the black gold tresses of hair,

It is just not the wind that teases your face,

Even in the absence of the wind

the tresses themselves toy on over,

At the onset they send a few spies in stealth,

Then the whole army of tresses marches on

like the Greeks in Trojan Horse,

The wind aided by nature and curiosity,

The tresses aided by gravity and exuberance,

Both described in lore, poems and tales,

partners in crime for ages,

Don’t know who does the crime more,

It is like a chess game they play,

One trying to outdo the other,

But,

There is no one clear winner in this but you.”

Researchers neutralize HIV with Combination Therapy treatment

European researchers have found a way that successfully neutralizes the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with “combination antiretroviral therapy”. It prevents the virus from mutating and spreading, boosting the patients’ immune system.
Professor Jens Lundgren, University of Copenhagen, together with other members of the research group EuroSIDA, did a study and demonstrated that the immune system affected by the HIV viruses can be restored back to its normal position if the patients begin and continue to follow their course of treatment.

HIV viruses attack the body’s immune system so the viruses mutate and propagate rapidly causing decline in health and eventual death.

Different viruses enter into the body and since they don’t have an independent metabolism, they attack other cells and adopt the metabolism of the cells’. The influenza virus occupies cells in the nose, throat and lungs, the mumps attaches itself to the salivary glands of the ears, and the Polio virus uses the intestinal tract, blood and salivary glands. But when the body’s immune system is strong it will fight these viruses and try to stop them from taking over.

The HIV virus on the other hand is deadlier than other viruses, it attaches itself to a crucial part of the immune system, the CD4+T lymphocytes, which are white blood corpuscles that help the immune system to fight infections. When the HIV virus keeps attacking the CD4+T, its numbers fall as a result the immune system goes in decline and can’t prevent other viruses from attacking the body. With progressive attack and mutation, the HIV patient will end up getting AIDS.

Lundgren and his team developed a combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) to prevent this attack by the HIV. It prevents the viruses from forming and mutating, as a result the CD4+T cells begins to rise in numbers and their immune system gets stronger. Thus the immune system is able to restore back to its original state. The patient can then be considered to be free from this HIV disease.

They studied 1835 patients who started cART from EuroSIDA and studied whether the CD4+T cells were increasing. After the first year of cART treatment, they found the CD4 cells count increase by 100 cells per μL, with further application of treatment for a longer period, the CD4 cells increased by 50 cells per μL. Patients starting cART with low CD4 counts (less than 200 cells per μL) had significant rises in CD4 counts even after 5 years of cART.

In conclusion the researchers claim that normalization of CD4 counts can be obtained in HIV infected patients provided they follow cART treatment for a reasonable period of time. To date, it represents the most significant treatment for patients suffering from HIV.

If the costs are reasonable, it will bring a ray of hope to HIV patients. But this is not a cure all, they should still maintain clean health habits and practice safe sex.

Apple's Leopard has more 'wow factor' than Windows Vista

Apple will be launching the new Leopard Operating System for Mac October 26th. It has more than 300 new features compared to its previous Tiger OS. ZDNet says Mac OS has more wow factor than Vista.

Apple has listed all of the features for their new Mac OS X Leopard in one single page here and you can see the depth of features.

ZDNet browsed the new features and said though some of them are modified and tweaked a little, most of the features will make you say "wow" many times.

The video shows some of the best features of Leopard OS.

Here are some features ZDNet thinks are the best of features in this new OS.

1. Google Map Address: You can view a detailed map of any address in the Address book by holding down the Control key while clicking any address. A Google Map shows in a separate window.

2. Updated Folder Action Support: Folder actions now have their own server, and each folder action now runs its own copy of the new Folder Actions Dispatcher application.

3. Scriptable System Preference & Applications Do more with AppleScript. A number of system preferences in Leopard are now scriptable, including the Dock, Security, Exposé, Accounts, and Networking — as well as a number of features in iChat

4. UI Recording and Playback Use a new action called Watch Me Do that lets you record a user action (like pressing a button or controlling an application without built-in Automator support) and replay as an action in a workflow.

5. Copy files between Mac OS X and Windows: Now you can copy and paste files from Windows OS to Mac OSX seamlessly, the new Leopard works with Windows FAT32 disk format.

6. Improved Full-Screen Interface: With this new full screen interface, you can access all of DVD’s features with your mouse. The top and bottom regions show access to onscreen semitransparent displays for a wealth of controls and settings.

7. Time Skip: You can skip ahead or backwards five seconds to replay the feature you are watching.

8. Scratched Disc Recovery: With this new technology, it will play even damaged disks, it will avoid scratched areas and jump over it and play the rest. So if you can’t watch it on Windows you can watch now in Mac.

9. Icon Preview: You can watch a preview of the files; it displays icons that are actual thumbnail preview of the documents.

Here are a few of them I find interesting:

10. Wikipedia in Dictionary: You can see the Wikipedia documents in the computer when connected to the internet, no need to go to Wikipedia. In the dictionary, it gets the access and shows the documents in the desktop in the form of a widget.

11. iChat movie theatre: You can show any file or videos from the iChat window to others, any files that can be accessed from the computer can be shown to your friends or contacts.

There are many more features and by the time Leopard is released more will be added because it is open source and can handle hundreds of applications. I don’t have a Mac, but just by browsing those features you can see how versatile Mac is.

Google's Homepage Goes Black in San Francisco

Google decides to go all back in its search engine in San Francisco to support the “Lights Out San Francisco”. The search engine will change its homepage color from white to black for the whole day.
San Francisco city is promoting a campaign today named “Lights Out San Francisco” which invites everyone to participate by changing the entire city of San Francisco to install at least one compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) and turn of all lights at home and at work from 8:00 pm to 9.00 pm Pacific Standard Time. If you watch the Google Map, the entire city may look dark, even their Googleplex.

The reason for the campaign is to generate awareness about Global warming and by turning the lights out for one hour, they expect to save as much as 15 percent of energy consumed on an average Saturday night.

To support this environmental campaign, Google search engine will turn its homepage color from white to black all day. This change will appear only in San Francisco.

Google said in its homepage:

Given our company's commitment to environmental awareness and energy efficiency, we strongly support the Lights Out campaign, and have darkened our homepage today to help spread awareness of what we hope will be a highly successful citywide event.

One might ask why it doesn’t do this on a permanent basis if it helps reduce energy consumption, but studies have found turning black doesn’t help much in conserving the energy.

If you also want to join the campaign and turn off lights for one hour click this link here.

Do you use CFL at homes or you are still debating to switch? Most of the stores are slowly phasing out regular fluorescent lamps, so hopefully everyone will buy CFL or LED bulbs in the future.

Google: The $200 Billion Gorilla

Google announced its report yesterday showing higher earnings than expected and now Google has a hit an all time in stocks today. Its total value exceeds $200 billion mark in terms of market value.
Google is growing at a staggering rate, it stocks reached an all time high value of $658 and is currently at $644 per share. The total market value for Google exceeds $200 billion mark, more than News Corp, Disney, Viacom and CBS combined. It released its earnings report yesterday; it shot up 57 percent from last years to $4.23 billion dollars with net income totaled $1.32 billion dollars. It is just not revenues from Adsense, 65% of the earnings comes from Google owned sites.

With this new market value, Google has become the second largest technology company in the world, trailing only the Microsoft.

Thanks to its hefty earnings and income, Google was able to hire Jaiku (Microblogging), FeedBurner (RSS) and GrandCentral (Web phone service). Even with these acquisitions, Google was able to show high earnings.

While others like Yahoo don’t have the buying power like Google, all they can do is watch.

They have hired nearly 16,000 full time employees so far and are on a hiring spree (2,214 new employees since the month of June this year). Even with the current employees pool they reached this $200 billion figure, imagine what it will be with all the new hiring. Also, one should wonder why they are hiring so many unless it is for a giant project, we are yet to see.

Despite its growth, Google doesn’t look threatening like Microsoft or try to be a monopoly.

Man Builds $30,000 Jumbo Jet Simulator in his Bedroom

A Flight Simulator in a bedroom

A 47 year old flight enthusiast quit his graphic designer job to build a full sized aircraft simulator in a room in his house. He plans to do flight simulation business for those who want to get training.
One man builds a Cruise ship in his home and now this, John Davis, who builds a full fledged Boeing 747 simulator in his house in a spare bed room. John Davis worked as a graphic designer to build this flight simulator. It took him eight years of labor and £15,000 in funds to build this simulator.

In a Q&A session with John Davis by Engadget, he said he used a Microsoft Flight Simulator for the visuals, Aerowinx PS1 and 30 different programs. The screen measure 12 feet x 9 feet in dimensions which he built it himself and added a 19 inch flat screen on either side. He got the rest of the parts from the internet, autopilot system, throttles, and weather radar. He also built the cockpit by himself.

Now, he has completed, he wants to start a flight simulation business and whoever wants to get trained can do so for between £65 ($130) for one hour and £420 ($850) for six hours.

He holds a glider pilot’s license but said he is not good at math to fly proper planes. But he seems very good in putting all this together, even the best math student will have a tough time to build.

Here are some of the pics of the simulator:

High-resolution image hints at 'Mona Lisa's' eyebrows

The image “http://www.digitaljournal.com/images/photo/4badfe596d59670ee2aa8a916f8a30d727c49bb4.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Mona Lisa painting by Leonardo da Vinci.

A French engineer has uncovered evidence about the eyebrows and eyelashes of the “Mona Lisa” painting by Leonardo da Vinci. He used a high-definition camera to prove his theory.
Pascal Cotte, a French engineer and inventor, designed a high-definition camera and analyzed the “Mona Lisa” to look for clues about they eyebrows and eyelashes. The device scanned a 240 million pixel image using 13 light spectrums with ranges including ultraviolet and infrared.

He reproduced the painting in the form of a high-definition photo of 150,000 dots per inch which magnified “Mona Lisa” painting by nearly 24 times. When he examined the photo, he saw a single brushstroke of a single hair just above the left brow. Thus, he says Leonardo da Vinci, in his original painting, had eyebrows and eye lashes.

Cotte said the reason the lashes are not seen today because of possible fading of color pigments used in the painting. He also gave another reason to the media: Poor cleaning of the painting over the years may have damaged the eyebrows and eye lashes.

As CNN reports:
And if you look closely at the eye of 'Mona Lisa' you can clearly see that the cracks around the eye have slightly disappeared, and that may be explained that one day a curator or restorer cleaned the eye, and cleaning the eye, removed, probably removed the eyelashes and eyebrow".

Cotte not only found eye lashes -- he also made other discoveries with the high-resolution image. The infrared layer of the image showed that fingers of the Mon Lisa’s left hand were originally painted in a slightly different position than in the final portrait. He said the model held a lap blanket, but in today’s image the blanket is obscured completely, the infrared scanning showed the faded pigment used to color the blanket. Many wondered why her fingers were in that position; Cotte’s analysis showed the model held a blanket with her wrists.

Cotte’s work also involved trying to restore the painting in its original configuration without the faded colors, they call it a “virtual” restoration. If he does that, the Mona Lisa painting will exhibit a different hue of colors.

When it comes to the famous “Mona Lisa” smile, he said it used to look wider than it appears today (even her face would have wider in the original version). He says it may be due to shrinkage of the fabric and the pigments.

When Da Vinci painted the “Mona Lisa” it seems he had been painting this for more than a decade -- almost until his death. He used to say that “Art is never finished, only abandoned”.

The results of Cotte’s study are on display at the Metreon in San Francisco, as part of the exhibit “Da Vinci: An Exhibition of Genius”. Maybe Lensman can check this one for us.

You can watch a video here.

In my opinion, with eyebrows and eyelashes, the painting would have been more beautiful. The mystery of the painting continues.

Neanderthal were Chatty cavemen?

This image is an artist's rendition of a Neanderthal family. Scientists have found DNA evidence which suggests that Neanderthals might have used language in ways similar to humans. Image: NASA

German Scientists claim that Neanderthals might have spoken just like humans do now; they found genes connected to talking behavior in Neanderthal’s DNA, which matches with the human's.
Neanderthals diverged from human species nearly 300,000 years ago but became extinct some 30,000 years ago after successfully living side by side with humans for a long period of time. They are our closest extinct relatives. Their remains were discovered about 150 years ago, which has helped the scientific community to understand more about their behaviors. They had many similar characteristics like the human, in hunting, making tools etc, but their speaking skills were considered either rudimentary or nothing at all just grunts and groans, which has become a fodder for comedy now.

But a study of their DNA by German scientists, showed a striking behavior in them, analysis of their bones collected from a cave in northern Spain, they had a gene, FOXP2, similar to the humans. This FOXP2 is the only gene that is considered to be influential in man’s speech and language skills. People with an abnormal copy of this gene showed speech and language problems.

This FOXP2 gene is found in many species from fish to alligators to songbirds. For example FOXP2 gene found in Chimpanzee differs from the human’s by just two amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. The difference doesn’t allow the Chimpanzee to speak as freely as the humans.

Previously some research have been done how this FOXP2 gene has evolved over the years and have found man must have developed spoken skills fewer than 200,000 years ago. And the gene that they found in Neanderthals matches exactly with the Human’s. Thus, paleogeneticist Johannes Krause of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, says that Neanderthals might also have spoken just like the early humans.

Krause said there might be other genes involved in talking behavior, but so far they have identified only the FOXP2 gene. Later if they find additional genes for speech behavior they can analyze those in Neanderthals as well.

Some speculated that Neanderthals might have had this gene by cross breeding with humans, but their Y chromosomes don’t match indicating that may not be the only source. Krause thinks the Neanderthals might have developed this FOXP2 gene independently and might have used languages to communicate with each other.

Krause and his colleagues detailed their findings online Oct. 18 in the journal Current Biology.

If this is true they should check the caves for writing patterns, maybe they might have left some evidence there. They might have also had a Shakespeare amidst them. Will the comedians change their behavior in making fun of Neanderthals after this?

My friend sent me this, it is an awesome video of Cockatoo.

This Cockatoo was rescued by an Animal shelter some months ago, since then it has completely amazed the pet rescue center with its incredible dancing. Some thought it must be a fake, so the USA Today reporters went in person and saw this Cockatoo bird dance even better than some humans could dance.

The bird dances to the music by Backstreet Boys, "Everybody (Backstreet is Back)", whose video is shown here nothing compares to the above video though.

From Wikipedia about Cockatoo birds:

Cockatoos share many features with other parrots including the characteristic curved beak shape and a zygodactyl foot, with two forward toes and two backwards toes. They differ, however in a number of characteristics, including the often spectacular movable headcrest, the presence of a gall bladder and some other anatomical details, and their lack of the Dyck texture feather composition which causes the bright blues and greens seen in true parrots. Also Cockatoo species are, on average, larger than the average size of true parrots; however, the cockatiel, the smallest Cockatoo, is a small bird, and some of the largest parrots including the Hyacinth Macaw (the longest parrot) and the flightless Kakapo (the heaviest parrot), are true parrots. Placement of the cockatoos as a separate family is fairly undisputed, but it is not resolved whether or not other living lineages of parrots (such as the lories and lorikeets) are as distinct as they are.

DNA pioneer's theory: Africans are less intelligent than Westerners

Dr. James Watson, Nobel Prize Winner, says black people are less intelligent than white people and the idea that “equal powers of reason” is a delusion. He claimed these differences could be proved by gene theory within the next decade.
Watson won the Nobel Prize for his pioneering work in unraveling the DNA, but his latest claims definitely won’t get a Nobel Prize maybe bricks. He shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for medicine with his British colleague Francis Crick and New Zealand-born Maurice Wilkins for discovering the structure of DNA.

In a newspaper interview he said Western polices needs to be changed because they have the wrong assumption that black people are as clever as their white counterparts. He said testing results shows otherwise. He said people who have to deal with black employees find it is not true compared with white employees.

He further went on and claimed genes responsible for creating differences in human intelligence could be found within a decade and will prove his theory. It immediately drew widespread condemnation from many sources.

He is currently on a speaking tour in England and promoting his book “Avoid Boring People: Lessons from a Life in Science”. He spoke at many venues including the Science Museum in London and relayed the same controversial message he gave to the news reporters. The speech in the museum was organized by the Dana Centre, which held a discussion last night on the history of scientific racism. And to it he added another one.

The newly formed Equality and Human Rights Commission, successor to the Commission for Racial Equality, said it was studying Dr Watson's remarks and will decide a course of action.

It is just not his speech; his views are also reflected in this book in which he says:

"There is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so."

There was a similar controversy in the 90s by an American political scientist Charles Murray who wrote the book “The Bell Curve” and suggested that the differences in IQ are genetic in nature and discussed there is a racial divide in intelligence. Some scientists called his work as “Scientific racism”.

Keith Vaz, Labor chairman of the Home Affairs Select committee voiced his protest and said it is sad to see a distinguished scientist making a baseless and offensive claim. He said the scientific community will surely reject Dr. Watson’s prejudice.

These comments serve as a reminder of the attitudes which can still exists at the highest professional levels."

This is not the first controversy Dr. Watson is involved in through out his years he has made many biased comments against sexuality, race and politics. Once the respected journal Science wrote about him and said that Dr. Watson has long been a wild man to many of his peers and his colleagues tend to hold their breath whenever he makes a comment that is not relevant to his work. They would do the same with the latest comments.

Some of the controversies he was involved in are as follows:

• In 1997, he told a British newspaper that women should have the right to abort a baby if tests are available to prove that it will become a homosexual at a later stage.
• He said there is a link between skin color and sex drive, and said that black people have higher libidos.
• He argued to have genetic screening and engineering done so stupidity could be cured.
• He also claimed that beauty could be genetically manufactured.

Steven Rose, a professor of biological sciences at the Open University and a founder member of the Society for Social Responsibility in Science, said to the newspaper:

This is Watson at his most scandalous. He has said similar things about women before but I have never heard him get into this racist terrain. If he knew the literature in the subject he would know he was out of his depth scientifically, quite apart from socially and politically.”

Anti-racism campaigners such as 1990 Trust are planning to see how they can take action against him in the context of racial hatred laws in the country. They said they can’t imagine a man of such distinction will perpetuate racism in such a manner and he is fueling bigotry.

In his own word, Dr. Watson said he is in favor of genetic screening to cure stupidity, maybe he can volunteer first to test it and see how it works. And also check his DNA to see any racist gene is embedded in it. If everyone given the same level of education under same set of conditions will excel the same and there will be fewer differences between them and our world could have progressed many times than what we are now. Thanks to Dr. Watson and many people like him, the world is not progressing as fast as it could.

Locationbar, Firefox Extension for Safe Browsing

Phishers send e-mails and ask you to click the link for additional information, but the link hides codes with a technique called “URL obfuscation”, they look legit but they are not. Locationbar extension, protects you from visiting fake sites.
Phishers use misleading web addresses to make the users think they are visiting a different site than where they are. For example, Webware gives these two URLs’ example, the first one looks like Bank of America, but it is not, it is Google. In actual case, the eventual site will be more deadly and deceive you easily like fake PayPal sites which have the PayPal look but they are not.

http://208.67.217.230/nwshp?www.bankofamerica.com http://www.microsoft.com@208.67.217.230

The second example shows the site as Microsoft.com, so you will think safe to click this link again, this is a Google site. The “@” sign usually refers to the username. So be aware of this when you click. To avoid visiting the wrong sites, Locationbar Firefox Extension does a great job in identifying which site the link belongs to, as shown in the picture.

When you click a long link, it highlights only the main domain name, so you are assured that you are visiting a safe site not some phishing site. But when you want to copy the whole URL, when you click the location bar with your mouse, it will show the full URL.

This is a must have extension, you will see its usefulness right away. It is easy to install, requires no configuration. Firefox 3.0 will incorporate this extension it seems but till then you can download it here and protect yourself from visiting fake sites.

For more tutorials on Firefox extensions, click here.

Sex, Nazi, burrito and Viagra: Who Googles what?

http://newmedia.umaine.edu/images/Jon%20Ippolito/google_logo_halloween_d-(mip.jpg

Google provided statistics to the public highlights the interests of various countries and some of the popular keywords used to search the web. Some of the popular search terms are Hitler, burrito, sex, Viagra, Botox and others.
Google Inc. provided statistics today and showed the Internet users in Egypt, India and Turkey are the world’s most frequent searchers for Web sites using the keyword “Sex” in its Google search engine. Germany, Mexico and Austria were world’s top three searchers for the word “Hitler”, still shows the obsession of Hitler in Germany which is scary. Another Hitler associated word “Nazi” was a popular search item in Chile, Australia and the United Kingdom.

All these data were retrieved from 2004 to current year using Google Trends, which lists the favored search items every day.
The word “gay” was popular in Chile, Mexico and Colombia. And the word “Jihad” was popular in Morocco, Indonesia and Pakistan, probably the countries Osama is targeting.

Canada seems to have a preference for the word “Tom Cruise” along with United States and Australia. Britney Spears is also popular in Canada after Mexico and Venezuela.

Here are the top searchers for some keywords (shown in order from first to third place):

"Terrorism" - Pakistan, Philippines, Australia
"Hangover" - Ireland, United Kingdom, United States
"Burrito" - United States, Argentina, Canada
"Iraq" - United States, Australia, Canada
"Taliban" - Pakistan, Australia, Canada
"Tom Cruise" - Canada, United States, Australia
"Britney Spears" - Mexico, Venezuela, Canada
"Homosexual" - Philippines, Chile, Venezuela
"Love" - Philippines, Australia, United States
"Botox" - Australia, United States, United Kingdom
"Viagra" - Italy, United Kingdom, Germany
"David Beckham" - Venezuela, United Kingdom, Mexico
"Kate Moss" - Ireland, United Kingdom, Sweden
"Dolly Buster" - Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia
"Car bomb" - Australia, United States, Canada
"Marijuana" - Canada, United States, Australia
"IAEA" - Austria, Pakistan, Iran

Many marketers use such trends to attract more visitors to their sites. I search 100s of items every day in Google but are totally different.

Stanford University finds blood test to help identify Alzheimer's disease

The image “http://www.digitaljournal.com/images/photo/287575341_c5714052e0_m.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Identifying Alzheimer’s disease is not an easy task and is very difficult to diagnose, but researchers at Stanford University have developed a blood test that will identify patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
Nearly 4.5 millions of Americans have Alzheimer’s disease and kills more than 66,000 each year. It is a degenerative brain disease that saps memory, sows confusion; patients lose their ability to speak, walk or swallow and eventually kills them. It is a difficult disease to diagnose and treat. Most of the existing methods to diagnose Alzheimer’s are complex and expensive, for example the MRI scans, which detects shrinkages in parts of brain targeted by the disease, is a time consuming process.

Identifying the disease early will be very helpful to the doctors and the families to cope up with the patient. Scientists have worked many years to develop a simple way to diagnose this dreaded disease, thanks to a team of Stanford university researchers it has come a reality in the form of a simple blood test.

Professor Tony Wyss-Coray, the leader of a group of Stanford University researchers has outlined their method in an online edition of the British journal Nature Medicine. It is a unique method that is able to spot Alzheimer’s patients by screening for a set of 18 chemical signals that show up in the blood of people suffering from this disease.

The 18 different molecules are drawn from a phrase book of chemical chatter that occurs among cells in the body. Together, they present a pattern that with surprising consistency appears in the blood of Alzheimer's patients.

Wyss-Coray said these 18 molecules are signaling proteins that cells use to communicate with each other. There are 120 proteins that are found in the blood circulation and among them these 18 show the behavior of Alzheimer’s. They developed a test that will light up when the 18 molecules are present in the blood sample and identify whether patient has this disease or not.

They tested the efficacy of this blood test by analyzing existing Alzheimer’s patients who were already diagnosed by doctors; they found a 90 percent accuracy rate (38 out of 42 patients). It also classified a non-Alzheimer’s disease with an 87 percent accuracy (34 out of 39 patients), who do not have the illness but suffer from other dementias or mild cognitive impairments.

In another test, they were able to predict accurately whether the patient will get Alzheimer’s in the near future. They tested stored samples of patients and predicted Alzheimer’s disease in 20 of 22 patients, who then developed Alzheimer’s two to five years later.

Though the experiment used only a small number of patients, the method of identifying Alzheimer’s via a blood test seems promising and commercial reproduction of this testing method will be available soon in the next few years.

UCSF professor Dr. Lennart Mucke, director of the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease said this technology shows high potential and could work well with existing tools to identify Alzheimer’s:

This study shows that the chemical fingerprint found in the blood of these patients was pretty reliable. It could be a terrific addition to our diagnostic toolbox."

The test initially will be used in research labs, and later will be commercialized by Satoris, Inc., founded by Wyss-Coray. The test will be ready in two years after additional studies are done.

Making Sense Out of Food Expiration Dates

Breads

Food companies use different terminologies to convey how long their food remains fresh, some use “Best if used by”, “Born on”, “Freshness Date” etc. This article gives tips on how to make sense of these different expiry dates.
Different products at groceries stores use different expiry dates and makes the shopper confused when dealing with so many terminologies.

Some labels have such a small font size you need a magnifying glass to find and read it. Some packages have expiry dates such as “Best if used by 5/4” which doesn’t mention the year, and sometimes a label comes from Europe where it's not clear if the first number represents the day of the month or the month itself. Thanks to the government, these dates are as confusing as their policies.

However, there are some standards to list ingredients on a label that some don’t follow. Honestly, the government should set some guidelines so everyone follows the same rules.

In recent news, Gomestic.com has just published a list of terminologies and their meanings. Some are straight forward in meaning, while others are confusing:

Use by, Best if used by, or a Quality Assurance date:

Previously, we assumed is the date by which we should consume the product. But the actual meaning is it will be still fine to eat, but it won’t be as nutritious after that date. For products in this category, try to consume products before then if you want the full nutrition advertised in the box.

Sell by or Pull date:

These dates are meant for the retailer so they can sell a product by that date. It doesn’t mean the product will go bad. Also, it gives a hint to stock these items in the front and put newer items behind them. Usually you will see this with milk, which usually lasts more than a week after the expiry date.

Pack or Package Date:

This is usually found in the meat section where they cut or grind fresh meat. It simply indicates the date it was packed and doesn’t give any information about how long it will last. In my opinion, retailers should be forced to put the actual expiry date of the meat so it's not confusing.

Born On date:

Beer usually uses this term. Anheuser-Bush started using this terminology to say how fresh their beer is, as they claim their beers are fresh for 110 days after this “Born On” date.

Coded date:

This is like a bar code found on products. It indicates where it was manufactured, when, and other important information. In case of recalls, a retailer users this information to identify and quickly deal with bad products. It doesn't specify how long a product will last.

Use by, or Expiration date:

Food should not be consumed after this date, as it's not safe. It is best to discard the product after this expiry date.

Freshness date:

This is similar the “Best if used by” terminology; after this date it doesn’t retain freshness, but again, it doesn’t say much about how long a product will last. You usually see this terminology with breads.

After reviewing this list, I really wish food companies could keep it simple so we can follow dates easily. It's a confusing mess otherwise.

Do you find these terms confusing?

Humans May Stay Young For 400 Years

Aging Process. Image: beautyanalysis.com

A biochemist researcher at the University of California, San Francisco claims than human lifespan can be extended up to 400 years and they will remain young for the bulk of those years. It can be done by suppressing a gene that control aging.
Cynthia Kenyon, a biochemist, has demonstrated the theory in a lab by increasing the life span of tiny worms called Caenorhabditis elegan by up to six times their normal life span. How? Simply by suppressing a single gene.

This regulator gene named daf-2 along with other genes appear to control aging not only in worms, but also in flies, mice and possibly humans. If the same technique can be extended to humans, they can live as much as 400 years. Another benefit with this technique is the person stays young for longer periods of time and face fewer deadly diseases that afflict the elderly.

Diet is also a major contributing factor as proved in the worm study. Sugar intake turns on a genetic sequence that increases the amount of insulin produced by an organism, which in turn causes the body to demand more sugar. As a result, this damages the cells in the body leading to slow degradation of cells that contribute to aging. Red wine and green tea, on the other hand, has been shown to help repair cells and contribute to an increased lifespan.

The worms showed vigor with their increased lifespan until the very end of their lives. If extended to human, they will remain young for years, growing old only slowly. Since many diseases such as Alzheimer’s Huntington’s and some cancers affect only the elderly, this technique will enable to either put them off or delay their onset.

According to this blog post:
"Age is the single largest risk factor for an enormous number of diseases,' says Kenyon. 'So if you can essentially postpone aging, then you can have beneficial effects on a whole wide range of disease."

Kenyon also talked about immortality like some of the germs which live for longer periods. In the life span of a cell, two forces are involved, the force of destruction and the force of prevention, maintenance and repair. If the maintenance genes are increased a bit, they will be able to defend more against the damaging and the deterioration of the cells, making the cells live longer. If this can be done on a consistent basis then the cells will live for a long time.

She has proved this technique in worms, but to prove this on humans, it's going to take a long time. And do we really need a life span of 400 years? If there is a limited population then it is fine, but with a large population, it will be too much to manage resources, I think. Besides, one wouldn’t want people like Osama, Saddam, and Hitler, to live long and cause more destruction.

Here is a newspaper article, the author seemed to have met Dr. Kenyon. You can find more information about this topic.

The worms in question are transparent and about a millimeter long. A favorite of geneticists because of their simple anatomy and small number of genes, they wriggle around on a clear gel of worm-edible bacteria in the lab of Cynthia Kenyon, a molecular geneticist at UCSF's new Mission Bay campus.

Normally, these roundworms (Caenorhabditis elegans) live for about 20 days. But when genetically tweaked by Kenyon and her team last year, they have lived an average of 125 days, six times normal -- the equivalent of you or me living to over 400 years old.

....

She is a Herbert Boyer Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at UCSF. She trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then at Cambridge University in England under the molecular biology pioneer Sydney Brenner, co-winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Nobel watchers expect Kenyon to win one someday, too.

iPhone report: most owners left Treos, Sidekicks behind

A recent study by NPD Group shows many iPhone buyers switched their phones from Palm Treo and T-Mobile Sidekicks. And also many switched their phone carrier from Alltel and T-Mobile services to AT&T.

Apple iPhone. Image. Engadget

A study was conducted by the NPD Group, a leading consumer and retail information company, to analyze where the new buyers of iPhone came from. They found that iPhone was bridging a gap between the content focused feature phones (like T-Mobile Sidekick) and productivity focused smartphones (like Palm Treo).

They conducted surveys from more than 13,000 consumers who purchased a new mobile within the last 30 days and among them they found 200 purchased a new iPhone. The new buyers, most of them owned Palm Treos before and they switched to iPhone. They found that the initial iPhone buyers were 10 times more likely than other new phone buyers to have previously owned a Treo and three times more likely to have owned a T-mobile phone.

Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD said the new owners loved the iPhone’s Internet and media capabilities, which their previous phones did also, but they liked the ease of use in iPhone.

Rubin said the owners of iPhones are less likely to be a Blackberry owner mainly because of lack of corporate e-mail support. So there is less defection in Blackberry phone owners.

Among phone carriers, Alltel and T-Mobile lost many of its users to iPhone’s AT&T service. Also, the exclusivity agreement between iPhone and AT&T helped this switch. Sprint and Verizon also lost customers but not nearly to the same degree as Alltel and T-Mobile. The reason they lost a little because of their 3G Networks, direct music downloads to their phones, a rich video and data content.

One of my friends is selling Palm cases and accessories, he said his sales are dwindling and he cited iPhone as the reason. The prices of iPhone and Treo are comparable once all the data rates are included, under this condition; many prefer iPhone for its ease of use and design. Many criticize iPhone that it doesn’t have many applications, but Apple is currently working on it, doesn’t want its phone to crash too much at this stage. But here is a free list of applications you can use with iPhone, which are comprehensive that covers a wide range of software. Once Apple releases Leopard operating system, one can expect many applications that will be added to iPhone like Palm applications.

4 terabytes hard drive for desktops, 1 terabyte for laptops by 2011

Hitachi will soon launch hard drives that are nanoscale in size smaller than the width of the hair. The newer hard drive will quadruple current storage limits to 4 terabytes for desktop computers and 1 terabyte for laptops by the year 2011.
Current computers have a maximum 1 Terabyte (1024 Gigabytes), but with Hitachi’s new hard drive technology, the computers in 2011 will have a capacity as high as 4 terabytes, enough to store 1 million books, 250 hours of high definition video or a quarter million songs. In a laptop you can hold 62,500 songs and have a jukebox of your entire collection and more.

Hitachi say the increased space is possible because its researchers have shrunken a key component in hard drives to a nanoscale. Thus it has created the world’s smallest disk drive heads in the 30 nanometer to 50 nanometer ranger about 2,000 times smaller than the width of an average human hair. It will be like a wafer thin hard drive.

A hard drive has a metal disk inside that spins as an arm with an electromagnetic head at its tip hovers over it. The head reads bits of data by registering the magnetic bearing of the particles on the disk.

The smaller hard drives will help the computers to become thinner, consume less energy, make computers and laptops lighter and require less cooling.

The technology uses a well known one called GMR or giant magnetoresistance, which was the basis of the work of two European scientists who won the Nobel Prize in physics last week.

The GMR helped technology in the early 2000s, which made hard drives to double in capacity every year, but the GMR based heads posed a limitation as a result further increase was not possible. The scientists were able to replace this with an entirely different kind of head; as a result they were able to make wafer thin hard drives with improved reader head.

John Best, chief technologist for Hitachi's data-storage unit said to the media:

We changed the direction of the current and adjusted the materials to get good properties,"

Other hard drive companies are also working on similar technology, so we will see a number of competing hard drives in the market all based on this new type of GMR-based technology.

Can’t imagine what one can do with a 4 Terabyte hard drive, maybe we will find a use for it with high definition videos downloads. But first they should increase the broadband speed, it is terrible.

Tuna Fishing Fleets In The Pacific Pose Danger To Wildlife At Sea

A worker prepares tuna for auction at a Tokyo fish market. Image: Smhu.com.au

Japan’s long line southern bluefin tuna fleet nets large amount of bluefin tuna but
also captures thousands of albatrosses, sharks and marine turtles, decimating their population according to a WWF report.
Long line fishing techniques are adopted by many countries in the sea, where they cast a long and wide net and capture anything that gets in its way.

The Japanese who love southern bluefin tuna have used this technique for a number of years and are very successful with it. But the only problem is the net doesn’t just catch tuna, but everything along with it.

The WWF report found that annually 13,500 seabirds die getting caught in this fishing method, 10,000 of them are albatrosses (more than 22 species of albatrosses, of which 19 are endangered). The Japan’s long line southern bluefin tuna fleet killed between 6,000 and 9,000 seabirds per year in the 2001 and 2002 fishing seasons respectively. These figures will be high in the recent years with better technologies employed in fishing.

Dr. Simon Cripps, Director of WWF’s Global Marine Program said these fleets are fishing blindly with no consideration for other species in the sea. The countries employed in using long fleets should show moral responsibility and reduce the toll and devastation.

The new report titled “Behind the Facade: A Decade of Inaction on Non-Target Species in Southern Bluefin Tuna Fisheries” says the members of the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna are not doing enough to stem the endangered wild life populations trapped in the nets and reducing chronic over fishing.

Dr. Cripps said in the report:
Currently, the commission only requires the use of tori poles, devices used to scare away seabirds from fishing lines, whereas they should be calling for a whole suite of bycatch reduction measures to be enforced”.

The report urges members of the CCSBT to take effective actions immediately, submit records on the impact of southern bluefin tuna fishing on non-target species, and allow an on-board observe to monitor the program so everyone complies with the rules.

Southern bluefin tuna are migratory fish found mainly in the southern waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is a prized fish in Japan but also fished by other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and several other Asian countries. Long line fishing fleets harvest more than two thirds of the Southern bluefin tuna compared to other methods.

In my opinion, governments and researchers can work with the fishing community and design a better fishing line that will catch only certain fish, and let others escape easily when trapped.

Scientists reveal 'What It's Like To Die'

Death. Image: Twainquotes.com

The scientists have revealed what it is like when faced with the different types of death based on accounts from lucky survivors and medical advancements in the field. Most die because of lack of oxygen to the brain.

New Scientist magazine has dwelled deep into the subject of death, what happens to the human body as they die from different forms of death from being burnt alive to drowning and decapitation. All death have the basic end result, a lack of oxygen in the brain ends the life.

Here are different forms of death and how one does feel when they experience the various causes of death:

Drowning:

Victims mostly panic and try to hold their breath for 30 to 90 seconds. Survivors say they feel a “tearing and burning” sensation as water enter the lungs, but follows quickly with a serene feeling and tranquility. Lack of oxygen in the body results in loss of consciousness, the heart stops functioning and a brain failure.

Heart attack:

The most common symptom for this is a “squeezing” chest pain or the heart feels a high pressure because the heart muscle struggles for oxygen. The heart is disrupted beating normally as a result the heart stops functioning. The person loses consciousness in about 10 seconds and death follows few minutes later.

Loss of blood:
It causes “hemorrhagic shock”, whoever loses blood 1.5 liters or more feels weak, thirsty and anxious. When they lose more blood, they feel dizzy and are confused leading to eventual unconsciousness.

Electrocution:
When a person is electrocuted under home conditions, they lose consciousness in 10 seconds, a higher current through the heart and brain also results in quick unconsciousness. In a death sentence in an electric chair, the person dies from heating of the brain.

Fall from a height:
The survivors from the falls have said they had a feeling that time had slowed down. The scientists did a study of suicide jumps from San Francisco’s 246 foot high Golden Gate bridge and found many died instantaneously because of collapsed lungs, exploded hearts and damage to organs from broken ribs.

Hanging:
Correct hanging procedures will cause death by strangulation in 10 seconds, but an incorrect one will lead to many minutes of suffering and will die of asphyxiation when left hanging.

Fire:
Burns cause intense pain but doesn’t lead to death directly, only the pain feeling is lost, but they die mostly because of inhaling toxic gases and asphyxiation.

Decapitation:
Even after beheading there is life in the body, the brain functions as long as seven seconds and die because of lack of oxygen to the brains. From reports of guillotine executions in France, some said they found movements of the eyes and mouth even after 30 seconds of beheading.

It is scary, but it is inevitable. We don’t have much choice to choose what type of death. The Buddhists and the Hindus believe Karma is responsible for the choice of death.. But whatever it I just wish it was peaceful.

iPod named all time best gadget ever

iPod voted Best Gadget of All Time. Image: Sun.co.uk

The T3 Gadget Awards considered as the Oscars of the technology world, selects iPod as the Best Gadget of All time. Also, iPhone, iTunes, Mac Laptop won other top technology awards.
The digital music player iPod was the runaway winner in the Best Gadget of All Time category over other products like Sony Walkman, Sony PS2, and Nintendo Gameboy. It is hard to pick over these classic products, but iPods generated the more buzz and embraced a wide range of spectrum from the young to the old unlike other products. So, it is a worthy winner in this category.

Apple won six major awards in the T3 Gadget Awards. The iPhone won the other major prestigious award, “The Most Anticipated for 2008”; iPhone will be launched soon in UK in November this year. Runners up were Sony PSP Slim, Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft Xbox Elite and Nokia N95 Smartphone.

Michael Brook, Editor of T3 Magazine said at the Sun magazine article:

Apple really does appear to be an unstoppable force right now. The iPhone and the iPod Touch may have received some mixed press at times, but consumers are salivating over the products and the company is still unshakeable.

Brook said both the technology industry and the consumers voted for Apple, which shows the acceptance and the quality of the product. He said iPod is not just a true tech icon but also a huge factor in bringing the technology to the masses.

The night was presented by Friday Night Project funnyman Justin Lee Collins.

The iPod also won the “Best Commuter Gadget” the runners up are not bad either Archos 704 Wi-Fi, Blackberry Pearl, Nintendo DS Lite, Bose QC-3 and it won another award “Best Music Gadget”.

Apple iTunes won the “Best Download Service” with runners-up Emusic, Napster and Lovefilm.

Apple’s MacBook Pro laptop took the “Drop Dead Gorgeous” award. Blackberry Pearl won the “Most Addictive Gadget” award for its ubiquitous presence in the UK; soon iPhone will take over after its release.

You can see the whole list of awards here.

Do you consider Apple iPod as the all time best gadget? If not, what is the best gadget?

Ants Corral and Tranquilize Aphids Victims

Aphids. Image: Ncsu.edu

Ants act like cowboys in the wild, they corral aphids into their herds and get honey dew from them. The ants leave trails of chemical footprints to stun aphids from going elsewhere and clip their wings so they don’t fly away.
Tom Oliver from Imperial College of London is the team leader for this study encountered this behavior and saw ants controlling the aphids population at will. Scientists have know this pattern earlier that ants hang out near certain types of aphids colonies, but didn’t know why. The aphids produce sugar-rich, sticky honey dew when they munch on plants. Since the sugary substance is a staple of the ant diet, the ants use various methods to get this from aphids.

Earlier studies have shown that ants will bite off the wings of aphids to keep them from straying away and certain chemicals secreted by the glands of ants can sabotage the growth of the clipped wings. The new study showed ants leaving some chemical traces when they walk to their herds, this chemical tranquilizes the aphids and keeps them close by and the ants harvest the honeydew from them.

Researchers thus say aphids are like“honeydew on tap” for ants.

Ants and Aphids in an apple tree

The scientists used digital camera to discover the latest finding. They made the ants walk in a paper and after that they made the aphids walk over it. They found the aphids walked slower than normal. They found similar phenomenon in leaves when ants walk over them, the aphids walk slower in them as a result their travel patterns is curtailed.

The ants thus confine these aphids closer to their home. In some cases they are found eating some of the aphids themselves and keep the population in check. Even though ants are dominant in this relationship, the aphids also get some benefits out of this. Aphids are protected from ladybirds and other predators which are warded away by ants. Oliver thinks aphids also may deliberately walk into the chemical traces to keep them closer to the ants and stay away from their predators.

Oliver said in the end ants gain the most benefit from this symbiotic relationship.

The aphids are manipulated to their disadvantage: for aphids the ants are a dangerous liaison.”

The study report can be found in the October 10 issue of the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.

Now pregnant women are told: 'It is safe to drink daily glass of wine'

Till now doctors advised pregnant women not to drink during pregnancy, now a national health institute says pregnant women can drink up to 1.5 glasses of wine a day without harming their unborn baby.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in UK said that women can drink up to 1.5 units of alcohol a day without harming their unborn babies. While another Department of Health advised pregnant women not to drink at all. Both of these reports contradict each other and confuse the mothers-to-be.

NICE provides public health guidance to government. NICE advisers include a number of doctors and midwives, said other than increasing the risk of miscarriage, small amounts of alcohol did not harm the baby. But how a miscarriage is not considered bad is puzzling. They insist it is fine to drink up to 1.5 units a day of alcohol. Pregnant women however should avoid drinking during the first three months of pregnancy.

The unit for this drinking is measured as follows:

A small glass of wine counts as one unit, as does half a pint of ordinary strength lager, while a bottle of alcopop counts as 1.5 units.

NICE blames the Department of Health studies as unclear and not enough evidences are provided in it. Instead it wants the Department of Health to provide clear advice on this issue. The article doesn’t show whether NICE has done some trials or did any studies to validate their findings.

The spokesman for the Department of Health said its advice is straightforward and simple and said to the media:

Although there is scientific uncertainty about the precise impact of excess alcohol on unborn babies, we believed the time was right to introduce a strong, consistent and precautionary approach.

They just give a straight advice, avoid alcohol altogether during pregnancy and when planning to conceive.

Doctors hearing both reports say it is confusing to the pregnant women. Dr. David Williams, consultant obstetric physician at the Institute for Women’s Health at University College London Hospitals, said the Department of Health advice is “draconian”. He said he agrees with NICE with the data they have got and a total ban is not a good thing.

The problems with alcohol drinking during pregnancy is it cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) which has no cure and affects 100 babies a year, causes low birth weight, heart and kidney abnormalities, deafness and brain damage.

Besides this 7,000 babies a year are affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, which leads to attention deficit disorder, hyper activity and poor coordination.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that abstinence is the 'safest option'.

Even a layman can see alcohol goes to the bloodstream and the babies, why would anyone think drinking is safe during pregnancy? If it is safe they better show positive results and don’t say it won’t harm the baby but the only risk is miscarriage. Also, smoking during pregnancy is not a good idea as well.

Do you think drinking alcohol is safe during pregnancy? Do you know anyone that did this and yet had healthy babies? I don’t, most of my friends and in my family abstain it totally.

911 Math Call - Funny

911 calls are meant for emergency purposes, but some call for funny and strange reasons. Here is one of them.

But don’t make such calls unless you are a kid yourself, because it adds too much strain on emergency services.

Miss. America launches kid-safe internet browser

Miss America Lauren Nelson who during the contest vowed that she will do everything possible for children’s internet security today launched a kid safe internet browser free from spam, viruses etc., and can browse 10,318 sites pre-screened.
Lauren Nelson, seven years ago had a bad experience in the internet, when she and her friends visited a chat room during a sleepover. Soon after, an online predator started sending lurid photos. She said it was partly their mistake for sending private information to strangers, who then sent photos to them, but lucky for them no harm was done. Since, then she wanted to do something for children so they can browse the web in a safe environment.

The Miss America Kid-Safe Web Browser is to debut on Thursday and you can download it from here. The browser contains blocking mechanisms that will prevent phishing and intruder attacks. It also features an animated Lauren who guides kids with their online experience teaching them about Internet safety and asking random trivia questions. You can watch the demo of how the browser works here.

The animated character reads the e-mails out loud and can be programmed to have remainders for them to do their home work and other chores. The browser allows access only to 10,318 web sites, pre-screened by the Miss America Organization and the Children’s Educational Network, which provided the software for this browser. The browser has one main feature that will allow parents to lock the computer and prevent access to other web browsers. Parents can also add or edit to the approved sites here.

When kids try to access other sites not listed in the pre-approved sites, the animated Nelson warns them, "This Web site is not on the master list. Please ask Mom or Dad to add this site for you." When they exit the browser, Nelson says “Buh-Bye!”

I think it is a good start; I haven’t downloaded the browser to see how it works. From the demo, it looks ok, but it seems too commercial with Disney, Lego, and other major companies, so I don’t know how good that is. It may prevent predators, but I think it will make the kids spend more money. The Miss America kid browser has a premium option with more features, but the parents have to pay $4.99 a month. But if you just want to start fresh and want your kids to be in a safe environment, then this browser is healthy for them.

Internet 2 hits 100Gbps broadband speed, potential to increase 10 times more

Fermi has 100Gbps of bandwidth.

Scientists demonstrated a new version of Internet connections with broadband speeds operating at 100Gbps. It is currently operational in more than 200 universities across the USA and to some government and industrial facilities.
With a dedicated 10Gbps fiber optic link, it is conceivable now to send files at that speed from one corner of the country to another. With ten 10Gbps fiber optic links in each network, will create a total of 100Gbps bandwidth.

The current Internet cannot handle large video and data files and also speed is a big problem. With the service provided by Internet2, the speed of 100Gbps became a reality and the company speculates even higher speeds are possible.

This new main network is IP-based that follows Internet Protocols and connects more than 200 universities along with government and industrial facilities. The service will go operation in January 2008, but is already operational.

In a demonstration today for the public, Dr. Carl Lundstedt, University of Nebraska-Lincoln set up a connection between his school and the Fermilab research park in Batavia, Illinois (shown in the picture above). He then transferred one-third of a terabyte (1 million Megabytes = 1 Terabyte) of data between two places and it took 5 minutes. With existing internet connections it would have taken 92 hours (at 1 Megabyte per second data transfer).

Rick Summerhill, CTO for Internet2, says the speeds will be vital in the future and said:

Just like you switch on a light or turn on a water tap, we envision a future where researchers, scientists, faculty, artists, etc. will be able to 'turn on' a high capacity network connection when and where they need it".

University researchers requiring this high speed service at a cost can contact Internet2’s WaveCo Service. They can get speeds from 50Mbps to 10Gbps.
The only question is when we will get such high speeds at home. The current telecommunications companies, are not doing much to work on high speeds, since most are happy with the profits from current speeds, they are not spending enough for the future. The current speeds are terrible, nothing to be proud off, while other countries have higher broadband speeds.

Sweet Prayer Psalm 23 Recital by Three Year Old

I saw the above video after I read the Forbes article God Goes Online, where religions are having YouTube like sites to teach religious material. One of them is Godtube.com for Christianity and Muxlim for Muslim religion, both of them growing exponentially.

The video by three year old Abby, she recites Psalm like a pro. All I can say is Amen for a terrific job.

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,

he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he restores my soul.

He guides me in paths of righteousness

for his name's sake.

4 Even though I walk

through the valley of the shadow of death, [a]

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD

forever.

Besides the e-mails, Fuser also logs on to your various social network accounts and collects those individual messages as shown below.

Currently it is limited to two social networks, MySpace and Facebook, but others networks will be added in the future. You can check out personal messages, wall posts, comment posts for each account and reply as well from one account in Fuser.

Orgoo is another service that does the same, but allows only professional accounts of Hotmail and Yahoo.

I tried Fuser's service and it does a good job by aggregating various accounts. But it's slow like Webware.com.

I do think it's a good concept and hopefully Google and Yahoo will embrace this and make it convenient for us to use instead of logging into accounts separately.

GMail doesn’t allow other GMail accounts to be viewed in the same account, so if a user has a service like Fuser it is much easier.

Vodka drip saves poisoned Italian

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f6/More_Absolut_vodka.jpg/572px-More_Absolut_vodka.jpg

Australian doctors ran out of pure alcohol supply to use them as an anti-dote for a poison consumed by an Italian visitor, so instead they used an intravenous feed of vodka to keep the patient alive and it worked.

The 24 year old Italian man visiting Australia wanted to commit suicide, swallowed ethylene glycol, commonly found in antifreeze, which can cause death. But lucky for him, he was taken to hospital and administered pure alcohol, a conventional antidote. However, the doctors ran out of pure alcohol supply.

Desperate to save the Italian man, the doctors bought a case of vodka and started administering him by drip feeding about three standard drinks an hour for three days in the intensive care unit according to Dr. Todd Fraser.

Since the patient was in a medically induced coma, he was not affected much by this excess alcohol. The doctors explained the reasons for using vodka to hospital administrators who approved this vodka treatment.

The patient was treated two months ago, but the doctors released the news only now probably to maintain confidentiality. The man is doing well now.

Wonder the doctors fed some salt also with Vodka. Have you heard of any similar unconventional treatment that worked like this?

Methyl Iodide: The New Threat to Pregnant Women & Kids in California and Florida

Strawberries field use Methyl Iodide, a carcinogen may harm children, pregnant woman. Image: Treehugger

The EPA has approved the use of methyl iodide, a pesticide on strawberry fields. But scientists and Nobel laureates warn the substance is a neurotoxin and carcinogen that causes tumors and neurological damage when exposed to it.
The California Strawberry Commission is very keen to replace methyl bromide pesticide which has long been used to keep plants free of insects and diseases. However methyl bromide was found to damage the ozone and was subsequently banned.

The commission now wants to replace it with methyl iodide. But this substance is not a bullet-proof solution either, as scientists have said it is a carcinogen and neurotoxin that causes thyroid tumors, neurological damage and miscarriages in lab animals. The substance can also cause mutation of DNA in lab animals.

Chemists say this pesticide will pose a significant threat to pregnant women, their fetus, children, the elderly, farm workers and everybody that is near the vicinity. A total of 54 scientists (mostly chemists) have sent an open letter to EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson urging him to re-evaluate the organization's approval of Methyl Iodide as a pesticide.

EPA officials responded back and said there is nothing wrong with methyl iodide if it is kept in a buffer zone and applied carefully. Treehugger.com says it is easy for EPA officials to say this when they are far away from the fields, holed up in a city, and in not direct contact with this substance.

The problem with methyl iodide, chemists say, is after application it evaporates from the soil and exposes farm workers and neighborhoods nearby. They believe that once airborne, it could cause thyroid cancer and neurological damage just like direct exposure in lab experiments.

In addition, these chemicals must be applied by trained personnel and applied carefully by wearing respirators. Nobody should enter the field for five days after it is applied. In my opinion, it's doubtful the workers will be trained and follow necessary precautions.

Treehugger.com says the reason this pesticide was cleared by the EPA quickly (in less than a year) is because Elin Miller (the former chief executive of the product’s manufacturer, Arysta) is now the top official at the EPA. They spent eight years and more than $11 million collecting toxicological and environmental data to persuade the EPA to register methyl iodide as a pesticide. With her being the top official at the EPA, it got approved.

So, if you are getting strawberries from California and Florida, just be aware of this pesticide. It's OK to protect strawberries from disease, but if these chemists are correct, there are risks for farm workers, women and children who live in or around the fields in which they are grown.

In my opinion, these lobbyists and companies will do anything for money. And something tells me they won’t let their kids eat these strawberries.

Focus Your Attention On the Current Task, Hide All Distractions

Zorro makes your current window free from distractions and notifications

Every computer user does multiple tasks simultaneously with a number of windows in their computer screen. But if one wants to focus on any single window it becomes difficult with many interruptions, Zorro makes the window distraction free.
A typical computer screen will look something like below and usually we jump from one window to another. One window will be playing YouTube video, another one will be a chat window (in some case two, three chat windows are open simultaneously), Outlook window, Firefox, Internet Explorer. Thanks to the advanced RAM memory we are able to open several windows at the same time.

However if we have to focus on any one window, it becomes a burden with constant interruptions and notifications such as e-mail notifications, update indicators, messenger notifications, message alerts etc. Now there is a free software utility that will help you concentrate on just one window.

The utility is called Zorro; it blanks every part of the screen except the rectangular area selected by the user. This way you can just focus on the window.

Follow these steps to do this process:

1. Download this free utility, Zorro (works with all Windows operating system except Vista)
2. Install the Zorro and run the program.
3. A window overlaps on the screen, just drag the screen where you want to work.
4. Click the “Esc” button, the remaining portion of the screen becomes dark and free from interruptions.
5. Click the “Esc” button again to end the session.

Before – Multiple Windows, multiple distractions

After with Zorro utility – Single Window, no distractions.

This Zorro will also be helpful when you give presentations via your laptop and make the audience focus on the rectangular area.

Blue Sun - A rare phenomenon captured at the Pyramids in Egypt

PyramidCam which take live image of the pyramids every 30 seconds captured a rare occurrence, a blue sun phenomenon in Egypt. Scientists have a theory for the blue color appearance of the sun.
Only a few have recorded the rare occurrence of the blue sun so far, and one of them is the PyramidCam which was able to capture this golden moment. Thanks to it we can also see it here.
Craig Bohren has written about this blue sun phenomenon in his book ‘Clouds in a Glass of Beer’ in page 91, you can access the book in Google here.

Robert Wilson, an Astronomer in the Royal laboratory observed both the blue sun and the blue moon phenomenon in Edinburgh, Scotland. Based on his observations and other observations and some calculations, he was able to conclude the forest fires in Alberta which traveled across from the Atlantic to Europe caused this phenomenon. The oil droplets, formed in the combustion products of the fires, suspended in the air caused this color illusion in the sun. Oil particles have low vapor pressure; they are transported very easily by the winds.

Blue sun at the pyramids

Just like Robert Wilson, the observers in Egypt saw some fires between the sun and the pyramid, which rose high with the winds. They observed this fire smoke in many of the images they captured along with this blue sun image. Separately they have also captured long plumes of smoke visible behind the pyramids, particularly in winter when farmers burn stubble in the fields in the Delta and around Cairo.

Without these fires the sun would have appeared normal. For more images of the sun and the pyramids visit pyramidcam.com.

Will Gore get Nobel next week? Some think so

Al Gore, shown in a scene from his documentary 'An Inconvenient Truth'. Image: MSNBC

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and another Inuit global warming activist are likely to be awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize next week according to some insiders. The winner will get $1.5 million in prize money and will be announced Oct. 12 in Oslo.
If the predictions are right this will be the first time in Nobel Peace Prize history that an award will go to a person not connected to peacekeeping and but involved in environmental campaign.

About 181 nominees have been chosen for this Nobel Prize category and a winner will be chosen among them and awarded $1.5 million dollars.

Gore raised awareness through his book and Oscar winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”. Canadian Inuit activist Sheila Watt-Cloutier, who has done considerable work in raising awareness how Global warming affects the Arctic people. Both of them were nominated to share the prize by two Norwegian parliamentarians.

Stein Toennesson, director of Oslo's International Peace Research Institute and a long-time Nobel Peace Prize watcher, thinks both of them will be joint winners this year:

It will certainly be tempting to the (Nobel) committee to have two North Americans — one the activist that personifies the struggle against climate change, raising awareness, and the other who represents some of the victims of climate change."

Toennesson said by giving the award to those fighting climate changes, this topic will kick start the public debate ahead of a key U.N. climate conference in Bali, Indonesia, in December.

Other nominees like Rajendra Pachauri from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) thinks Gore will win ahead of them and he deserves it and has done a remarkable job of creating awareness on the subject.

Sheila Watt-Cloutier Watt-Cloutier told Reuters she was flattered to be mentioned as a Nobel Prize winner but doesn’t expect to win. But others think differently, she will be a joint winner.

Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, said the committee could establish the link between peace and the environment for this category.

I think the whole issue of climate change and the environment will come at some point and reflect in the prize…There are already climate wars unfolding ... And the worst area for that is the Sahel belt in Africa."

The shift of the Nobel Peace Prize from the conventional peacemaking and human rights work to environment was already seen in the past, when in 2004, Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai won for her campaign when she organized other women to plant trees across Africa. In the previous year, the prize went to Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank and helped millions of people out of poverty levels through a system of tiny loans.

Other possible candidates who may win the Nobel Peace Prize are the Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari for decades of peace mediation work especially in the Aceh region of Indonesia in 2005 and dissident Vietnamese monk Thich Quang Do for his pro-democracy efforts. Also in the nominees list are Russian human rights lawyer Lidia Yusupova who fought for victims of war in Chechnya and Rebiya Kadeer an advocate for China’s Uighur minority.

The nominations are not usually announced by the Nobel committee, who are very secretive about the whole selection process, but others make nominations go public with their candidates.

From this list it is obvious only a few have done real major work this year, Al Gore and Sheila Watt-Cloutier. But Al Gore is lucky he got more publicity than the scientists who did the bulk of the work with many reports and findings. It is just not one man's work. This year there have been not many peace situations worldwide; there were more wars than any real peace activity.

Does Al Gore deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? If not who should be the ideal winner?

Police recover stolen Da Vinci painting ‘Madonna with the Yarnwinder

Scotland Detectives recovered Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “Madonna with the Yarnwinder” that was stolen from a Scottish castle four years ago. Four men were arrested for stealing this painting worth $65 million dollars.
The painting “Madonna with the Yarnwinder” of da Vinci’s was stolen from Drumlanrig Castle in southern Scotland in August 2003, in a daring daytime robbery. Two thieves posing as tourists overpowered a guide before escaping with the painting in broad daylight.

The oil-on-wood painting, which shows the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus on her lap holding a cross-shaped spindle for yarn, is one of several versions of the same scene painted between 1500 and 1510.

The painting appeared on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list of stolen art and on the Art Loss Register’s list of stolen masterpieces.

The police officers found this painting in Glasgow, Scotland. Three men from England and one man from Scotland were arrested according to the Scotland’s Dumfries and Galloway police.

The art experts were able to authenticate this painting as Leonardo da Vinci’s. The condition of the painting was not stated in the article.

The lead investigator, Detective Chief Inspector Mickey Dalgleish, said they were able to locate the painting with the help of the public and cooperation from the national crime agencies.

Drumlanrig Castle houses one of the finest private art collections in Britain, also contains masterpieces by Rembrandt and Holbein. The structure was completed in 1691, is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Scotland and is home to one of Scotland’s richest landowners, the Duke of Buccleuch. The painting had been in the Buccleuch family for more than 200 years. The ninth Duke of Buccleuch died a month ago, he would have been happier with the news of this recovery.

Some scholars have suggested the painting maybe the work of Leonardo’s assistants, but Scotland experts think otherwise who say the central figures of the Madonna and child are the artist’s own work and the overall design must be his also.

I hope the Buccleuchs’ will take better care of it now, if not they should give it to the Public Museum. Too bad the precious arts of legends should remain in private hands instead of being in a museum so anyone can enjoy the arts and be inspired as well.

Daisy the dog finds the meal of her dreams... a mammoth bone

Daisy the Dog finds the mammoth bone in the beach. Image Ref: Daily Mail, UK

Daisy, a miniature wire-haired dachshund, discovered a bone along the beach, which turned out to be a mammoth’s. The bone weighed eight pounds and it belonged to a mammoth which lived more than two million years ago in England.
Daisy the dog according to the owner likes to pick up a stick or a dead fish along the shores of the Dunwich beach near Southwold, Suffolk, England. One day she got more than she bargained far, a massive bone, which should couldn’t pick it up alone. So, she waited for her master, who took the bone out for her and was astonished to find it belonged to a Southern Elephant, a type of mammoth that once roamed England two million years ago.

The bone was 13 inches in length and weighed eight pounds. The Southern Elephant was a massive creature of the past which grew up to 14 feet in height and weighed about 16 tons. That is one of the reasons the bone weighed heavy to support the heavy Southern Elephant.

The owner Dennis Smith, a 69 year old retired turf salesman from Witham, Essex, was happy that his dog found this exciting discovery. He knew right away that it was a mammoth’s bone, and later it was confirmed to be a Southern Elephant or archidiskodon meriodonalis by a local geology group.

Bob Markham, Chairman of the geology group said the mammoth had lived between 1.75 million to two million years ago during the Pliocene or Pleistocene era.

He said the remains of mammoth is quiet common in this area, but he is glad that it was discovered by the little dog. He said if the bone had been of recent origin it might have made a good meal for the dog, but since it is too old, all its nutrition might have been replaced with iron oxide element.

It must have been disappointing for the dog to lose such a big meal, hope the owner or the geology group gives her a big steak with lots of bones.

Yahoo Upgrades Spam Filters to Completely Block “eBay” Frauds

Yahoo Mail will be upgrading its e-mail service to help block spam e-mails from those posing as eBay and Paypal. With the new technology, nicknamed “DomainKeys,” Yahoo will be able to verify the domain of the sender of the emails, which allows for ISPs to block those that are fraudulent.

The changes in the system are expected to be seen globally over the next few weeks. Hopefully this will cut down a considerable amount of spam email from phishing sites that steal users’ information for financial and other personal identification purposes. This could also greatly help deter those that heavily use email spam messaging to scam users with fake checks, as we’ve seen that this in particular is becoming very widespread across the world. Surely other email services will continue to tighten their spam filters as well.

So, there won't be unnecessary e-mails in your e-mail box and it will also help protect against fraudulent e-mails and sending private information by accident.

Parents kick out teen girl for being bisexual, Girl commits suicide (Video)

A 14 year old girl confides her bisexual secret to her parents, but they kick her out of the house instead. In despair, girl leaves the class, gets a gun and shoots herself to death.

Taylor Jo Doherty, 14, had apparently bisexual feelings and was ridiculed by her classmates for being bisexual. When she tried to confide to her parents about her bisexuality, they disowned her and kicked her out of the home. More information is available here but the site is not working right now or the article has been removed. I could only find this video shown here about Taylor Jo Doherty.

After she was kicked out of her home, she apparently went to get a gun right away and shot herself to death. Whatever the reason, it is hard on a young girl or boy when your own parents disown you at the time of trouble. The school is bullying you and ridiculing you and then to top it off your parents disown you. I think it might have been too much for poor Taylor.

How she was able to get a gun that easily is also a question needs to be answered. It is a tragic story; I hope the parents who read her story should show better judgment than kick their own children out.

The video shows 14 year old Taylor Jo Doherty. She is a pretty girl, too bad her life was cut short. There are plenty of friends in her video, she could have either talked to them or they could have given her support. But when in crisis one normally sees fewer friends at their side, so it might have led to her suicide.

Nobel Prize panel regrets not honoring Mahatma Gandhi

The image “http://www.digitaljournal.com/images/photo/gandhi_1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Mahatma Gandhi

The Nobel Foundation regrets that it didn’t give a peace prize to Mahatma Gandhi, who was nominated five times for the Nobel Peace prize but the Norwegian Nobel committee rejected him every nomination.
India celebrated Mahatma Gandhi’s 138th birth anniversary on October 2nd.

Michael Sohlam, Executive Director of the Nobel Foundation in Sweden told CNN-IBN today that they regretted for not giving the Nobel Peace Prize for Mahatma Gandhi. They gave the award to two of his most prominent followers, Martin Luther King and Africa’s Nelson Mandela, in the later years, who considered Gandhi as their inspiration to lead their respective civil rights movements.

Sohlam said to CNN-IBN not giving the Nobel Prize to Gandhi was a mistake:

“We missed a great laureate and that’s Gandhi. It is a big regret.”

Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times — in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and, only days before he was assassinated, in 1948.

The reasons Nobel foundation rejected Gandhi was because he was considered neither a politician nor a humanitarian relief worker. The Nobel Foundation wanted to give a posthumous award in 1948 but decided against it and didn’t award the Nobel Peace prize for that year. Probably they didn’t want to create additional controversies of not including leaders from other countries.

Some think one of the prime reasons for not giving the award to Gandhi may be the racial factor, at that time Nobel didn’t give any awards outside Europe and the US, but Nobel foundation disputes that. Nobel critics however say that Gandhi when he started his non-violence campaign helped only the Indians not the blacks and also his campaign was all not non-violence some of them lead to violence against the British occupiers.

The followers of Gandhi who received the Nobel Peace Prize awards are Albert Luthuli in 1960, Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1964, Mother Teresa in 1979, the Dalai Lama in 1989 and Nelson Mandela in 1993.

Sohlam said the Nobel committee thinks that Gandhi is the one person that is missing in this Nobel Peace category.

Nobel Museum curator Dr Anders Barany said in to CNN-IBN:

Gandhi is the one we miss the most at the museum. I think that’s a big empty space where we should have had Gandhi.”

I think Gandhi should be definitely added to the Nobel Peace Prize, because many followed his teachings and ideologies and they have Nobel Peace Prize but not Gandhi. I only wish the current leaders would follow the non-violence movement to wage wars, it will save lives and money for the nations involved.

Noble Foundation should add another category for the legends of the past, like a hall of fame, it will be a source of inspiration for many.

Should Gandhi be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously?

Conscientious people are less prone to Alzheimer’s

Healthy Patient's brain vs Alzheimer's Patient's brain. Image Ref: http://www.alzinfo.org

People who are conscientious, self-disciplined and scrupulous are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease in their later years according to the US researchers. They studied nearly 1,000 Catholic nuns, priests and brothers for the last 13 years.
Robert Wilson of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and his colleagues did this study by analyzing the health data of 1,000 Catholic nuns, priests and brothers since 1994. The study appeared in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

They defined conscientiousness in the study as people who control their impulses and are goal directed. Those who exhibit this behavior are considered dependable. They ranked the volunteers on a five point scale based on their answers to 12 questions. An example of one of these questions was, “I am a productive person who always gets the job done”. The five point scale had scores ranging from 0 to 48 with the average being 34. Based on the cumulative score a person was considered conscientious or not conscientious.

Besides these tests, they were given various medical and neurological exams, including cognitive testing. None of the volunteers chosen had any Alzheimer’s at the beginning of the tests.

All the above tests were done each year as a follow up through 2006. A total of 176 people developed Alzheimer’s disease during this study period.

People who were highly conscientious — those in the 90th percentile with scores of 40 or higher, had an 89 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who ranked in the 10th percentile, with a score of 28 or lower.

The researchers also found that there was a correlation between conscientiousness and slower rate of cognitive decline and also a correlation between conscientiousness and a lower risk of mild cognitive impairment. Both cognitive decline and cognitive impairment poses a high risk for Alzheimer’s.

The researchers are not sure why conscientious people are less prone to Alzheimer’s. Wilson and his colleagues suggested it may be because conscientious people tend to be more resilient.

It is interesting study but I think it maybe true, in Yoga they always talk about mind and body connection, if the mind is healthy, the body is healthy and vice versa. I read a few books, Light on Life: The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom and Perfect Health: The Complete Mind/Body Guide by Deepak Chopra, they talk about this connection.

You can get both these books at the library also.

Do you believe this theory that conscientious people are less prone to Alzheimer’s?

World's Biggest Fake Fish Tank in China

China has built a large LED screen in a shopping district in Beijing surrounded by malls. It displays various images and animations like a desktop. The viewing LED screen is 7,500 square meters built at a cost of $32 million dollars.

A 250m by 30m LED screen has been installed in the ceiling in one of the shopping districts in Beijing. It seems to be a form of advertising screen but it displays images of nature, films, videos games and animation. Mostly the screen displays animation of fishes swimming in a large fish tank. It appears realistic with this giant LED screen, which cost them about $32 million dollars to build it. The video shows the LED screen in action, in the night it appears dazzling.

The LED screen hangs about 80 feet in the air and is five screens combined together to form one giant screen. That's an impressive 7,500 square meters of viewable area, and comes with an impressive $32 million price tag to match. It hangs 80 feet in the air, and is actually five screens combined. Check out a video after the jump. LED Screen

LED’s Screens connected together.

Screen at night.

The article says it was built inside the mall, but it appears to be in the middle of the street with buildings surrounded.

If it is for just decorative purposes, the screen is a waste. They could have got better decorations with various methods, even planting trees and flower plants will make them good.

10 Reasons To Eat More Chocolate

From Laurel on health foods Blog.

You might think chocolate is sinful, but it’s a lot better for you than you think. In fact, it has been used for hundreds of years by medical professionals to cure ailments such as tuberculosis, gout, fatigue, diarrhea, weak digestion, hemorrhoids, low virility, and shortness of breath.

Recent nutritional research has identified many health benefits of chocolate. After reviewing these studies, I came up with the following ten reasons why you need to consume more chocolate.

1. Reduces high blood pressure - flavonoids in cocoa (procyanids) help balance blood pressure and reduce blood clotting. Researchers from Germany’s University Hospital of Cologne found that cocoa consumption lowered blood pressure by an average of 4.7/2.8 mm Hg. The New York Times reported that dark chocolate is almost as effective at lowering blood pressure as common antihypertensive drugs.

2. Improves blood flow to brain - a University of Nottingham professor found that drinking cocoa drinks rich in flavanols improves blood flow to key areas of the brain for two to three hours. Flavanols in the cocoa drink are a key ingredient of dark chocolate. Professor Macdonald’s study also suggested that cocoa flavanols in chocolate may enhance brain function to help fight sleep deprivation, fatigue, and the effects of ageing.

3. Boosts mood - MSNBC reported that caffeine and other chemicals in dark chocolate can improve your mood and ease premenstrual symptoms. Mark’s Daily Apple wrote that the chemical phenylethylamine in chcolate has been found to trigger feelings similar to “falling in love.”

4. Prevents cell damage and 5. Improves blood sugar levels - Lisa C. Cohn, R.D., President of the Park Avenue Nutrition Spa in NYC, wrote that flavonoids in pure dark chocolate are responsible for these added benefits. Cohn said, “if you’re going to indulge on Feb. 14 or any other day, go for the purest dark chocolate you can find. That’s the kind loaded with flavonoids…”

6. Reduces risk of heart attack - a researcher from the John Hopkins University School of Medicine said that eating a few squares of dark chocolate every day may reduce your risk of dying from a heart attack by almost 50%. The study found that blood platelets clotted slower in people who eat chocolate.

7. Helps ease chronic fatigue syndrome - a study found that adults with chronic fatigue syndrome who eat 1.5 ounces of 85% cocoa dark chocolate were less fatigued after they eat chocolate.

8. Raises HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol - a Penn State study found that diets high in cocoa powder and dark chocolate (with high flavonoid content) are related to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels when compared with diets low in flavonoids such as tea, wine, coffee, and onions.

9. Improves processing of blood sugar - an Italian study found that dark chocolate consumption increased the body’s metabolism of blood sugar and may reduce the risk of diabetes.

10. Eases a persistent cough - a UK study found that theobromine, a component in cocoa, may be more effective as a cough medicine than standard drug treatments. The research showed that “theobromine acts on the sensory nerve endings of the vagus nerve, which runs through the airways in the lungs to the brain.”

Many chocolates can be high in calories, sugar, and saturated fat. To maximize the health benefits of chocolate, avoid eating processed chocolate products that have refined sugar and milk fat.

Instead, choose the purest dark chocolate you can find - the more raw and unprocessed, the higher the flavonoid content. The best dark chocolate to eat has at least 60% cocoa solids.

iRobot® Looj™ Gutter Cleaning Robots

iRobot introduces Looj Gutter cleaning robots, a Roomba like device to clean gutters faster and easily. It is so fast it cleans a 60 foot section of gutter in just 10 minutes.

For homeowners, this is great news to find a cheap and fast way to clean the gutters all around the home. The Looj Gutter cleaning robots reduces ladder work, standing or reaching too much, less climbing and repositioning the ladders. Get the faster, easier way to clean gutters. The video shows the demonstration of this Looj robot.

Gutters need to be cleaned regularly to avoid water damage, overspills and ice dams. Dirty gutters also become a breeding ground for carpenter ants, mosquitoes and other pests. With the Looj, cleaning gutters becomes a piece of cake.

It has the following main features:

• Avoid climbing and repositioning the ladder multiple times
• Works with standard K-style, aluminum, copper, metal or vinyl gutters
• Avoid over reaching into gutters from dangerous heights
• Cleans a 60-foot section of gutter in just 10 minutes
• Can be cleaned easily after the job is done by rinsing with water.
• Occupies less storage space.
• It is portable can be carried along with other work tools.

Looj moves in both forward and backward directions and the 3 stage auger spins in both directions to give an efficient cleaning action. It can be wirelessly controlled via a handle/remote and makes the gutter cleaning job easy.

The 3 stage auger spins at a high speed 500 RPM to break up heavy and solid particles with its special blade design. It is able to break apart clogs with its hard plastic disruptors and the natural rubber ejectors lifts out debris from inside the gutters. You can also control the speed of the auger with the remote.

This will make a great gift for your family and friends. The prices start from $99, you can purchase it here.

Scientists Invent 30 Year Continuous Power Laptop Battery

Betavoltaic Battery

U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory is sponsoring a research project in which a laptop battery will be able to last for 30 years without a single recharge. The battery uses a special type of nuclear technology that is safe to use.
This ingenious betavoltaic power cells are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source.

As the radioactive material decays it emits beta particles that transform into electric power capable of fueling an electrical device like a laptop for years.

The betavoltaic batteries may use radioisotopes but they neither use nuclear fission or fusion processes or any chemical processes to produce energy, so they do not produce any hazardous waste in the process.

The Process uses beta electron emissions that occur when a neutron decays into a proton which causes a forward bias in the semiconductor. This makes the betavoltaic cell a forward bias diode of sorts, similar in some respects to a photovoltaic (solar) cell.

Electrons radiate out of their normal orbits in the semiconductor and hits into the circuit between the two interfaces and create an electric current.

Relative size comparison of batteries and mobile

Compared to the regular batteries, the sizes of these batteries are quiet small and thin. A porous silicon material is used to collect the hydrogen isotope tritium in the process. The reaction is also non-thermal, so the laptops and mobile phones won’t get too hot and will be much cooler than regular lithium batteries. The reason the battery lasts so long is that neutron beta-decay into protons is the world's most concentrated source of electricity, truly demonstrating Einstein’s theory E=MC2.

When all the power of the batteries is consumed, it is easy to dispose off because it is not toxic in nature. According to the article, the batteries will be in the shops in the next few years. For more information on Betavoltaics click here.

If what they say is true, it will revolutionize the electronics industry, it is important to see how much energy is consumed in the real process to convert them into electrons. According to the article, the battery will be released in the next few years. One of the main sources of income for the electronics manufacturers is the replacement battery sales, so wonder what they will think about this technology.

Automatic Tagging for Your Blogs

I have been using Google Blogger for some time, it is a good one, but changes are slow and far between. One thing I would like in Blogger is Tags feature, there are some programs that could do Tag Cloud feature but there is one called Jiglu that does an excelled tag feature for your blogs.

Once you register free at Jiglu.com, Jiglu plugs into your blog and automatically creates intelligent tags and links for your web content at one place. It is like a widget like stuff you can easily embed at the top of your blogs, so your readers can read your most popular blogs and links. It is very easy to do, it just took me a few steps to get the Jiglu Widget and start tagging the blogs right away.

Get Jiglu Thinking about your blogs, it works on the background like a bot and does all the legwork for you creating tags and links for your blogs. It is an excellent and must have tool for every blogger.

Adobe Share: Your Documents Are Now Embeddable On Any Site

Adobe is entering Web Office environment with their new beta service called Share. Like the name suggests, you can share any document with either restricted audience or open to all.

Adobe acquired Buzzword today, an online word processor program. To this Adobe adds Share a flash based program to share your desktop files (Word, PDF, image files) with either your selected contacts or with the general public. It converts the word or PDF file to a flash file, and it provides embed codes (like YouTube), so you can share it with anyone.

With Adobe Share, you can store up to 1GB memory for your documents. Currently only PDF and image files are available for sharing, later it will add Word, and Open office file formats. It is free anyone can join here.

Adobe Share is built with Flash and Flex, Adobe's primary tools for constructing cross-platform webapps. To use it, you’ll need the latest version of Flash Player (which means it may be a little flaky under Linux) and an Adobe ID.

It will be helpful for collaborative purposes and want to share important files to a number of people who can see it online anytime. Adobe director of product marketing Erik Larson said files such as MP3, movies will not be allowed here and this Share service is meant only for sharing purposes not storage.

An example is given above; double click to watch it at Adobe Share. It would have been better if they have zoom feature in the embed site, hopefully Adobe will add it in the future.

It is in beta stage, so the interface and sharing aspects are not smooth, but I am sure it will be worked out. It is another free tool available in the Internet, you can use to communicate with a wider audience.
